----? ULTRY KEEPING.
? ULTRY KEEPING. A PROFITABLE HOBBY. BY "UTi LlTY." J MILK FOR YOUNG BIRDS. the country districts, where there is a jlflWuI supply of milk during the summer, foods can be economised -^bv giving the YOUl. birds plenty of this instead of water. ThJ fjSe of milk has a most favourable effect a their growth and on the< lessening of mor- tality among the young .bird's. For those who live in towns it may be of interest to know that sour milk is apparently (from the result of recent experiments) of equal value to sweet milk in its relation to growth and mortality, and different degrees of sourness do not alter the results of milk feeding. This does not mean, of course, that the vessels in which the milk is placed need not be cleaned out regularly, or that milk which has been* standing in the sun should be drunk by the chickens. It means that milk which has turned sour in the larder may be given a little at a time to the chicks. Milk which has become contaminated with dust or the birds' drqmpings should be cleared away and the vessel scalded out. If milk can be supplied freely the birds should be given plenty of exercise, though if the birds are being fattened this, of course, is not necessary. Milk- is of great value when young birds are being fattened for the table. Not only does it improve the flavour, but gives Lh-C a whiter and often a more finely- grained appearance. HOUSIXGTHE DUCKS. Many readers this year seem to be keeping ducks, and there is still a great demand for them. One reader writes to ask how to house them, so I am writing on this subject this week, for my own experience has been that many people seem to think it unnecessary to provide any proper accommodation for their ducjts, though they go to great trouble for their fowls. It is true they are one of the easiest kinds of bird to house, but some form of good housing is necessary for two reasons. One reason is that the birds must have a dry floor, covered with dry straw, peat moss litter, dry leaves, or bracken, or else they will get cramp in their legs. The ether reason is; that if ducks ape not shut up till nine or ten in the- morning, they are apt to lav away, and may even drop their eggs in their swim- ming water. If not confined, ducks will gener- ally sleep floating the water, or else just beside it; but this, though nakiral, neither conduces to early nor to prolific laying. In fact, many breeds of dusks are far better layers if they rtre kept away from swimming •water altogether, being given just a tub snnk in the ground or a small pool with gravel at the bottom, where they can dabble about. The form of house does not laucli matter; even a large barrel or one of the large boxes in which -matches are—or were—sent from Sweden are quite suitable. But whatever the cf house provided for them, it should afford proper ventilation and, at the same time, be weatherproof. The roof need ftot be move than 3ft. from th? ground, to- ducks do rot porch like hens. But it should be con- structed so tfia- everv pirt of it may he kept clean. A house ef thh height, and measuring about 4ft. by 3ft., will be quite large enough, for a drr.fco and four ducks. The nests for the (Tucks are best arranged on the floor and containing straw. To To make the floor more comfortable for the dheks a?, a sleeping place, it should be made I « ] HOUSE VOR DUCKS. r j to felope a little from back to the front.
