IWeekly Film Notes.
I Weekly Film Notes. Major Ian Hsy Beith, betted known as Ian Hay, he author of so many popular stories the war, including The First Ha., id Thousand and The Last MUt.n which has lately been published, and of the delightful and successful play, Tilly of Blooms- bury, which is now running at the Apollo Theatre, London, is on his way back from America. He had gone there on long leave, and had joined the literary staff of Cecil De Mille at the Famous Players-Lasky studios at Los Angeles. His first work was in con- nection with the film which has been adapted from Sir J. M. Barrie. He has now been called back by the War Office on urgent business. Before he left Los Angeles a dinner was given in his honour by Mr. De Mille and the Film Colony at Hollywood. Burton Holmes, who coined the word Travelogues to describe his lec- tures illustrated by moving* pictures as iar back as 1904, when he gave his first series of talks in this country at the Queen's Hall, intends to visit Britain again shortly to dieliver another series of these lectures. Towards the end of the war he secured pictures shewing the ravages of the Germans in many parts of Europe, and these are to be shewn in comparison with the picture of the same spots which Mr. Holmes took before the war. His Paramount Travel films are one of the features of the pro- grammes of the better-class cinemas. Scenario writing is among the lucra- tive professions on the other side of the Atlantic, according to a statement by Eve Unsell, the celebrated scenario expert, who has lately taken charge of that department of the Famous Players- Lasky British Producers, Ltd. Almost the minimum price for a screen adapta- tion, she says, is £ 20 per reel, which is £ 100 for an average length picture. For an original story, plus adaptation, the price- averages about £ 500, while for special pictures-films of six or seven reels— £ 600 is quite an ordi- nary price. The British Company in- tends to encourage the native writer, and if prices approximating to these are to be paid, there will bpen quite a good field for what has hitherto been a neg- lected and underpaid art in this country. The announcement that Gertrude Elliott is to produce a new comedy at the St. James' Theatre shortly is addi- tionally interesting in view of the fact that a picture version of the same play, "Co me out of the Kitchen, with Mar- guerite Clark as the bright particular star, will be forthcoming early in Janu- ary next. The story, in its original form as a novel, was written by Alice Duer Miller, and was dramatised by A. E. Thomas. The scenario for the film j version was done by Clara Beranger, one of the ablest adaptors in the busi- ness. Geraldine Fafrar, whose latest Art- 1 craft picture, "The Devil Stone," will shortly be seen, has gained as much fame as a film star as she has as an opera singer. After some musical training at Boston and New York she was allowed ■ to try her voice beforea Melba, as a result of which a substantial offer was made to her by the Damrosch Opera Company. This was refused, as was i also an even bigger offer from Grau, i and Miss Farrar came to Europe, where 1 after further study she made her debut j at the age of nineteen. After several years of Europaan success she returned to America to sing at the Metropolitan •* Opera House. Her entry into the picture world attracted much attention, and her first film, "Carmen," stamped J her as an actress of unusual talent. It 1 was while engaged in studio work that she met Lou Tellegen, who assisted her J in a number of ways in one of her earli- est films, and the acquaintance ripened eventually into marriage. Two of her Artcraft pictures yet to come are "Maria Rosa" and "T emptation." i I
