WAR SAVINGS IN THE HOME.
WAR SAVINGS IN THE HOME. Great Britain needs five million pounds every day to carry on the War. -1 h "t ;:j j 1: ,l! 1. '.1 t.4. 1-; 1 a! (t. to be found by those who are nob fighting, and it can only be found if a!i are willing to do two things. U) to reduce the consumption of everything that is not abso!utely required for good health and fit- ness for work and (2) to increase as far as possible the power of the Nation to make munitions of .war, and to produce goods for ex- port to other Countries. In all questions about goods and service it is necessary to regard the Household rather than bbe Family as the unit. The household consumption includes the services rendered in main- taining the house and its in- mates; the goods consumed or acquired by them, as food, clothes, furniture, fuel, light; and the general charges for cleaning, renovating, decorating, etc. Every household that has not done so already should ho!d a council of war aad ascertain how much of the tola! consumption can be sacrificed for the time being. Services sbouM be valued even more highly than goods. For instance, in a. house of several servants, if, by cooperation in theworkofthenmidsandsimpH- cation of the standard of living by the famiiy, more of the baking and washing is done at home, and two of the younger maids are set free to t&ke the places of men caHed to the Colours, the housebotd cana-dd two units to the Army for supply or export trade. Besides, by saving the maintenance of two persons and simplifying the general standard of Jiving, savings will ba avail- able for the War Loan. Before the War, the various dudes in a Household were as clearly defined as they are in a Bank, an Office, or a Shop. Ail that is now changed. The owner of the shop is seen sweeping the fteps and taking down the ahut- terp. The older partner in the omce now answers his own tele- phone caHs, and does the work of -bi,4 younger partner and the have gone. The men at the Front, whatever their up- b inking and education, are dicing trenches, cleaning out 8t{! btPR, scavenging camps, and ttj(-i-e is no question as to whose wo'k it is Everything now is done for the Conn try, whether by a barrister digging a trench, a bead cook scrubbing her kitchen, or a wenhhy lady making her own or her chitdren's clothes. The united efforts of the whote popu- Iltion are directed towards win- cing the War.
