Weekly Film Notes.
Weekly Film Notes. Harry Houdini, the famous self- liberator," well known on the British music-hall stage, has signed a long- term contract with the Famous Players- Lasky Corporation. He has left New York-where he has been living lately —for the Califomian studio for the purpose of taking the leading part in some pictures specially designed to exhibit his remarkable aptitude for escaping from handcuffs and straight- jackets. He was arrested as soon as he left the train at Los Angeles, handcuffed, gagged and bound, and deposited in the strongest jail in the city. His efforts to escape were photographed by an alert camera man, whose intention is to find out how Houdini really does it." The day chosen it so happened to be the day after the commission of bomb outrages by the I.W.W. in various cities, and the chief's office was the busiest place in New York. The artist sat in the ante-room patiently awaiting admittance while detectives and reporters rushed in and out. It began to appear certain that he was not going to get in, so with pad and pencil concealed under his hat he sketched a part of the room each time the door was opened, changing his seat as the progress of his drawing required. One comer of the room, facing a window, he could not see, but his ingenuity did not fail him. Taking a line on the building across the street, he saw that be could finish his sketch from a win- dow there, and gaining access there he :ompleted his task. When the chief )f detectives saw his office reproduced n complete detail on the screen, he probably wondered how it was done. But all the good detectives aren't em- ployed on the force. Sydney Chaplin's first screen produc- ion under his new contract with Famous 3l ayers- Lasky Corporation, which is low being filmed in California, will be mtitled One Hundred Million." A lovel feature of production has been niroduced by Mr. Chaplin. Aero- )Iane transportation as a means of apid tranasit to distant location has .cen originated by Mr. Chaplin. This las proved to be a great time-saver. ^r. Chaplin, in addition to his roles .f star, director and producer, has lossomed into a new field, this being le first production from his pen. The Drury Lane drama of The threat Day is one of the plays to be screened next May by the Famous- Lasky British Producers in their new London studio. The purchase was made from Arthur Collins, who, in- cluding The Great Day," has pro- duced all of the last twenty-three dramas presented at the Drury Lane. The production will remain at that theatre until next Easter, when it will begin its tour of the Provinces. By the terms of the purchase the British obtains the right to use as much of the original scenery, properties and costumes of the stage productions as may be adaptable for the screen version. Mr. Collins has also offered to assist the company in every possible way in the adaptation and in the supervision of the screen version. From Grand Opera to moving pic- tures seems a far cry, but up to the present at least three of the greatest operatic singers have fallen under the spell of the silent screen. Perhaps the most notable example is Caruso, who was at first very averse from appearing in pictures, and peremptorily refused several offers. Eventually he was won over, and signed a contract to appear in two Artcraft pictures, one of which. My Cousin," is now showing in the principal picture theatres. The case of Geraldine Farrar, how- ever, stands out with even greater pro- „ minence. She is a native of Boston, and her father was a professional base- fl baU player. She made her first debut 9 in Paris, and so great was her subse- quent success in Europe that it was several years before she returned to America, to appear ai the Metropolitan J Opera House in New York. Her :alent as an actress is at least equal to :hat as a singer, and if she had not j previously achieved fame as an operatic irtiste, she would have easily leaped nlo popularity as a screen star. Among ler pictures which have been seen in his country are Carmen," which is o be followed by The Woman God > -got, "The De-iil Stcne." "Maria ? osa," and Temptation." Lina -avaheri, the great Italian singer, is he third of the operatic stars to appear <> n pictures. Her picture, The Two j 3rides, has just recently been eleased
