It goes without saying that economy must often be a ruling factor in choosing children's clothes, the Queen says; and warmth for the first three months of the year be the greatest- consideration. For these two reasons stockinette or tricot cannot be too strongly recommended. Tricot is the material par excellence for all appertaining to children's wear—little frocks, coats, jumpers, or what not may all be made from this well-wearing stuff. As accessories linen collars are once more to the fore. These are all quite plain, with 116 trimming of lace or any flimsy material; sometimes they are pointed like a little Puritan maid's, at others they resemble the sailor collar that is always popular with a frock of serge or stockinette. A TAILORED COSTUME. The illustration annexed depicts a typical example of a severely plain tailor costume—in blue velours cloth with velvet collar and cuffs. The elegance of the costume is attained by the severity of the cut and the perfect fit. The shape of the collar and cuffs is new; but a specially I PATTERN NO. 2,362. smart feature is the way the pockets are arranged—two on the breast and two on the hips. The costume is accompanied by the waistcoat blouse that buttons high on the throat; and the serviceable toque with outstanding wings seems to be the only possible millinery to accompany such a severely elegant coat and skirt. FASHION AND CO-ORDINATION. Fashion has been very clever, during these years of warfare, contending with every sort of difficulty and coming out with elegance and prettiness in spite of them all. A PRETTY JUMPER. The original jumper in the design below was made of tomato-coloured crepe-de- chine, with tucks on the shoulders, waist, and wrists; while skunk fur adds a rich finish at hem and cuffs. The waist is finished in an original way, the sash passing through a deep slot in the front. -+-H- A BUTTONHOLE HINT. Nothing is more aggravating to the busy mother when making children's clothes than sewing buttonholes on serge or other material that frays very much. Here is a way that will make a good firm buttonhole in a few minutes with the mini- mum of trouble and temper. First inter- line the part where the buttonholes are to be with some canvas or strong linenette, then put the whole side to be buttonholed in the sewing-machine, and etitch up and down closely together several times. Then cut out the buttonholes and sew them in the usual way, and there will be no trouble at all with unravelling threads

CONTEMPORARY CHAT. WHY THE AIR RAIDS CEASED. I am told that Mr. Kellaway's mysteri- ous hint that the enemy air raids in Lon- don came to an end when disaster threa- tened any such operation owing to our possession of a new and deadly weapon of defence was fully justified, writes Club- man in the Pall Mall Gazette. The air defences of the country were becoming stronger almost daily when war ceased, but the highest expectations were centred on a terrible gas shell, which would have filled the air and enclosed hostile machines rithin a ring of gas through which no man could have passed and lived. Had another attack been delivered, the upper strata of London air would have been fatal to the enemy. There would have been no shadow of danger to the population in its use. JAPAN'S REPRESENTATIVE. Baron Makino, who is taking part in the Peace Conference, is one of the cleverest and most honoured Japanese statesmen, and has filled many important posts in Japan and abroad. He is a member of the Privy Council, which, in Japan, is a most powerful body, and also a member of the Diplomatic Advisory Board, which, though recently established, has become very influential. GERMANY'S ENGLISH PAPER. The notorious Continental Times, which has been maintained by the German Government throughout the war, is still appearing in Berlin as an independent cosmopolitan newspaper published in the interests of truth," with its abiding' en- thusiasm for India and Ireland, its news of the business and financial world," and all its other attractions. But the British subject, Aubrey Stanhope, has either abandoned his task or changed his name without changing his initials, eays the Times, for recent issues announce the name of the