The Assise for this county commenced yester- clay-,Ir-ci will be;iti next week at Beaumaris for the county of Anglesey. Whatever of interest nniy occur will be flllly laid before our readers, as also for the county of Merioneth, which has just terminated. We are given to understand that the Assize Balls, for this county Et,i(i the county rif Anglese, will be m->st fashionably attended; ■ In erecting new buildings in this-city, the Stones are promisculdusiy thrown on 1 he footpaths in very:dangerous heaps; there is a bouSe now erecting fronting- the main street, where the stones occupy at least, forty yards in extent along the pathway, and are three feet into the main road. VVe trust-the exertions of the proper authorities will be excited to remedy this great nuisance. We believe a person is paid an aunual salary for inspecting'the weights and measures, tiirbuo-h- out this city. We are not aware that any insnec- tion has taken place within the last, twoySars — at this time it would be a great benefit' to the poorer classes if a standard could be adopted for weighing the bread sold in the different shops Arrived at Beaumaris, the Idas, Ramsderi from Manhilachi with yellow Pine, Lath wood and Planks for Mr. Harris, jun. The Lord Bishop (if Saligbtiry laid the foun- dation-stone of d new church to be built at the Ferry Side, near Carmarthen, last week; in the presence of a vast concourse of people assembled to witness the ceremony. His Lordship contri- buted the sum of 200.. The Steam Navigation Compatly has advertis- ed a dividend; few of the new Companies ap- peal likely to follow the example. The tread mills, we understand, are to lie tit- tered to hand crank-mills, as recommended By the late Sir J, C. Hippesley. Dr. Good, and others. The Duke of Northumberland, prior to his quitting France, was presented by the King with a valuablo snuff-box, richly set in diamonds; and ornamented with a fine likeness of his Majesty. Sir Thomas Brisbane's catalogue of stars in the southern hemisphere is making such rapid pro- gress, that about this time 12,000 observations are aboutJo be sent home finished, and 6000 more more are nearly ready. The ground on which the notorious dust heap stood, at the end of Grays-Inn-lane, sold for Xlb 000. It is to be built upon. The dust and cinders upon it are transferred to the Thames, thence to be shipped for Moscow, to aid in the rebuilding of that celebrated city! Five pounds is now the amount of Excise Licence to-an Auctioneer, instead of 12s. as hi- therto. The alteration is in pursuance of an Act passed oh the 27th of June, and which was to take effect 60 the 5th of July. This is exclusive of X3. 4s. for the bond making the sum of IS. 4s. which is required to he paid yearly by any person acting as an Auctioneer. A foot-race, for a wager of five sovereigns took j place in the Long Walk, on Saturday; between a man of the name of Bruff, fifty-five years of age, and Edwards a shoemaker, a celebrated runner, who agreed to give Brutf fifty yards in a hundred on his carrying a man ten stone weight on his back. Bruff being an active old veteran, accepted the challenge, and carrying his man of ten stone, won the race by one yard and a hair.-The above Bruff has a celebrated dog, between a bull and mastiff, which is said to be one of the six dogs which fought Nero, the lion at Warwick. A vast deal of .church properly has been sold this season. The low rate of interest will account for ihe hiRh. prices it now produces, as compered with former years. Add to this the difficulty of with former years. Add to this the difficulty of finding-employment for the younger branches of a family in the navy and army, and a satisfactory' reason for increased value in church property will be apparent. The advowson and next presenta- tion to the living of Ewhurst. in Sussex, worth dflOOO a year, and the next presentation and ad- Vowson to the living of Liskeard, in Cornwall, worth < £ 700. a year, are announced for public competition on the 9th inst. The new Distillery Bill enacts that any person buying spirits, or employing others So to do, ex- cept, from licenced dealers, incurs a penalty of £5DO. Aiiy, dealer removing spirits exceeding one gallon without a permit, or receiving into stockwithottta permit, to forfeit £ 200. for every offence. Every person possessed of more than SO gallons of spidtsto be deemed a dealer, and subject to the survey of the Excise. Either of the offending parties informing against the other to be acquitted of his own penalty, and allowed to give evidence in any trial at law. The liquor of the oyster contains incredible multitudes af small embryo oysters, covered with little Shells perfectly transparent, swimming nim- bly about. One hundred and twenty of these in a row would extend one inch. Besides these young oysters, the liquor contains a great variety of animalcules, five hundred times less in size, which emit a phosphoric light. The list of inha- bitants however, does not conclude here, for be- sides these last mentioned there are three distinct species of Worms (called the Oyster-worm)t half an inch long, found in oysters, which shine in the dark like glow-worms.. On the 25th of July, Messrs. Gilchrist, Coupon