-"-"-"---THE ART OF SWIMMING.
THE ART OF SWIMMING. Now the season has approached, we wish to call the attention of the public to a question of vital importance to the inhabitants of ¡ an island in general, and to a watering place like Barmouth in particular, viz., the Art of Swim- ming. Attempts have been made at various times to form Cricket Club, Tennis Club, and Bowling Club. The Golf Club too has seen comparatively prosperous days, but we are not aware that a ser- ious effort has ever been made to form a Swimming Club. In the case of a man, the power of swim 11ling is acquired, and not natural. As compared with the lower animals, to most of which it comes perfectly easily, he is at a disadvantage in its acquisition, owing not to his greater relative weight so much as to the posi- tion of his centre of gravity, along with the fact that in the case of quadrupeds, the motions which serve to support and propel them in the water are very similar to those of locomotion on land. No race of mankind, however, can be mentioned to whicjh the art is unknown, and in many barbarous countries it is more widely diffused and carried to greater ? perfection than amongst the 0 civilized nations of the v?orld. | For learning to swim, a quiet sandy beach is the best place, as sea water is more buoyant than fresh. We venture to assert, without any fear of contradiction, ?y,itlioiit aiix,- feLti-oicop, etl on, that the advantages of forming a Swimming Club at Barmouth are unique and unrivalled. i be g i.,i tl,,e To begin with, the bathing I, ground is all that can be desired, But though this is absolutely necessary, other watering places can boast of an equally good beach. We should like to know, however, what watering place in Wales, or indeed in the kingdom, can put forth the proud claim of having five stalwart young men, all in one family, who are directly or indirectly, interested in the bathing, who are experts in the different strokes of the art. In addition to numerous prizes won for speed in local competitions, these young men hold several certificates and medals from the Royal Humane Society for saving lives from drowning, un<Jer the most trying and perilous circum- stances. Here, then, is the material close at hand, it only remains for some enterprising individual to take the matter in hand, and the co-operation of some, or all these young men—Messrs Davies' Bros., Old "Belle Vue, a most flourishing SwimmingC 1 ub cou 1 d be established, The benefits that would accrue from the i nstitution of a course of lessons in this art can only be imagined. Now that Mr Evan Davies, tlie principal partner in the bathing interest, has been married to one of the most powerful expert lady swimmer in the island, we ven- ture to predict that should an in- fluential Swimming Club, includ- ing ladies, be formed, young Mrs Davies would be only too pleased to further its interest in more ways than one. In these days of cruel cata- strophies on the sea, the expert swimmer has an incomparatively better chance to save his life than he who knows not the art. Even in the absence of a properly constituted Swimming Club, Messrs Davies are prepared to consider applica- tions for a series of lessons. Surely our E1 e m e n t a r y and S e o o a da r y School Authorities should take the matter up, and it ought to have a prominent place in the curriculum of a sea-side town like Barmouth.
FROM DOLGELLEY TO BARMOUTH.
FROM DOLGELLEY TO BAR- MOUTH. A resident of our neighbouring town, Dolgeiiey, makes the following statement on an important subject. Although there have been many Bar- mouth cases reported in the local press from at time time, we deem this worthy of note here. Mr G.- R. Johnson, of Wood Vi Dolgeiiey, says:—"A short time ago kidneys were affected, for I had a dull, continuous pain in that region. I felt sleepy in the mornings and seemed to have had no resc after rising. The urinary system showed signs of dis- order. "But I found Doan's backache kidney pills relieved me. They brightened me up and cleansed the kidney system, and I was soon in my usual good health. I should certainly recommend Doan's pills with every confidence as an excellent medicine for kidney disorders (Signed) "G. R. Johnson." If you have any such clear signed of kidney and bladder disorders as back- ache, urinary troubles, gravel, dropsy lumbilgo or rheumatism, persevere with Doan's backache kidney pills until every trace of the dread kidney disease is gone. Doan's pills assist the urinary system like a laxative assists the bowels. Price 2/9 a box 6 boxes, 13/9 of ail dealers. or from Foster, McClellan Co., 8, Wells-street, Oxford-street, Lon- don, W. Don't ask for- Backache and Kidney Pills—ask distinctly for Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, the same as Mr Jobuson had.