responsible editor as "Alex. Subkis." LUXEMBURG. The promotion of Princess Charlotte of Luxemburg to the dignity of Grand Duchess in place of her deposed sister will probably prove to be only a provisional arrangement, tiding the country over the time which must elapse before the ar- rangements of 1867 can be revised, says the Westminster Gazette. As regards the ulti- mate destiny of the country there are several currents of opinion. Luxemburgers with business interests in Belgium favour union with* Belgium; those with business interests in L, rance favour union with the French Republic. The opinion of the mass of the inhabitants of the country has yet to be ascertained. GERMANY MUST PAY. The one outstanding matter in con- nection with the peace settlement upon which the public are unanimous, declares the Globe, is their determination that Ger- many shall pay the whole cost of the war. The more the situation is realised by the people the more determined are they that we in this country should not be mulcted in heavy annual payments as a result of Germany's crimes. COMMERCIAL OPINION. The members of the London Chamber of Commerce have no illusions on the point of the ability of Germany to pay, and have put forward some practical suggestions to that end, whilst the Association of Chambers of Commerce have formulated six pom is iui' lJ'c;<;1; icnus, wnich are ex- cellent. We are pleased to see they have notified the Prime Minister of their opiiv ion, which will certainly strengthen his hands for his formidable task. The opinion of the Associated Chambers is un- doubtedly the opinion of the country. SAILING SHIP'S FINE RECORD. Lying in the London Dock to discharge flour, her tall spars rising over the build- ings, is the Gla-gow iron full-rigged ship Kirkcudbrightshire, the first wind-jammer to come into the Thames since the re- striction debarring sailers from the danger zone was removed. In-charge of a well- known shipmaster (Captain D. Roberts), the Glasgow ship has in the past made a name for herself by her fast passages. Her latest performance is quite a not- able one. for in than nine months she has mailed from New York to Australia, thence b?.ck to New York, and thence across the western ocean to the United Kingdom. She is known to have logged at times over 300 miles in a day. PROFESSOR GEPDES. Professor Patrick Geddes is presen y to retire from the Chair of Botany at Dun- dee '"University College, a position he has held for thirty years. A native of Perth, he served in his early as an assistant in Professor Huxley's laboratory at South Kensington, and successively he was demonstrator of physiology at University College, London, of zoology at Aberdeen University, of botany at Edinburgh., and lecturer on natural history at the School of Medicine, Edinburgh. AN ENTHUSIASTIC TOWN-PLANNER. As a scientist, Professor Geddes has widespread fame; but to the general public, he is known chiefly, szjs the Westminster Gazette, on account of his enthusiasm for town planning and Civics. He went to India for the replanning of'Delhi, and the war long delayed his return to this country. At Chelsea there are students' hostels which lis orirpna^d, and his Edin- burgh hostels for "+"ri',nt, nvft accepted as models of what such residences should be and, in conjunction with Professor Arthur Thomson, he wrote a book cn the evolution of sex. TERRIERS IN INDIA. I hope that Sir. Churchill and Sir Douglas Haig, in arranging the new scheme of demobilisation, have not for- gotten the Territorial divisions in India, writes "Diarist" in the Westminster | Gazette. They went out early in the war, and the fact that 520,000 invalids are to- be brought back from India and other parts of the Empire shows what a heavy strain on their health the long stay in unhealthy climates has imposed. And yet there seems little chance of any but the invalids btuig brought home before another hot Why should not a call for volun- teer^ be made to take their places? It mighc be necessary to pay these volun- teers at a higher rate, but the extra cost should not st in the way of' doing justice to the Territorials who have borne the burden and heat of tropical eliimates since the beginning of the war.

