The latter did so and arplied that their wage should be increased from 20s. to 24s. a week. The Council decided to stipulate that they would not pay more than the usual £ 1 a week. The Deputy Clerk reported that the following employees of the Council had sent in their resignation to terminate their services with the Council on Sat- urday, May 17th :—Messrs. John Ro- berts, Griffith Edwards. Robert Thomas, Owen Owens, Robert Griffith and David Jones. The men gave as their reason I for taking this step that the Council I bad not met them as regards increase of wages in face of the increase in the cost tlf living. In reply to a question, the Surveyor stated that the men handed in their notices on Monday morning. A long discussion then followed as to whether the notices sent in by the work- men were in order, as they were banded in on Monday morning, and it was agreed that they were in order. After another long discussion, it was decided, on the proposition of Mr Owen Williams, seconded by Mr Edward Wil- liams, to invite the workmen to meet the Council on Friday night to discuss the matter further. The Council sat for two hours.

Pryce Jones (chairman), Owen Williams (vice-chairman), Ed- ward Williams, Rhys Jones, William Owen, R. Lloyd Williams, Henry Freeman, J. Llewelyn Davies, D. 0. Hughes and John Morgan; with Messrs. R. The Chairman explained that the meeting had been called to meet the Council's workmen who bad sent in their resignation. The following workmen attended the meeting :—Messrs. Griffith Edwards, Owen Owens, Robert Thomas, Robert Griffith and David Jones. The Chairman said that six of the workmen had sent in their resignations, which expired on the following Satur- day, and the Council bad advertised in the Barmouth Advertiser for employees at a salary of J61 a week, which applica- tions would not come in until Tuesday. As the cost of living bad increased the Council bad under consideration the question of move wages. -M- c Mr Robert Thomas, who a3ted as spokesman, said they considered that £1 a week wages was not sufficient to meet the cost of living at the present time. The Chairman said that the Council were unanimous in favour that the wages should be increased in face ot the cost of living, and a war bonus would be given by the Council. The Council would like to know whether they would go on working for another week, and after Tuesday night they would know what the war bonus would be. Mr David Jones—You could not tell us now what the war bonus would be. The Cbairman-No. The Council has not yet decided on the war bonus. Mr Robert Thomas said they were quite prepared to meet the wishes of the Council, and as some of them had other places to go could the Council inform them what amount, woutd the war bonus be. The Chairman said that the Council would meet on Tuesday to decide the matter. After a consultation the workmen con- sented to work for another week. Mr Henry Freeman asked whether the men refused to work for tl-tlie wages offered by the Council -without any bonus at all. He wanted the public to know that and also the contractors in the town. All the men replied in the affirmative. Mr Henry Freeman wished the press to make a note of that. He had done his duty to the ratepayers in asking for that information. It was reported that Mr John Roberts (one of the Council's carters) bad left the Council, as he had had another situation. Messrs. R. Lloyd Williams and Wm. Owen spoke in high terms of the good services rendered by Mr John Roberts during the 16 years be had been in the Council's employ. THE WATER QUESTION. Mr John Morgan appealed to the Council to reconsider their decision as regards laying water pipes along the Marine Parade. He had inspected several houses on the Front and had found that there was an abundant supply of water. The Chairman said that the Council bad decided to do the work and the water pipes bad been ordered. Mr John Morgan said that it was only waste of money. The matter then dropped. RATES. I Mr John Morgan suggested that the Council should take into consideration the advisability of reducing the rates for the coming year.

The latter consented to abide with the war bonus offered by the Council. The Chairman said it was now open for the Council to decide what amount the war bonus would be. Dr. J. Pugh Jones said it was not right for the Council to have suggested to the workmen on Friday night that a war bonus would be given. The .Chairman—Is there to be a war bonus or not ? Mr R. Lloyd Williams proposed that the Council should give a war bonus, Mr William Owen, in seconding, said that other towris in North Wales were giving increase wages to the workmen. Mr Owen Williams said be could not see the way very clear to give a war bonus, especially at the present time when no one knew what sort of a season they would have in Barmouth. But in face of what the Council had promised the workmen last Friday night they could not go from it. Dr. J. Pugh Jones said that the Coun- cil's workmen had their wages in full when ill, and he thought that they were treated honourably by the Council. Mr J. Llewelyn Davies said that the Council had already promised a war bonus to the workmen. Mr Owen Williams—We can't get out of that.
