ways treated juvenile competitors with sympathy." But at the same time an adjudicator was bound to be honest. As regards the M-enai Cho'r, the quality of the tone produced was very beauti iui, although it was a small choir, and contained many young voices. Another feature of the singing was the attack and release of notes, which was most ant staeiory. The contrakoes wore weak and that seemed to be the fault of all the choirs. The intonation in parts was rather sharp, but the expression was good. The tone of the Rhyl Choir was a little more mellow thun that of the first choir. There were oldei- c)j??]d?en in the Rhvl Choir azid their vo'ccls N,ver,, nioic maturc?d. ihe chief fault was tliat th.i? f Irst s,3pranic-.s woi,c too pi-oiniiient, wi-iich greatly interiercd with the balance of the choir. ,?o o,? not, ll'ho attacit and ?ell, ts wa's good, the a, expression satisfactory, and the intonation good. He regretted that in the selection of the unaccom- panied piece the Rhyl Choir did not choose a more difficult p ece. He believed the choir had the ability to have undertaken a more difficult work, and they would have fchown more clever- ness had they done so. They d.d not do justice to themselves by taking a simple piece. The Gionant Choir was a little harsh in parts, particularly in the loud t portions, but in the soft parts they were very good. The tone was nice and satisfactory. The dhir was well balanced and moved well together. The attack and finish were excellent, and the intonation very satisfac- tory. Ihcir style and conception of the piece were also good. As to the unaccompanied piece the choir had selected a much more difficult oom- petition, and more marks were scored on that account. They had sung as only W/cbh children could sing, and I13 awarded them 49 marks out of 50. The Rhyl Choir would take 47 marks, and the Monai Choir 44. The conductor of the suc- cessful choir (Mr W. Humphreys) was invested by Mrs Rhydwcn Jones. There was a capital competition for the Eng- lish recitation, "The Railroad," for these under 15 years of age, the first prize going to Master Howel Jones, Bagillt, for a very vivid render- ing, Master Percy Jones, Rhyl, being second. In the po m competition, "Florence Nightin- gale, halt the prize was awarded to Mr J. Jones, Roe-wen, Talycain. "Clwydian'' was first for the best worked two buttonholes and rewi: an button, and "Marjorie" was second. Their proper names, however, were not made known. Mr Frank Nicholson, Gwespyr, was an easy Winner for the bass solo, "The Laughing Cava- lier." For the children's knitted petticoat, "Sarah" (whese name did not trar, spire) took first, and Mi, Sarah Prcffit, Mostyn, the second prize. In the children's act.on song competition three parties competed. The Rhy! Juvenile Choir re- presented "The Suffragettes," and in word and act: ?,c.n told h?,,w th4py wou!d rule the universe if they had the power. They were followed by tho Morfa Bach Choir, who were attired as Scotch fisher gÙls, ard sang and acted "Caller Herrin," Although they h; d the fish with them (which was evident by its pronounced flavour), they did not attempt th singing of the words in tfL,-? In giving hi3 adjudication, Prof. Jones said that when he saw the raid of the suffragettes he trembled in his shoes, for as a married man he was convinced that if the ladies cnoe got into Parliament they would role the roost, in the silm,- vv,! y ,is th?,y ruled the roost at home ii-oiv (lau-it?,?,r). The win.-iin,- p?rkv was, conducted by ;i4as M",ri., Prince's-.gtrect, Rhyl. The afternoon meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the charman. It was moved by the Rev T. t Read, who remarked that in pre- siding over an Eisteddfod audience Mr Rhydwen Jones had an easy ta-k oomparoo with the con- dur,t of a Rhyl To wn Council meeting (laugliter). Dr A. J. Parry seconded, and said he was de- lighted to fs(?B Mt- libn-dwen Jon--s preeent tlt,3,t ,da-Y, as it took his m:7id back t,) six'?v ye.,irs ago, c when h' was a rfi?ember of a Alutual Improve- ment Society over which Mr Jones' grandfather presided, and his sen was also a prominent mem- ber. Mr Rhydwen Jones' grandfather was a great literary man, and he was responsible for educating many young men as public speakers. He was pi -as d to find that in this case the talents and the ability of grandfather and father had proved hereditary, and that Mr A. Rhyd- wen Jones was a worthy descendant of those men (applause). THE EVENING MEETING. The second me ting was opaned with the sing- ing of "Aberystwyth" by the audience, Mr Bryan Warhurst presid'ng at the piano. There was a large gathering, and the proceedings lasted until a late hour. I Four parties competed for the duet (own choice) and in giving the prize to Mr Frank Nicholson, Gwespyr, and Mrs Lees, Buxton (Madame Gert- rude Humphrey s, late of Rhyl), the adjudicator stat d that their rendering of a love eorig was faultless. There were eleven competitors for the best brush drawing or pencil eketch of a village sccne, and the first prise went to Mies Mary Brown, Bedford-street, Rhyl, end the second to Miss Phillips, Ivy Cottage, Rhyl. Another novelty introduced by the committee "Was a competition on any instrument selected by the competitor. One came forward and gave a ")'I o fine (txr)7,,?iti f tft7? Powers of the mouth- organ, the second tried a cornct solo, and the third the euphonium. In dealing with this com- petition the adjudicator complimented the ooin- niitte-c on their novelty, and said that instrumen- tal playing should be encouraged. As to the lad with the mouth organ, he was somewhat sur- pri-e-d nt ",hit he h?qd e,4ozi,?, but I.,e felt th4at it was ability wasted. The mouth-organ was a toy, and he was aston'slied at the expression that a led could get. from it. As to the cornet player, he r gretted that conditions were again«t .him, as cornets hrd a knack of altering their tcne when brought into a warm room from the open sir The euphoniim player had charmed all who had heard him, and he made his instru- ment blend beautifully with the piano. Mr Williams, in his presidential address, con- sidered it a great honour that one who had beer in Rhyl for so short a time should be asked to preside at that meeting, as the Eisteddfod was an honourable as well as an ancient insfctition. It wa. really the Olvmpie or Grand Assizes of Wales, and had th- ability, like all groat tilings, to adapt itfelf to tin times and prrsont day cir- cumstances. Tim:; was when the E^tcddfod wnfi conducted entirely in Welsh, but that day they had the bilingual el ment, and it showed how well they were able to adspt their great institu- tion. The Eisteddfod was perhaps the only really national institution which existed tc-dav, and no matter where Welshmen Were located they man- figod to get up an Eilst ddfod. They had gather- ings of that kind in Patagonia, vther-e he hed resided for many years; they bad them in Aus- tralia and in the United.States. The usual tiding for Welsh men was (o first establish a chapel, then to found a Sunday school, and the Eisteddfod fol- lowed as a matter of course. He hoped that they would keep their Eisteddfod pure, and that it would always foster the best- that there was in mu) literature, and ajt.