HINTS FOR THE HOIfL J BY A PRACTICAL HOUSEWIFE. | SCRATCHES OÑ FURNITURE. | One of the most almoying thing.: that happen in the house where there are chil- dren and polished furniture is huge un. j sightly .scratches made by a nail or the wheels of a toy being dragged remorse- lessly across it. But even they can be eradicated with a little trouble. Mix a spoonful of turpentine with a similar j quantity of linseed oil. Take a small brush—a soft paint brush is the best—and dip it in the mixture. Pass it quickly over the scratch, and in half a minute it will disappear. Wipe off the mixture of oil, and rub with a soft cloth for a few minutes. The following day rub the scratches well with furniture polish, re- peating this every other day for a time, when there will be not the tiniest trace of the scratches remaining. USES FOR OLD OILCLOTH. Even the very olde-st pieces of oilcloth or linoleum or cork carpet can be used for some good purpose. When it is being fitted into another joom after a move, or when new is being laid down, collect all the odd pieces cut off. Pieces in good condition can be cut into squares with slightly rounded' corners for standing on the floor in the kitchen to save the new linoleum when a black saucepan or kettle is suddenly dumped down on-it. In the bathroom, too, other mats of this kind may be placed, for men have a happy knack of.putting a jug with boiling water in it on any piece of furniture, no matter if it is polished. Odd-shaped pieces will do instead of a knife-board. Dust a little knife-powder on them and rub the knives. HOW TO WATERPROOF. In the winter weather, the question how to keep the wet out of boots and clothes is a worrying one to the housewife, especi- ally with boys and girls going to school. It is possible, though, to waterproof clothes at home, to make them quite im- pervious to the heaviest rain for at least a year, when the process can be repeated. Dissolve two ounces of powdered alum and four ounces of sugar of lead in one and a-half gallons of water, and mix thoroughly with a wooden stick. Allow the mixture to stand for twenty-four hours till all the sediment has settled, though it may need one or two stirrings during that time. Pour oil the clear liquid into a large tub or bath, when it is ready for immersing the clothes. Put in the article, and soak it well, squeezing it thoroughly' so that the garment is well saturated. Hang it some- where to drip (on no account should it be wrung out), and allow it to dry gradually in a warm place, though not too near a fire. When quite dry it will need to be well brushed and ironed, and will then resist any amount of rain. A USE FOR OLD COMBINATIONS. Children's combinations usually wear first down the legs, and after much mend- ing it becomes impossible to mend any longer. Instead of using the garments for rubbers, cut off the legs just above the worn parts, turn up a small hem, herring- bone this, and you have nice warm under- bodices that are splendid for the winter weather as an extra protection. If they have worn along the neck at the shoulders it is useless to darn. First cut a strip of flannel on the cross and bind the neck with this, then darn over the worn parts. This will strengthen them and make them last very mucii iOi*ger. j.* t..e} «•-<• buttonholes, take off all th.e buttons, stitch on a piece of calico, and also stitch another similar piece u r the button- holes. Put the buttons on again, and cut buttonholes through the calico, sewing these right through to give extra strength. STEWED LENTILS. Fresh vegetables are scarce at times. This means that dried vegetables may have to be used occasionally-, and one of the nicest and most nourishing is lentils. But lentils can be very nice or very otherwise according to the manner in which they are cooked. First wash the lentils well in warm water and take out any that swim to the surface. Then put the lentils to soak for a little while in cold water, or, better still, vegetable or meat stock. Add a piece of dripping or margarine, a sliced chopped onion, or grated crvrrot or grated celery, and put on to hcd. Salt and pepper should be added lafe-r on, and the liquid must be renewed as it boils away. When once they have come to the boil the sauce- pan should be moved to the side of the fire so that the vegetables may simmer. When they arc soft, strain and stir in a teaspoonful of some meat extract, or if preferred, tomato or other sauce. Mash well, and serve in a hot dish. HOW TO CANDY FRUIT PEEL. Here is a method of candying peel of oranges or lemons at home, and if done carefully it should be just as satisfactory as that bought from a shop, though it must be kept in air-tight tins in a dry place or the sugar will liquefy and eventually the peel will go mouldy. When peeling an orange it should be cut off" in quarters, and these are then wiped thoroughly clean. Place the peel in water and allow it to soak for three or four days until soft. Pour off the water and allow an equal quantity of sugar. Boil the peel in the syrup till quite soft though not broken. Take out the peel and turn white side up on a soup plate or deep dish. Boil the liquor until it become-s very thick and syrupy, then pour over the peel. When the oven is cooling in the evening the peel can be put in with the door just open, so that the syrup may candy, but of course the oven must be really cool or the syrup will melt and become thin again. When quite candied pack away in a tin. IMPROVING. BOUGHT JAM. Some of the bought jams one gets nowa- days that have a good deal of marrow in them are often tasteless and insipid, and as very often the shops only have one kind of jam for weeks on end, it means either this particular jam or nothing at all! But the flavour of such jams may be greatly improved by turning out the 21b. into a basin and squeezing over it the juice of a lemon. Thoroughly stir this in, and put the jam back in the pot, tying it tightly down if it is not wanted for a time. The juice of an orange can be' used instead, and if the jam is to be eaten at once, the juice from tinned fruit can be mixed in With j am. 1
