DANGEROUS DRIVING BY MOTORISTS. "300 MILES AN HOUR!" These sessions were held on Monday. Mr Kneeshaw (chairman) presided, and the other justices present were: Dr. R. Arthur Prichard, Dr. Dal ton, Mr Robert Roberts, Mr Adey Wells, Mr T. W. Gi-I ffiul, Mr John Dowell, with the Clerk (Mr James Porter). MOTOR CYCLIST FiNJ||). A motor mechanic named Richard George Houchin, of Taliesin^stneet, Llandudno, pLeaded not guilty to driving' a motor cycle to tho danger of the public on the 27th ult. r.c. Dewis (74) described how, at about 2.40 p.m. on the day in question, the defend- ant drove a motor cycle reckLessly iiiong the Llandudno parade, from the Gloddaeth-strcet direction, his ra-te being about 25 miles an hour; and how children and an aged scavenger had to "stampede out of his way." When b;9 was stopped the only excuse the defendant made was that had there been anyone in danger he would have pulled up. Cross-examined by Mr Hallmark (for the defence), Witness positively denied telling the defendant subsequently that there would be only a small fine imposed in his case. By "recklessly" he meant that the defendant did net take the necessary precautions having re- gard for the congested traffic at the time. The horn used was a loud one, but defendant did not give pedestrians sufficient time to get out of his way when he blew it. De- ieiLidaiit nearly ran over a scavenger bry. By Deputy Chief Constable Rees: Four miles an hour would have been quite sufficient speed on that day in view of the great amount of traffic on the road. J. Owen, foreman scavenger, gave corro- borative evidence, and in answer to the De- puty Chief Constable, said there were more people about on the day in question than he had ever seen. The Defendant said he had been employed as a motor mechanic for six years, during wihich peivlod he had habitually ridden oiotor cycles, having driven them through the crowded streets of London and Birmingham, but never before had a complaint been made against him. He had been repairing a spring on the cyeLe in question, and was testing it before the machine was returned to the owner. He did not think he was travelling at more than 14 or 16 miles an hour, and he acknowledged that there were a large number of people about, but he de- nied than a.nyone had been in danger. The Deputy Chief Constable: You .knew there was a spcod limit of ten miles an hour on that road? Witness: Yes. In reply to the Bench, the Deputy Chief Constable said the defendant had made a promise not to fight the case otherwise the police would have called six other witnesses against him. After Mr Hallmark had addressed tihe court for the defence, The Chairman said the Bench considered th-a case a serious on.e, but, after taking into consideration wha't had been said for the defendant by his advocate, and the fact that that was his first offence, they had decided to fine him only Yl and costs, including the ex- pen&ee of one witness. "300 MILES AN HOUR!" Frederick Hamilton Smith., who said he was an ao-tickd cV-rk in the office of a Man- chester firm of solicitors, was summoned for driving hit-, motor car to the common danger through Gloddaeth-street, Llandudno, on July 19th. Mr J. J. Marks (for the police) explained that Gloddaeth-otreet was the main street running through the northern end of the town, between the Conway Shore and the Llandudno Shore, and during the mornings in summer it was usually thronged with people making for either shore. On the morning in question a police officer on duty in -Olifton-road saw a car coming down Glodd.i»sth-street at an excessive ,spQed—a spaed estimated by the policeman to be 40 miles an hour, and by another witness, 30 milks an hour- and as there was a good num-ber of peopl-e about, gome children ■having to ran out of the car's way, the defendant was stopped. He was asked if the knew at what rate he was going and whether ho had ssen the childre-n who had ■been obliged to run out of his way. Defend- arm scjiid he saw ro children on the road, whereupon the officer remarked; "If you look round you now you can see tkein for you r- acJf. F. Lester, another witness would corroborate tlM officer's view a-s to the danger oauvicd by the defendant's car. P.C. Hugh WTilliams (26) g-ave evidence substantially bearing out tho advocate's STATEMENT. In answer to Mr R. S. Chamberlain (Messrs Chamberlain and Johnson, Llandudno), who was for the defence, he said the car was coming- towards him at the time, but he did not think .it was difficult to judge the speed of a car under such circumstances. It took the car two or thxee seconds to cover tho distance from the shelter to the top of the road—about 400 y ards. Mr Chamberlain That is about 70 or .80 miles an hour. You do not seriously mean that (laughter)?—Wre!l, I sh-oiild tlillnk it took him about that time. WoeI" t-here many people in the road?—Yes. How many?—I should say about 50 aJI along the road from where I saw the car coming. Did anybody complain to you about him? -Yes; people canic- to me and said he should be airrested, but they could not come to court to-day, becausc they were going to the Continent next inorliug. F. Lester, carriage proprietor, Clifton-road, who gave corroborative evidence, said the defendant was "going for all he was worth," but he would not tie himself down to figures. Mr Chamberlain: If the car could so 80 mil.e8 an houir you say it was going 80?—Yes (laughter). The Just witness said the car was going —according to the figures I have now worked out—at about 300 miles an hour (laughter). Are you right or the last wit- ness?