CONFIDENCE JUSTIFIED. 1I
CONFIDENCE JUSTIFIED. I Secure in their island home, the British people are quite able to get on with their work, and it is the first duty Of every man to act confidently and to endeavour to inspire confidence in others. The -ba4;s of trade is confidence, and it is a lamentable thing when men standing, and especially writers in the press, spread idle fears. In spite of the war, a great part of our normal trade can be con- ducted, and what losses are reasonably to be expected through Continental warfare may easily be made up, or more than made up, by gains in commerce with places outside Europe. Therefore, let us banish panic talk, and avail ourselves of the extremely favourable op- portunities aSorded in our own country and in other countries by the complete destruction of German competition. Imports into the United States from Germany last year were worth over £30,000,000. The British trader has a magnificent opportunity to replace this commerce, and equally good chances offer themselves in Asia, in Africa, in Canada, in South America, in Australia, and in New Zealand.
