I 8A¡MOUIH oooisiL. I SPECIAL MEETING. I Relief Work for the Unemployed Sunday Observance at Barmouth. Lively Discussion. I Relief Committee Appointed. I The Mussel Industry. I A Long Sitting. A special meeting of the above Counci was held on Monday night. Present; Mr Rhys Jones, J.P. (chairman), Mr J. Pryce Jones (vice-chairman), Dr. J. Pugh Jones, Messrs D. E. Davies, William Owen, Owen Williams, R. G. Moore, John Morgan, Henry Freeman, and Edward Williams, with Messrs R. Llewelyn Owen (deputy clerk), and T. R. Parry (surveyor). I RELIEF WORK. The Chairman stated that the County Council would at an early date consider what schemes they would adopt with a view of obtaining a portion of the Government Grant for relief work so as minimise the risk of unemployment, and the meeting had been called to consider what was required locally with a view to provision being made in the County Council scheme. The Deputy Clerk read estimates pre- pared by the Surveyor providing for a total expenditure of £ 1,764. These pro- vided for tar macadamizing the main road from Victoria Place to Parsel at a cost of £1,059 and for effecting the widening of certain parts of the Llanaber Road. After a long discussion, it was de- cided, on the proposition of Mr Henry Freeman, seconded by Mr R.G. Moore, that the Council should present the schemes prepared by the Surveyor to the County Council for consideration, it being reported that the Main Roads Committee met at Barmouth the fol- lowing day to consider all the schemes presented. I SUNDAY OBSERVANCE. A deputation from the Free Church Council, consisting of the Rev. Meirion Davies, Rev. E. Afonwy Williams, Mr Joseph Thomas, and Mr Richard Davies, appeared before the Council with refer- ence to Sunday Observance at Bar- mouth. The Rev. Meirion Davies, who acted as spokesman, at the outset thanked the 1 Council for what they had done in the past and hoped that they would continue to give the same support so as to have the Sabbath day kept as holy as possible. What the Free Church Coun- cil req u i red was to have the co-operation of the Urban Council as regards curtail- ing the practise of boats and vehicles going out on Sundays. They were well aware :that the Urban Council were fully alive to the prosperity of the town as a watering place, but he believed that the moral and spiritual life of the town was even more than that. He understood that the Urban Council had done all, in their power in the matter but the Free Church Council would like to see the Council applying for a bye- law which would give power to the Council to issue six days licence in re- spect of boating and vehicles. Perhaps it was too late for the Council to do anything in the matter this summer, but he hoped that they would take the suggestion into consideration for next season. Mr R. G. Moore asked could they, be informed of any instance as regards boats and vehicles going out on Sundays so that the Council could go at the root of the matter. The Chairman said that it would be better if the deputation were allowed to finish what they had to say first. The Rev. E. Afonwy Williams said he fully endorsed what Mr Davies had ex- plained. They all knew that carriages and boats went out on Sundays, and even touting was going on for boating.
