CHRISTMAS IN THE CHURCHES. Owning to Chriatniias falling on Sunday, no special services were held in the local churches, but carols were sung in the evening, the con- gregiatioeis being unusually large. In St. Tho- mas' Church the ar;;thems "Christmas Awake" and "Blessed bo th3 Ic-rd" were rendered. At the Parish Church two carols, specially com- posed by the Rev. NEWMARKET. TEST CONCERT.— On Saturday evemdng a test OO11œort. in connection with the Congrega- tional Chapel was held in the Memorial Hall. The chair was occupied by Mr W. Conwy Bell, J.P., RhuxMan. Danks, was the cantata performed at a children's service for the Christmas festival of St. Paul's Weslcyan Church, Abergele, on Sunday after-' -noon, and was very numerously attended. The service was preceded by the singing of "Trwy ddirgel ffyrdd" and a prayer. The St. Paul's Juvenile Choir, conducted by Mr Wm. In. the Parish Church the order of the Chrristma3 services was as follows:—At 8.0 a.m. was a celebration of the Holy Com- munion in Welsh. At 10.30 the morning prayer was intoned by the Rector, the special psalms being aurag to chants by Lemon, Jones and Barnbv, and the kyrie to a beautiful setting by Porter. An appropriate Christmas sermon was preached, and there followed a second celebration of the lledy Communion. At 6 p.m. there was choral evensong1, with carols aaid sermon. The proper psalms were sung to ch-ants by Nates amd Lawes, and live Wei-h carols bv Pen-fro were very well ren- dered by the choir. Suitable bymnis were also sung, and the Rev. Jenkyn Jones gave an in- spiring sarmon on the appeal of Christmas. Mr R. H. Jones presided at the organ. The Church had been beautifully decora led by Mis6 Mcrg-an, Mrs Roberts, Misses Hill, Mr A- E. Evans and Miss Edwards. At 8 a.m. on Christmas Day there was a ooral celebration of the Holy Communion sut Sit Ma.ry's Church, the Rev. Jenkyn Jones being the celebrant. At 11 o'cicck the service was intoned, and the special psalms and the Atliaaasian Greed were to special music appropriate for the day. CHRISTMASTIDE AT RHYL ROYAL ALEXANDRA HOSPITAL, RHYL. ENTERTAINING THE PATIENTS Many thanks are due to those who have so generously responded to the lady superintendent's appeal lor help towards the hospital Christmas •festivities. A great number of gifts were sent and in consequence the patients were given an excellent Christmas fare, as well as an appro- priate prevent. The chapel and wards were very prettily decorated with holly and flowers, sent by friends. A great attraction in the Gertrude Ffoulkes Ward was the boautiful Christmas tree, supplied by Mrs Rowley Conwy, which was bril- liantly lit with electric light. The huge snow- ball, given last year by Miss Blakeney, and re- novated and filled with presents for the boys, formcxf the central ornament in the Duke Ward. At a very early hour in the morning each child was awake, and happily investigating the contents of a Christma-s stocking, for which Mrs Lloyd (the Vicarage), Mr Dixon, and others kindly sent toys, sweets and orarig-:«. and Miss Cast-on threepenny pieces. About nine o'clock Mr War- ]jut, _t, with li;s i,6-ual kindness, bi-otight tit?e full choir from St. Thomas' Church, who sang an anthem and caro's, walking in procession from ward to ward. A short service in the wards was followed by the Christmas dinner, which was most heartily appreciated. Mrs Tayleur as usual sang de- lightfully. Amongst the many other friends who devoted the afternoon to amusing the patients, Mrs Storey, Dr. and M.'se Eyton Lloyd, Mr and Mrs Hugh Jones, Mrs J. Foulkes, and the Rev. Donald Macaulay. In the evening Arch- deacon Lloyd conducted a short service in tha Hospital Chapel, and gave an appropriate ad. dress, the younger patients singing very pretty carols. It should also be mentioned that before break- ing up for the Christmas holidays the pupils at BSencathra School brought a large selection of toys, which they distributed themselves among the patients. On Friday afternoon Mrs Storey gave a suit- able present to every ward patient, and Mr Perks, as in former years, personally gave everyone 111 the hospital a new sixpence and a kindly greet- ing. A very nice Christmas tree, laden with pretty ornaments and crackers, as well as a number of toys, was supplied for the Duke Ward by Mrs Strutt and her children. It was lighted on Tuesday evening to the great delight of the younger paticftis. Through the thoughtful kind- ness of Mr Storey and Mr Stanley all the patients visited by the district nurse were made happy by Christmas fare and many little oom- foite. PROVISION FOR THE POOR. The traffic this year, both on the railway and in the POb-t Office has been cxoeedirsgly heavy, and the returns show a marked improvement on thoi-e of last year. The-re was very little delay ir> dealing with the heavy .mails and parcels, and at the railway station the time-tables were well adhered' to. The bookings by the early train on Chirist.mas rnorming for Crewe and other English towns was above the average, and showed that the J hop assistants and others fully appreciate the facilities the railway company afford at holiday tirue. The poor were well oared, for duos year, and Mr W. J. P. Storey's generosity agtain provided many with food and fire. The tickets distribu- ted for hot pots, bread, 00al and' groceries ex- ceeded) the ruurnber of previous years, and so well provided were the bakehouses wiotŒ1 hot- pots that when ail comers were satisfied: several roriiiaamed over. The hot-pots were niada in the Corn Exchange con, Saiturday by Miss Williams (late of the Alexandra Hotel, who was assisted by a number cf helpers.
