Aldernanic Distinctio1
Aldernanic Distinctio1 It is with much pleasure that we learn, just as we go to press, that out- able and popular townsman, Mr T, Martin Williams, Bod Idris, has been made an Alderman for the County of Merioneth. The appointment was made at the County Council, held at Festiniog yesterday (Wednesday5). Mr Martin Williams fills a vacancy caused by the death of one of Barmouth's most useful public man, viz Alderman John Evans. All the inhabitants will rejoice at this mark or respect to their feHow-towns- man. Mr Williams has for years been an able and active member of the Coun- ty Council, and has always been keenly alive to the best interest of Barmouth. He is an active and useful tnember of the School Managers of both Elemen- tary and Secondary Schools, as well as many other public bodies in the town, and is one of the foremost men in con- nection with the County of which he has just been made an Alderman.—We heartily congratulate Mr Martin Wil- liams on his elevation to this seat of honour among his peers, and we also congratulate Barmouth on having such an able representative to look atter its interest.

"t Electioil.-An election will take place on Saturday next to fill the vacancy en the Dolgelley Board of Guardians caused by the death of Alderman John Evans. The candidates contesting the seat are Mr William Owen, Craigmynach, and Mr Henry Freeman, Glanmeon. Art Picture House.—The Art Picture House has been crowded nightly this week, and the picture programme has been one of the best ever seen. The star picture for to-day (Thursday), Friday and Saturday will be "A burn ing train." Afternoons at 8, evenings continuous performance from 7 till 10.80. Admission, Is. 6d. and 8:1. Soldiers.—The decision of the Urban Council to allow the 4th North Midland Howitzer Brigade to encamp on the Rec- reation Ground has aroused some criticism in the town, whilst others fav- our and support the Council's action. Owing to a difficulty in getting land for drilling,.puiposes, it has been decided not to bring the brigade to Barmouth. Whit-Week. — More people paid a visit to the town last week than during Whitsuntide for many years past. Cer- tain branches of industry received an encouraging impetus, char-a-bancs, and vehicles of all description—including motor cars, carriages, etc., were in great demand. The motor boats, sailing boats, and small sliiffs, which had been so tastily 'painted and done up for the season, lent a charm to the beautiful Estuary by flittering like" living things" on the smooth surface.of the glassy sea. The bathing, tennis, etc were also in full swing. The Art Pic- ture House and the Royal Magnets were well patronised. This briskness augers well for a busy and prosperous season, which is eagerly looked forward to on all hands. A Sacred Concert was held on Sunday night from 8.30 to 9 30, under the aus- pices of the Male Voice Choir, conducted by Mr Griffith Griffiths. By kind per- mission of Messrs Pare and Bowdep, who are always ready to give a helping band to anything and everything in Barmouth, the Choir were allowed to appear on their stand. A very large crowd of visitors as well as inhabitants listened with rapt attention to the beautiful singing of the Choir whose rendering of such pieces as "Crossing the Plain," The Martyrs of the Arena," showed a distinct improvement after their six months preparation. This was the first of a series of sacred concerts which the Choir intend to hold during the season. Open-air singing has been going on at Barmouth on Sunday even- ings for over thirty-five years without a break, and the sole object of the present arrangement is to continue a custom that has given so much pleasure to visitors for all these years, and have that done under proper control and with reverance. Solos were sung at intervals by Mr Edwin Kay and Mr Ellis M. Evans which were greatly ap- preciated. Weather permitting, the I Choir will hold their second concert on the Magnets Stand next Sunday, commencing punctually at 8.30 to conclude at half. past nine. Collision.—On Tuesday morning, a } motor car belonging to the Barmouth Hotel collided with the C terdclaniel Dairy Trap in St, Ann's Square. Luckily no one was injured, but the trap was f-lightly damaged. The Royal Magnets—-b :ght and cheerful harbingers of (he sum- mer, made their welc. me ap- pearance on the front last Saturday night. Their early advent bad been looked forward to with keen anticipa- tion, and we but feebly echo the general sentiment of the large c owd that formed the audience on the first night, when we state that the troupe was as witty, pithy, funny and interesting as ever. As usual their new songs are a careful selection, such as cannot offend the finest sentiment, and withal full of humour. Parents can with confidence leave their little boys and girls to enjoy the wit and humour of this elevated troupe, while at the same time they can enjoy the benefits of the fresh air by the silvery sea. There are this year some new faces on the popular stand, but we abstain at this early stage from making any individual comments .As a whole we consider the party as eminently fitted to suit our visitors, and render them an opportunity for mirth and laughter after a day of pleasant rambles along the hills, or any other of the interesting excursions provided for them.
