I CROP ROTATIONS.
CROP ROTATIONS. HOW A BETTER SYSTEM WOULD IMPROVE THE FARMERS LOT. 1,1 By E. T. BROWN. In view of the large population in Great Britain and the total area of ground available for cropping, it is impossible for us as a nation to be en- tirely self-supporting as regards food production. But though this be true, the fact remains that farmers do not make the best possible use of the land at their disposal. Economy in land is a practice wlhich is but seldom met, and yet, were we to be more thorough in our system of cultivation, it would go a very long way towards enormously increasing the quantity of home pro- duced foods. The area of agricultural land per head of the population is very small indeed, and therefore it is the duty of those concerned in farming to obtain the last ounce of food every square yard in their occupation. Land is the raw material in the gNNj^ duct-ion of food. Any waste, thè fore, reacts directly on the feeding 81 the nation. Extravagance in land is noticeable in two directions. In the first place, a large total area of ground does not produce any crop at all as in the case of some headlands, odd corners as found on every farm, and the land devoted to hedgerows, to say nothing of the tens of thousands of acres of reoladmable land which exist up and down the country. In the second place, the rotation of crops grown is wasteful in the extreme. By adopting another rotation, or series of crops to follow each other, it is possible to miake each acre yield at least twice as much as it does at present. The ma- jority of farmers are invariably diffi- dent as regards the introduction of new methods, but, taking into con- sideration the world-wide shortage of food and the ever-increasing demand on the part of the industrial popula- tion, they should be encouraged so to change their methods that gter crops may result. ONE YEAR WASTED IN FIVE. A very common rotation of crops is as follows:—1st year, lea corn; 2nd year, roots or potatoes; 3rd year, spring corn with grass seed; 4th and 5th years, grass. The total area of arable land is generally divided into five parts, and therefore a section of the land is annually laid down to each crop. Such a rotation is extravagant. During the period of the full five years' course, upwards of twelve months are absolutely wasted, in that the 'land is lying idle., This occurs between the lea corn aa>d the roots or potatoes and the sprimg corn with grass seed. e v A much more business-like rotation has recently been suggested by Prof. Wibberley, of Queen's University, Bel- fast, and its adoption does way alto- gether with the loss of the twelve months' idleness of the land, while an additional yield of feeding stuffs per acre is secured. The rotation under discussion also covers a period of five years, and the farm is again divided into five sections. The order of the crops grown is :—1st year, oats and vetdhes for green soiling; 2nd year, oats and vetches for hay; 3rd year, potatoes and roots; 4th year, corn and seeds; and 5th year, seeds for soiling. The first year tihe lea is ploughed in autumn and sowia with oats and vetches. From the middle of May this crop is grazed off, and the second growth is cut green. This supplies food until October. If disc harrows are available, the land is then har- rowed and resovrn with oats and vetches. If a disc harrow is not avail- able, a plough can be used. By the next June the crop is cut for hay, and a", soon as it has been carted off the land, the ground is divided into three parts. Giant rape is sown on one part; hardy greens on another; while the third is devoted to giant rye and rape. These three crops together sup- ply food throughout the winter. The rape crop if cut in October and the land dressed with liquid manure or nitrate of soda, will yield a further supply by the following March, which can either be fed off with ewes and Iambs or ploughed in as a green manuAfc The giant rape is followed by pOTatoes; the hardy greens by mangels; and the rape and rye by turnips. An application of a ton of ground burnt lime to the acre is ad- visable before planting out the potato tubers and sowing the root crops. The potatoes and mangels are lifted in sufficient time to allow winter oats or winter barley with seeds to be ':lwn. The turnips are followed by' spring oats or barley and seeds. The speds are cut at least three times and fed on the pasture land. ADVANTAGES FROM NEW SYSTEM! The principal advantages of this rotation are :—1, morq stock can be maintained per acre. Forty acres of arable land. supplemented by 10 acres of pasture, will produce sufficient food for 50 cows—or the equivalent in sheep and pigs. The necessary cake and meal will not cost more than the value of the early potato crop. 2, no more labour is required, although the yield is more than doubled, since the labour is better distributed and the greater part of the cultivation is done in the summer and autumn. 3, more stock is kept on the land, and therefore, less artificial ma n ure is re- quired. In addition the crops and stubbles ploughed in contain plant food. 4, the most expensive plant food is nitrogen; by the arrangement of cropping as outlined above, a large amount of this material is stored up in the soil during the first year, for th. uae of the foMowing oyops. i
