DRESSMAKING AT HOME.
DRESSMAKING AT HOME. rlT SYLVIA. AN OVERALL SKIRT. Now that women are everywhere working on the land, and more and more will be re- quired to solve the feed problem upon which 60 much depends, useful ideas in the way of equipment are more than ever welcome. The pattern, therefore, which I have selected for the first of this week's sketches, should be assured of wide popularity, as it is thoroughly practical and useful, and should appeal not only to the Ifind-worker but to the housewife and business girl. Pattern No. 3,187. This skirt is intended to be slipped on like an apron, with the fastening in front instead of the back, and will be found useful by the land worker as well as the business girl. About 2yds. of double width goods are required. The skirt, as the sketch shows, has Of fish- wife" pockets at the upper-part of front, either two or four being arranged, according to needs, the division, which is accomplished by means of stitching, being a very easy matter. Materials, &c. Drill, or stout washing material of any suit- able colour, should be selected for this skirt, which is intended for a washing affair. The business girl, however, will find it well to copy the French fashion in such matters, and make hers of black sateen or very dark mate- rial, not only to save laundry expenses, but in view of ink and other spotting. To Cat Out. The "fishwife" pockets can be arranged in I two, or even three, ways, so the pattern is a very accommodating one. Thus, you can stitch on the piece, which re- presents these, or you can cut the pockets all in one with the upper part, hem and finish them off, bag-wise, and then join the lower part of skirt to them; whilst the third method is to cut the top-parts of the skirt, down as far as the stitching, and the lower part long enough to include pockets and hem, which is then arranged over the corresponding upper part, and firmly stitched at the lower edge, after this has been turned in to face it on the wrong side. Any one of these methods is quite satisfac- tory, and I have referred to them at length in order to make the pattern useful. It consists of three pieces only, that is, half of front and back (the skirt being a three- piece affair) and the pocket piece. (The belt being a straight strip is m^Snven.) 1!1 You can, therefore, cut the skirt in any of the ways I have mentioned above, and like- wise according to taste and your cloth. If cut "fish-wife" fashion you must add this pocket-piece to the w^w-part, to have this all in one, whilst if according to No. 3 method, z;' you add its length to the lower part. When placing, arrange the fronts to the selvedges and the centre-back to the fold. To Kake Up. First finish off the pockets as preferred, then turn in and stitch the front hems, make buttonholes as far as lower edges of pockets, and sew on buttons; next join fronts to backs, neaten and press seams, then turn up and stitch hem of lower edge. Lastly, make belt of the right size, round off ends, arrange the skirt between the turned-in edges, stitch round, and fini&h off with button and buttonhole.. A "LINGERIE" SET. Though the combined undergarment is now universally worn by women, there are yet a great ;n:iy who, like Frenchwomen, prefer the two undergarments, particularly for summer wear..Now, as longelotli, calico, and ail kinds of cotton underwear fabrics, like everything else, are increasing rapidly in price, and may by next year be almost un- procurable, I counsel my readers to add to their block of undcrw ear. As this is cheaper made at home, unless one can afford to pay a high price, I have added a set of tin(! er,,ar!)ient,; consisting of chemise and knicks-to this week's list, which can be obiaiiied in various measurements. The chemise, as you see, is of the homely, old-fashioned order, which still finds much favour, particularly with those who are somewhat advanced in years, whilst the same remark may also refer to the knicks, which f ppttprn No. 2,188. This set is intended especially for those of generous proportions, and is very useful just now. About 4yds. of 36-inch material will make the two garments. i are cut with plain fronts, and the La-k- fastening so many pedple prefer. It also makes the pattern eyeful for cutting the "over-knickers," which are so necessary an item of the woman worker's outfit, Materials and Making. As I have mentioned the most usual and suitable materials above, I need not refer again to these, but will confine my attention to the cutting out and making up. So far as the former is concerned, fold the length for the chemise in half widthways, place the centre front and back to fold. and cut out. allowing the necessary turnings for I

¡WAR PENSIONS COMMITTEE.
¡ WAR PENSIONS COMMITTEE. Mr A. Beckwith presided at a meeting of the Breconshire War Pensions Committee held at Brecon on Friday afternoon. ADDITIONAL MEMBERS. On the question of the nomination of two representatives of discharged soldiers and one widow of a soldier for appointment on the coni mittee by the County Council, the Chairman suggested the advisability of nominating two men connected respectively with the Federation of Discharged Sailors and Soldiers and the Coin rades of the Great War. and Mr W. Morgan urged that nominations should be confined men who had been on active service. Eventually Messrs Joseph Treharne. of Ystradgynlais. and- Albert Hitchins, of Brynmawr, were nominated; Mrs R. D. Garnons IVilliams. Llwyncyntefiw, was nominated as the representatives of widows. Replying to an application from the com- jnittee for the establishment of a full Employ.. ment Exchange at Brecon, the Divisional Officer of the Ministry of Labour wrote statMg that the Department were considering the granting of Employment Exchange powers to the local agent. Mr Knight. APPRENTICES AND THEIR FAMILIES A number of resolutions for increasing the powers of local pensions committees in dealing with grants of pensions and allowances wero supported. Amongst them was one from Dar wen, asking that in regard to apprentices whose time expired when with the colours, the restriction on the grant of additional allowances to parents and dependants, confining them to cases of hardship or necessity, should be re- moved, so that committees would be at liberty to make grants on the basis of what the soldier or sailor would be earning if out of his time, irrespective of the circumstances of the family. Another from Bootle asked for the removal of the condition in the case of apprentices killed limiting pensions to parents wholly or partially incapable of self support through infirmity cv old age. 11 YSTRADGYNLAIS APPOINTMENT. RHEUMATISM
RHEUMATISM KIDNEY TROUBLE Rheumatism is due to uric acid crystals in the joints and muscles, the result of excessive uric acid, which is also the cause of backache, lumbago, sciatica, gout, urinary trouble, stone, gravel, and dropsy. Estora Tablets, a thoroughly harmless specific based on modern medicinal science, are the successful treatment, and have cured numberless obstinate cases after the failure of all other tried remedies, which accounts for their superseding out-of-date medicines sold a; a price beyond all but the wealthy. Women frequently suffer from ills, aches and pains, under the impression that they are victims of ailments common to their sex, but more often than not it is due to the kidneys and in such cases Estora Tablets will set them right Estora Tablets—an honest remedy at an honest price-Is 3d per box of 40 tablets, or six. for 6s 9d.
