I Amman Valley Sporting Gossip On Saturday last the local Rugby and Soccer clubs opened the season with alt earnestness. Personally, I am very much disappointed w,ith the result of the game Arnmanford versus Brynammaa. A pointless draw does not for a moment stand to settle conclusions, and the former club will have ta look to its laurels. However, there is one important factor that in the first game it is customary to give a trial to new blood. The Ammanford club will have to alter its tactics in the forward inasmuch that there ie vast room for improvement. Of the several supposed1 promising players, only one cilu justice to the popular pastime, and deserves first consideration with the selection of the committee. But as I have previously coa- tended, the season is young, and ere long a change of opinion may predominate. Abbot "Bach" did not do at all bad, and can be relied upon to do justice to the goodwill of the club. Indeed, despite the fact that he is an "old bad," or rather an "old stager," his play is as cautious and keen as ever. The three-quarter line is evenly balanced, and for the moment I cannot suggest any alteration, but there is this to say, that should a pro- mising youaigster come forward a trial should be given him. As a matter of fact, at the present moment we are unaware of the talent available. Both the Rugby and the Soccer clubs have the best of supporters, and no doubt they will lack nothing. The fact that both clubs are working in harmony tends to a successful season. "Unity" is the factor of success, and with the right men in the right place, one and all concerned can go forward with confidence and renew the pre-war activity displayed in the Valley. Let me congratulate the Brynamman club on their excellent stand, and more so, when cognÏzi the fact that their first game was played on a strange ground. What promises to prove a "crack" fifteen is the present selection of the Brynamman committee. The team is in its infancy, and deserves every support from the followers of this well known pastime at the place. There is one matter that I dread in con- nection with the furtherance of local teams, and that is the presence of touts from the first class clubs. In the past, at Ammanford, we have suffered much as the result of these, maybe, very informal visits. The committees will, I dare say, recognize this comment from a friendly standpoint, and do all within their power to abate a practice unfortunately and detrimentally prevalent. I am in no way suggestive, and would have it clearly under. stood that it is not my intention to prejudice the mind of any personal benefits. From what I gather, the Soccer club lost at least a £ 10 gate through the failure of Gors- einon to turn up on Saturday last. The attitude of the latter club was not sports- manlike. They might have at least sent word to announce their fa;lure to make the journey. The Ammanford committee is in no way responsible. In a conversation with Tommy Twist, the Ammanford captain, on Monday evening last, I was given to understand that it was the Gorseinon club who were desirious of playing a "friendly" at Ammanford. Twist and a few others were at Swansea watching a recent game with the Swans when they were approached by the officials of the Gorseinon club with the intention of arranging the fixture. Everything was settled, so I gather, amicably, and the result-well, I should not like to give vent to my feelings. On Saturday next the Soccerites will oppose Swansea Amateurs, and this will be the first of the League matches. I hear that a strong and representative side is to be chosen, and a bold attempt to be made for premier honours. The future of the Soccer code in the Valley practicaly depends on the activities of the Ammanford club; so look to it, boys. The Rugbyites visit Pootudulais. Here again a strong side has been chosen, and I trust the result will be more satisfactory. I shall hope to be able to give a fair aid descriptive result of the play and player; _i our next issue. Personally, I should be glad ot the opportunity. A good deal of interest has been taken by local followers in the proposed game, Am- manford versus Gamant. Although rather late for cricket, the fact that both sides have won an equal number of games, it justifies final conclusions. However, on Tuesday, I heard that it was declared off. For why, I cannot understand, but there, we must bid adieu, and cry quits. The Llandovery Rugby club has proved itself beyond "fortunate." Practically all the outfit is to be provided gratis, and the pick of the old school have consented to turn out. A trial game is to be played on Saturday next, and on the following Saturday Gorseinan will journey thither. Perhaps the Llandovery secretary -will send me on a list of fixtures. Although I should like to comment, per- haps rather freely, upon the activities of the Amman United, Rugby Club, I would prefer to leave matters in the hands of my colleague "Old Sport," who will, no doubt, prove himself equal to the calling. His comments in the past upon all sporting matters have aroused considerable interest in die respective sporting circles. It is my intention to popularize this column as much as possible, and to further the interest of both Rugby and Soccer. I shall be pleased toreceive reports Oil play and players for insertion. The Garnant United A.F.C. opened their season's League fixtures on Saturday last. Their opponents being Neath United, who played a surprisingly good game, defeating Gamant by 6-0. The local lads were in anything like good form. It was only at the eleventh hour the club secured a playing field, and no effort had to be spared to ensure a good game. The home players had worked exceedingly hard to put the field in order for Saturday's game, and after due consideration, no other result could be expected of them. The promoters favoured the brilliant stand made in the opening effort, and hope that as the season advances, to see the club in a good position, both from the League standpoint and financially.
