SPECIAL MEETING.—A special meeting of the Council will be held on Tuesday evening for the purpose of olecting an alderman in the place of the late Alderman William Thomas, J.P., C.C., and aim to declare six seats in the Council vacant, and to instruct the Town Clerk to take the necessary stcpff to hold an election to fill the vacancies. TEMPERANCE.—The local branch of the Mont- gomeryshire Temperance Association opened itiv fourth winter campaign with a united meeting CD Sunday evening last, at China-atreet chapel, when the chair was occupied by the Rev John Griffith* (Baptist), and addresses were delivered by the :sn. Mr Jones, Ynysybwl, Glamorganshire, and Richarcl Hughes, B.A., Aberystwith. It is intended to holdC united prayer meetings every alternate Sunday. The officers elected for the ensuing year are:—President, Rev Maurice Griffiths, M.A.; secretary, Mr Thomas Rogers treasurer, Mr David Rees. DEBATING SOCIETY OPENING SESSION.—'TII* opening session of this Society was held at Beihel- street Schoolroom on Friday evening last, when there was a very large attendance of members and the public. The debate for the evening was, "Should the House of Lords be abolished or not?" The affirmative was taken by Mr Willie Mills, and tho negative by Mr John Morgan. The discussion on both aides was hot and strong, the final division showing by a large majority that it should be abol- ished. WESLXYAN METHODISTS YOUNG PEOPLES* SUNDAY.—The annual meetings having direat bow- ing with young people, held in connection with Weslcynn Methodism, took place at Llanidloes as Sunday last. At. 9 o'clock a prayer meeting WM held, after which an able sermon was preached by Rev A. C. Pearce, from Genesis, 28th chap., 10-22 verses. In the afternoon a service for the young" was held, conducted by Mr Pearce, when addresses, were delivered alternative with singing and prayer* The meeting cocitinuod for two hours and a quartezv and the chapel was literally packed. In the evening the pulpit was ably occupied by Mr H. A. Parry, ot Newtown. ENTERT.LINM]tNT.-The scholars of the National Schools, Lianidloes, gave a most enjoyable enter- tainment in the National Schools on Tuesdiay even- ing, when the schoolroom was orowded to ezoeeaw The programmo was a long and varied one, and the efforts of the scholars were much appreaiated by the large audience, who were unstinted in their applause. After the programme had been gone through the Vicir (Rev E. O. Jones) distributed the prizes to those who had made the highest number of marks io their respective standards. The Vicar, after distri- buting the prizes, made a brief speech, in which he earnestly requested the parents to send their chil- dren regularly to school. He was desirous of raising; the standard of the school, and he hoped that the prizes given would give a greater impetus too the children to take a greater interest in their studies. He was glad to see that the old mother tongue was being taught in the National Schools, and he hoped that it would never die out, amongst the children of Lianidloes. A special word of puite is due to the headmaster, Mr Cope, for the efficient way in which he has trained the children. SUDDEN DEATH. He had not felt well be- fore leaving home, and early in the aftemo<n he de- cided to return as he was suffering from acute pain m his lower law. He came by train to Dolwen, and was accompanied home by some friends, and mediesl aid summoned at once. Dr. Vaughan Owen attended him, and he got somewhat better. The pain, however, worked from the jaw down to his chest, and whilst partaking of a little nourishment on Wednesday evening, he, without any warning, fell back and ex. pired. Death was caused by heart disease. Deceased leaves a widow and a large family of small children, with whom much sympathy is felt throughout the town and country, where the deceaeed itae well known.