and Marshall, officers of excise at Sprinfield and Annan, seized near Newcastleton, a hearse and two horses, the vehicle, instead of a dead body, having within it a living spirit, in the shape of thirty gallons of prime Scotch whiskey with which the cunning driver was merrily trotting towards England, though bedizened in sables. On the same day, white the ofncers were conveying the hearse to its new destination, they also seized a horse- And aii thirty gallons, of whiskey in ten casks; The man who belonged to this lat- ter venture cadie boldly up to inquire %vho, the deceased was; end where he was to be buried; and found tashis surprise that an old acquaintance ha.dbee d:,H'711N1 whiistbathing, anil the peo- ple bringing-thehearse from Newcastleton to con- vey him to The place of interment, thinking the opportunity an excellent one for outwitting the officers, concealed the whiskey within it! The driver of the hearse is in Annan gaol, and the man belonging to the horse is in Carlisle gaol. EXPEDITION EXTIUORDINAHY.—Various feats have within the last few years been performed by pigeons, and among the latest was that of one of the Flemish breed, turned loose after the fight for the bhampionship, at Warwick, by Henry England, of the Green Man Iiin, Kent-road which perfot-tned the ninety-two miles in three hours and;thirty-ifve minutes. This was exceed- ed oi) Monday a Mr. Attwbod, having made a bet of 100 sovereigns, first that he wouid let six pigeons loose on the high ground near Crostwick (between Norwich and North Wal^ham) 111 miles and that one should arrive at his loft, in the Sanc- tury, St. George's-flelds, within four hours and a half, and the bird was at the end of his flight in 12 minutes within the given time. The other part of the match was X50-1 that the second bird would not be at home in five hours. The second bird reached liii destination within five hours. The others were not heard of during the day.— This beats the Antwerp flying hollow. SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. FELL.(From the Liverpool Comrei-).-Ainong the various vicissi- tudes of human life which we have had to record, the sudden death of William Walter Fell, Esq. who but a few days ago was elected to the lucra- tive situation of stipendiary Magistrate at Man- chester, is one of the most afflictive. Mr. Fell t 0 had availed himself of the interim between his election abd assuming the duties of his office to arrange ^Gitie business, for vliich the Sessions at Kirkdaie, near Liverpool, afforded an eligible opportunity and on his return from thence, on Monday afternoon, to Liverpool, he stopped at the Crown-Inn, Redcross-street. Having there taken his place to go by the New Times Coach to Preston, on the next morning at five, he dres- sed andwènt out to meet some friends. He re- turned to the Irirt between il and 12, apparently in excellent-health and spirits, and, after giving- directions to be called soon after four in the morning, to be ready for the coach, he retired to his bedroom. At four o'Clock the porter knocked at the room-door, and receiving no answer, again knocked in a louder manner. The knocking, however, riot being attended to, he re- tired to enquire whether any other person had been placed in the same room. Finding that there was not, he returned, opened the door, and found the unfortunate gentleman lying, undressed, upon his back upon the floor and insensible. The porter called his master, and immediately procur- ed a surgeon, who found that he was dead. From the impression,on the bed and pillow, it appear- ed that Mr. Fell had lain in it for some time, and that probably upon being seized with indis- position, he had got up to call for assistance.— A special inquest was Convened yesterday, be- fore the.coroner, William Molyneux Esq. attend- ed by Mr. Sititham and upon the evidence of the medicat gentlemen, the verdict of the jury was that he died in a fit of appoplexy. Mr. Fell was in the prime of life (we believe about 46), had attained considerable eminence in his profefsion as a barrister, and was deservedly much esteemed by the gentlemen of the profession and a large circle of friends. The poignant grief of his ariii- able wife and family will be more easily ima- gined than it can be described from the dreadful disappointment they would suffer, as they ex- pected him at Preston on Tuesday, for the flrsi lime lifter his new appointment; Tuesday the steam-vessel, called the Enter- 1 prize, left the banks of the Thames for those of the Ganges." Her burden is 500 tons. She has two sixty-horse power engines. The boilers, which are made of copper, extend across the ship, \Vith' seven feet in de'pt'i. Although the Enter- prize will make use Of sails, when the wind permits, she 'will rely principally oh her steam, and for this purpose she must necessarily take out no less than three hundred tons of coats, The coals are partly contained in ch&mbers, within the sides of the vessel, covered with sheet iron. and partly in tanks beneath; which, as they are emptied of coals, will be filled with walev to keep the vessel properly ballasted. The cabins, of which there are twenty, are furnished with ievery convenience. ■■
