I A CANDIDATE FROM TUMBLE. A public meeting was held at the Ivorites Hall, Ammanford, on Monday evening in support of the candidature of Mr. Stephen O. Davies, Great Mountain Colliery, Tumble, for the post of Sub-Miners' Agent of the Anthracite Miners' District. The candidate was supported by the Rev. Oliver Bowen, B.A., Cardiff, and the chair was occupied by Mr. T. G. Davies, Ammanford. The Chair- man said they were present to discuss some of the great and fundamental issues of life, and from the knowledge he had of the speakers that meeting would not reflect the spirit and practice of the orthodox electioneering gather- ing. Mr. Stephen O. Davies then addressed the meeting, and he immediately expressed himself wholly in agreement with the re- marks of the Chairman. The speaker pointed out that the dominant characteristics of the industrial world to-day were the universal discontent manifested by the workers, and the clear recognition by their leaders that the present relation between capital awl lahour must be radically changed. All their griev- ances as well as all the grievances of the in- dustrial workers, in their ultimate analysis, could be traced to the one sole cause, viz., the monopoly of the means of material existence. He wanted them as industrial workers to be conscious that all modern states were indus- trial states, i.e., they rested upon industry. upon the activities of the industrial workers. If the industrial army of workers withheld their labour for any length of time, then chaos and paralysis were the inevitable conse- quences. He therefore exhorted them to rise to the full dignity of the indispensable ser- vices that they were rendering to this earthly scheme of things. The workers, asserted the speaker, must realise that every great social evil which existed to-day amongst them, had its chief, if not its whole, cause in the unjust industrial conditions obtaining in the country. Their local grievances, such as the 5 per cent. difference, the six turns for five for nightmen, the mal-administration of the Compensation and Minimum Wage Acts, etc., should appear, and would in fact appear to men conscious of their position in the life of the state, but as the merest babbles that could be annihilated by one collective breath of the workers. The candidate was followed by the Rev. Oliver Bowen, B.A., Cardiff, 'who delivered a remarkable and well-appreciated speech. He knew from experience that Mr. Davies had already abundantly proved what it Î:; to suffer for his principles, and to fight as a man should fight for the interests and welfare of the people of his class.
