Ratepayers' Meeting. On Friday evening last, the annual ratepayers meeting, convened by the Urban District Council so that the four retiring members could give an account of their stewardship, was held at the Belle Vue Hall. The four retiring members were Messrs Rbys Jones, William Owen, David 0. Hughes and Robert LI. Williams, who were seeking re-election and the other contesting carididates were Messrs Evan Griffith, Edward Davies and Ernest Lloyd, all of whom were on the platform, supported by the I members of tbe Council and the officials. The chair was taken by Mr Rhys Jones, J.P.. and there was a large attendance. The meeting was opened with the singing of Hen Wlad fy Nhadau under the leadership of Ex- Sergeant Rowlands.. The Chairman, in the course of his opening remarks, said that the Council were very thankful to the ratepayers for the manner in which they bad paid their rates, and without that assistance the Council could not have gone on so successfully. The Council bad carried the year through without an adverse balance at the Bank. Mr Robert Lloyd Williams then addressed the meeting and referred to the improvements executed by the Council during the year. Ten plans of new bouses had been approved of, which would mean about £ 100 more in the rates in future. He thought that one of the best things done by the Council during the past year was the buying of Cellfechah Form, and be was glad to be able to say that the purchase bad been completed that week. Mr D. 0. Hughes, chairman of the Finance Committee, gave a full report of the financial position of the Council. At the beginning of the year the Council had an overdraft of £51 at the Bank, but that day the Council had a balance ofJE183 on the year's working. The total amount of rates collected by the Rate Collector during the year was Y,3,994, which he considered was very encouraging, and the ratepayers were to be highly complimented for meeting the Council in the way they bad done. He regretted the great loss the Council, and indeed, the whole town bad sustained in the death of Mr R. G. Moore, Lion Hotel. Mr William Owen, said that he bad been on the Council now for over 20 years. Thirteen years ago the liabilities of the Council on loans were £43,337, but that day it bad come down to £ 26,316, and during the last thirteen ,years the Council bad reduced their liabilities by 1'18,000. The town was gradually paying off its loans. Mr Rhys Jones also gave a lengthy re- port of the Council's doings. Addresses were also delivered by the 3 new candidates, vjz., Messrs 'Ed ward Davies, Evan Griffith and Ernest Lloyd followed by Dr. Pugb Jones, Messrs Henry Freeman, Owen Williams, D. E. Davies, and Edward Williams. The singing of God Save the King brought the meeting to a close.

BARMOUTH. I St akes.—Last week Mr Ellis Morgan Tainewyddion, killed two large snakes in his garden at Llanaber. Personal.—The Rev. W. Glandwr- Morgan completes his ninth year pastorate at Jubilee Road next Sunday Civil Service.—Master Willie Maurer, Gwril View, has successfully passed an examination in the Civil Service De- partment. Election.—Saturday April 24th., has been fixed as the date for the election of a condidate on the Urban District Council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr R. G. Moore, Lion Hotel. Promotion.—Mr Teale, of Wellington, has been appointed as manager of the Barmoutb bookstall, in the place of Mr Eliis, who has been piomoted as manager of the bookstall at Machyn-. lleth. The Snowdrop Band,The last meet- ing of the session was held on Friday last. The hymns were given out by Gracie Richards and Kitty Evans. Nellie Jones, Aelfor Cottage, read a por- tion of the Scriptures. Miss Adam, M.A., County School, gave an instruc- tive address on "Ambition," which the girls very much appreciated. (Melton Hall.—A very enjoyable concert was given to the Belgian Refugees at the above Hall on Wednes- day evening last by the following :— Misses Mary Evans, Jenny Jones, and L. E. Rowlands, and Mr Walter Davies as vocalists, and Messrs William Jones, David Roberts, and Stanley Jones as instrumentalists. Miss Mennell, the manageress, wishes to heartily thank all the friends who so kindly entertained by their talents the Belgians during the winter months. Soldier's Farewell.-We cull the following from an Australian paper. A gathering of the staff of Rowlands, I Ltd,, was held at the works at midday 1 in honour of Mr Gomer Thomas, one of the employees, who has been accepted for the Third Expeditional Force. Mr J. J. Griffith, the general manager, presided, and expressed pleasure at the fact that young Thomas, who only arrived from Wales about a year ago, was returning to the old country so soon to fight for the empire Thomas;heshid, was the first employee of Rowlands to volunteer for service, and they were proud of him, though be was quickly followed by young Richard Rowlands, who was hopeful of being accepted for service. Mr W. House, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr Thomas with a wristlet watch as a parting gift, and wished him a successful campaign. A generons distribution of Rowlands' best followed, and the health of the departing soldier was honoured. with a bumper." Mr Gomer Thomas is the son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Thomas, Victoria Place, and Mr J. J. Griffith, the general manager, is the son of Mr G. Griffith, late Chemist, Barmouth; who is now staying with his family at Dolgelley. Lifeboat.—On Saturday afternoon,the lifeboat, under the coxswainsbip of John Morris, Tanyfedw, was launched for its quarterly practise. Preaching Meeting.—To-night(Thurs- day) and all day Good Friday, special preaching services will be held at the Wesleyan Chapel. The special preachers being the Rev. Isfryn Hughes, and Abi Williams. Military.—Mr John Erie Griffith, son of Mr and Mes. Robert Griffith, Vulcan Villa,.who emigrated to Canada about two years ago, has joined the 98th Regiment at Fort William, Canada, as a bugler. Park Road Chapel Sunday Sohool.— The following have been elected as officers of the above Sunday School Superintendents, Mr Owen Edwards, Rose Hill and Mr Elias R. Williams,. Greenhill; Secretary, Mr LewisWilliams, Ceylon House. Obituary.—Many of our readers will be sorry to learn of the death of Miss Ellen Thomas, Dyffryn, which took place on Friday last, at the age of 68 years. Deceased was well known and highly respected by a large number of the inhabitants, and had during the last thirty eight years carried on a dairy business at Barmouth. The funeral took place on Tuesday at Dyffryn. Football.—On Friday afternoon, a football match was played on the Recreation Ground between the County School F.C. and the Belgian College F.C., and resulted in an easy win for the latter by seven goals to one. The Belgian players were much heavier than the local players. Mr John R. Hum- phreys acted as referee. On Saturday afternoon the Belgian team defeated a local team by tbi-ee goals to one. Urban Council.—A special meeting of the above Council was held on Thursday ? afternoon. Present :—Messrs Rhys Jones, J.P., fchairman-1 Henry Freeman, William Owen, Edward Williams and D. O. Hughes with Mr R. Llewelyn Owen (deputy-clerk). The seal of the Council was fixed to the conveyance of Cellfechan Farm from Capt. and Mrs Williams, Belgrave. The farm has been purchased for purposes of pleasure grounds and public walks, at the price of C2,800, which sum has been borrowed on mortgage at 3t per cent. Urban Council Election.-On Satur- day last an election took place for the four vacant seats on the Urban Dis- trict Council. Great interest was taken in the election, and seven candidates contested the vacant seats. At 10.30 p.m. the result was made known as follows:— Mr Robert LI. Williams. 3.12 Mr Rhys Jones 289 Mr William Gwen 242 Mr David O. Hughes. 241 Mr Edward Davies 217 Mr Evan Griffith 174 Mr Ernest Lloyd 121 The first four were elected. There was only one spoilt vote out of 478 who voted. Mr William George acted as returning officer, assisted by Mr Einion Evans, Ll.B., Mr R. Llewelyn OweD, and Councillor John Roberts.
