ILlandovery Gossip.
Llandovery Gossip. [By CIW BOWDDWR. uJ I am writing these notes under the pro- tecting foliage of a clump of gnarled old oak trees in the silence which is relieved only by the gentle swish of the wind amid the branches. My seat is a grassy slope, terminer ting abruptly in a succession of bush meackms where cattle are lasily brawsing. The day is on its decline and the shadows of the trees are lengthening before the receding sun. It is favourite haunt of visitors, and this glorious Altgust everl-ig there are an unusual numbel present, most if not all bent on the one object of obtanmg the help to a revival of health and strength such an elevation with its breezes affords. The surroundings too, with their wealth of greenery after the recent rain and the panorama of hill and dale lit up by the sinking sun elusively vanishing in the distance present a picture that cannot fail to conduce to a placid and pleasant state of mind. The spot I have been rhapsoding about is the Crug at Llandovery. I have often won- dered, and there are many others who share my feelings, why is it that the inhabitants do not to a far greater extent avail themselves of walks over it. It may be that the old adage here holds good to "familiarity breeds con- tempt. On no other ground is it possible to account for this apparent want of appre- ciation of its beauties. I have heard it said -that once upon a time, and that not so long ago neither, that the Town Clerk had a chance of acquiring it at a by no means exorbitant price. If this is true, a grand opportunity of adding to the town's attractiveness was lost, and the City Fathers shewed a regrettable lack of vision. There is a certain date which I desire my Readers to impress on their memories. It is the 27th of September next. On that day the Demobs." of the Ancient Borough are holding an eisteddfod with an attractive pro- gramme. It is safe to bring to the place a big crowd of keen competitors. No public appointment of recent date has been received with more geperai app-robaiion than the elevation of Councillor W. J. Esmond, 9, College View, to the magisterial bench, and it is safe to say that no appoint- ment has been more deserved. His services to the public have always been given un- grudgingly and untiringly. The perseverance with which he has studied public affairs and attained a complete mastery of them reflects the greatest credit on his efforts. As a Democrat and a Trade Unionist myself, I rejoice to think that the intellectual gifts of the working man, often developed, as I am sure they were in Mr. Esmond's case, in face of great obstacles and difficulties, are at length tardily receiving recognition. Mr. Esmond's public activities include the chair- manship of the Llandovery Branch N U.R., Governor of the County School, member of the Sailors and Soldiers' Pension Commit- tee, and of the Food Control, secretary and part-founder of the Public Institute. He was also a member of the now defunct Military Tribunal.
IGARNANT AND GLANAMMAN R.A.O.B.
I GARNANT AND GLANAMMAN R.A.O.B. On Saturday even ing last, the members of the combined Garnant and Glamamman Lodges, R.A.O.B., entertained about 100 of their discharged and demobilised sailor and soldier brothers to a capital dinner, which was most ably catered for by Bro. David and Mrs. Rees, Cross Keys Hotel, Glanamman. The Vicar, the Rev. W. Williams, and the chaplain to the Order, the Rev. Evan Davies, Cwmgorse, were present. The Chaplain dealt at some length on the excellent welcome given to their brother guests, and also read a few lines composed on his way to the meeting and appropriate to the occasion. These were as follow: Bow the head, bend the knee, for He hath given us victory." This item was greatly appre- ciated. He also spoke of the great sacri- fices which out boys and brothers had made both on land and on sea. After the tables were cleared, a capital miscellaneous programme was gone through, the Vicar occupying the chair, and in his opening address touched upon the deeds per- formed by a number of these brave brothers, all for freedom, and for which many a brave and dear brother had paid the supreme penalty. He urged upon them to thank God that he had given the victory to us, and not to the Germans. He then proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the brother host and hostess, and all who had so ably attended to their needs that evening. The toast to the" King and Reyaf F amly" was proposed by Gunner William Lowe, R.M.A., followed by the singing of the National Anthem. The toast to The Army and Navy was proposed by Bro. Edwin Reft (Ceidrim), who referred in a very able manner to the heroism of Britain' s Con- temptible Little Army." Sergt. Jack Geoajge, R.A.M.C., who was in France for about four years, responded. A toast to The R.A.O.B. was pro- posed by Corpl. F. W. Gunning, R.W.F., who spoke of the good and noble work per- formed and carried out by the Order, and wished it all the success it deserved. Also he thaiked all the brothers, on behalf of the discharged sailors and soldiers present, for the welcome they had given them, and for the way they had all been treated. He asked them all to rise and sing the toast to Our Absent BTothers on Land and Sea," which was responded to. The following programme was then gone through:—Overture, Bro. Robert Wileon; pianoforte and violin duet, Bro. Robert Wilson and Bro. Evans; song, Priv. W. Benjamin (encored) song, Sergt. W. Allen (encored) song, Miss N. Rees (encored) song, Corpl. H. Davies (encored) song, Bro. David Thomas (encored) song, Bro. David Rees (encored) duet, Keep the Old Flag Flying," Priv. Jack and Mr. Frank Watkins (encored); song, Bro. Phil Rogers (encored) comic song, Bro. J. Oram (encored) song, Miss N. Rees (encored) song, Sergt. 1. Hurley (encored). Before concluding, Priv. D. T. David, S.L.I., proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman, Bro. Robert Wilson, and Bio. Evans, and to all who had contributed to the evening's enjoyment, not forgetting the com- mittee and brothers, all of whom had worked so hard to give them such a treat. ■Priv. Jack Watkins, S.L.I., seconded the proposition, which the soldier and sailor bro- thers gave with musical honours. The singing of the National Anthem ter- minated the proceedings.