—I am not giving you any mileage, but whalt I say is that he was going for all ho was worth (laughter). If the car could not go more than 20 miles an hour you say it went at 20 miles an hour? —-Yes, but if it could go 300 miles an hour I say it did go 300 miles an hour (loud laughter). Mr Chamberlain, in addressing the court, said the defendant was thoroughly acquainted "with Llandudno roads and the habits of the people there, because he had liv«;d at the. Chad-et on the Marine Drive, near Gogarth, for two years, and had motorod over Glodd- aeth-strec't numberless times. He had held a licenee for seven years, but on no previous occasion had a complaint been lodged against him. He submitted that the evidence as to speed given to the court was absolutely un- reliable, whilst nothing had been proved to the effect that anyone had been endangered by the oar. He also reminded the Bench that Gloddaeth-street Tj^as one of the widest thoroughfares in the county. The Defendant said it was absolutely im- possible for a person to judge the sptid of a car, which was approaching him, unless he IKKI a distance marked out, and the car timed properly. It was absiud to say he was gong at even 35 miles an hour; h<* might have been travelling at the regulation pace of 20 miles an hour, but no more. If 6 11 u a on pace of 20 miles an hour, but no more. If the officer had asked him at the tim« what speed the was travelling at he could have told lum, because his speedometer indicated thai he was not going over 20 miles an hour. There were only three people in the road apart from the- footpath, and he S3im<4.:>4 his horn two o.r three times be- fore approaching some children, who ran into a shelter. He could not have driven at a very big pace, because he would not havl been able to take the awkward cornei-s the car had to negotiate. His brother and uncle (who was new in Belgium) were with him at the time, and they oouid bear out his evidence. By Mr Marks: Sis was a simple speedo- meter, which fell to aaro when the car stopped. Hubert Constantino Smith, brother of the defendant, gave ovid-^aoe in corroborat><n. The Chairman said the Bench considered the case proved, and they had cLocukd to deal with it in the same way as the previoflj one. Defendant was, therefore, fined £ and costs, including an advocate's fee of .£1 11 and the cxpenaes of one witness. IlOREE CRUELTY CASE. William Owen and Thomas Owen, at Pleasant-street, Craigydon, Llandudno, wes* fined 5s each and costs respectively ÍŒ'v;crk; ing and causing a hoise to be woikcd in all unlit state on August 1st. Inspector Fleming, of the R.S.P.C.A., said he saw the horse referred to in MostyB" street, and as it was walking very lame h4 stopped and examined it. It was sulTeri»& from considerable pain in one of the limbs, and he ordered the driver to tktf it home. Two hours later, however, he aga11* found it on the road at work. When h* called the attention of the owner to the animal he acknowledged that it was laBiet Tho horse was absolutely unlit for work. For the defence it was urged that the iijul was only stiff, and that no pain as suffered* Ho is lame on on-e leg remarked the OW midst laughter, but if he w-er-e iaico on th4 two iit would be alright. DRUNKENNESS. Robert Hughes, of Baron Hill, Orme's Head, was fined 2s 6d and costs drunkenness. AS GOOD A BLOW AS POSSIBLE. Catherine Jones, a married woman 1-iviBa in Jubilee-street, Llandudno, summos^* Anne Davies, a well-built though appaxenW a considerably older woman, living m War* house-street, for assault. Examined by Mr Marks (for the etlitplaillo ant), Catherine said there had been so difference between the dauglitei-s of parties, as a result of which Ann struck (witness') daughter, Hannah. Witness tf" monstrated with her about this, aud sU sequently, while witness was in a neighbor ing shop, the defendant struck her two lent blows, one causing a cut over the e)' and the other discolouring her jaw. Cross-examined by Mr R. S. Chamber- (for the defence): She did not accuse defendant of being drunk what she g that the defendant must have been mad t drunk before she oould have struck bed daughter as she had done. Her husba did not threaten to strike the defendant ded he use bad language. He would net v that, said witness, because he is a ch.a.pe.; man. By Mr Marks: He goes to the Bapt Chapel here. Mr Chamberlain: You don't suggest Marks, that they are any befctei' than people. I don't find they are (laughter)* Mr Marks: They are certainly no at any rate, for going to chapel or chur0^ Mrs Fenton, Josiah Jones, and P-C. gave additional evidence for the oamplaI ant. I'h.e Defendant, speaking on her own half, acknowledged striking the Cl()Tli twice, but "not before she sa.id I was drulk- Mr Chamberlan Did you give hcu a y.eft; severe blow? Defendant: Well, I gave her as much I oould, sir (laughter). A fine of 2s 6a and oosts was inflicted. NEWSPAPER BOYS BETTER BEllA-V At a children's court three news pa.P^. boys appeared, who had been remanded a previous court in order to give theia chance to stop their practice of cry: rig 110 papers in the streets.. £ The Deputy Chief Constable reported they had carried out their undertaking well, and on the understanding that continued to be equally well behaved in > future he suggested that the eases them be withdrawn. -iu Mr J. J. Marks (for the boys) said he ingly gave aJi undertaking to that e.'& He agreed that there should not be eX noise by the boys, and he had spoken to and to the local managers of the ne about it. Mr R. Roberts (one of the mag" lot suggested that the boys should to cry out continuously, as that a iw of annoyance to visitors. iio P^0. failed to see why they should have to that sort of thing from oae trade more th# another. The Deputy Chief Constable: If 'it lS r peated I shall bring them before your ships.
