ITHE OBSTACLE TO HIGHER PRODUCTION.
I THE OBSTACLE TO HIGHER PRODUCTION. I A CANADIAN POINT OF VIEW. .Hy U. SALTER, European Traffic MaQjager, Grand Trunk RaUway. The cry to-day is for higher pro- duction. What is the main obstacle that is standing in the way of it? As a Canadian of long business ex- perience on both sides of the Atlan- tic, it seems to me that in order to answer this question, J muat nrst pile up our own faults, and then stand- ing upon them, from that height, I may be a.bie to put my finger on some of the obstacles that seem to mv Canadian eyes to be retarding higher production here in this country. On- lookers, it is said, see most of the game, and it is as an onlooker deeply interested in the welfare of this country, th&t I venture to give an opinion. I THE SOCIAL BARRIER. I believe tha.t one great obstacle preventing greater production by the workmg-pcople in Gr&at pritain is to be found' in the stone walls that di- vide the classes in this country, walls built up by your class system, by the Church, and by class prejudice. The result .of these barriers is that p,,c,p,le do not know one another, and bitter feelings are engendered be- tween classes through ignorance of each other's needs and aspirations. Old social traditions form a system delightful for the few, but nM up- lifting or helpful to the many in the work of the nation. The human touch is lacking. It is the human touch that bridges over classes, that creates sympathy between administrator and worker, and that induces a co-opera- tion resulting in greater production. Where there is less class distinction as in Canada and the United States, there is more 'co-o'pera.tion and lees of what is called labour trouble. In North America labour troubles arise mostly among workers other than those jiative born citizens who have had their training in the schools of the x?oun)try and have absorbed the social ideas of the country, which re- and from environment and do not arise from tradition. According to the way in which men are taught to think, they wiU act.. In my opindon unproved production in this country will only be effectively brought about when the minds of the working-people are brighbe'ned by hope and opportunity, in a word, when work ceases to be mere drudg- ery. You canmot raise the condition of the workera by charity or by State dotes. These merely pauperise and degrade the recipients. THE GREATEST FACTOR. When the leaders of the nation r€'alise that there is a yet more au- gust thing, vealed though it be, than precedent, tradition, or symbols and ritual of State, Church, or Society, namely, our cofnseLen'ce, by which the Almighty opens our minds to a sense of truth, justice, and mercy, then we may hope thai legislation will be en'eeted on broader linea. Then the people will sing with heart and voices "Our Father, God to Thee, Author of Liberty; To Thee we sing. Long may our lands be bright. With Freedfom'a holy light, Protect us by Thy might Great God—o'ur King." This is the spirit that will Uft the people into high national patriotism, and will heLp to remove the aoured mind which intakes the masses regard the otaasea with hatred, and wludh in- duces bad wofk and slackness. This spu-it will give people the motive power o<f loyalty to hame a.nd coun- try in time of peace as in time of nation al peril-the loyalty which is so essential to unity in productive in- dustrial activity.
Hedging-Not Batting.
Hedging-Not Batting. At LIandovery Police Court, oo Fndty, William Jones and David Jones, fathef and son, Glangwedderig Farm, Llandovery, wete summoned for being In possession of t Mtk containing salmon roe. B&IUS Waiters, of the CAnnaithem Bay Fishing Board, said he watched the defen- dants for half an hour; one of them was attempting to gaff a salmon at the wem, and upon his approach ran away and secreted something in a hedge near by. Witness searched and found a long stick, which be said had been used as a gaff, and a &ack. The sack contained salmon roe. Mr. T. R, Ludford. Uanelly, was for the defence, which was that the farmers were hedging, and the bailiff mistook their move- ments for gaffing a fish. They denied know- ledge of the sack, its contents, and the stick. The Bench considered that there ware grave doubts In the case, and dismissed both summonses.
