RHYMNEY. COUNTY COUNCIL VACANCY.—Mr John Edwards, J.P. having been ap- pointed a County Alderman, a vacan- cy has occurred in the Lower Rhym- ney Ward. A meeting will be held at the Lower Mixed School, on Tues- day next, at 7.30 p.m., to select a candidate for submission to the County Council. FIRE BRIGADE'S PROMPTNESS.— The members of the Rhymney section of the Urban Council's Fire Brigade accomplished a very smart feat on Thursday. Within three-quarters of an hour from the receipt of the tele- phone message by Captain W. Lloyd Marks, apprising him of the serious fire at Now Tredegar the captain, accompanied by Lieut. Tom Jenkins1 ¡ and ten mem bers of the Brigade, were at the scene of the outbreak, with the necessary appliances. It is a most praiseworthy achievement. < OBITUARY.—It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of Miss Annie Saunders, sister of our I respected townsman, Mr Thomas Saunders, accountant, who passed away in a painfully sudden manner at her home, 1, Tanyllan Terrace, on ¡' Friday last The deceased, who was well-known and much respected, had been a faithful worker and Sunday II School teacher at St. Matthew's Church for many years. The funeral, which wa;s private, took place on I Tuesday afternoon at Bedwellty Churchyard. I i XOLL OF THE WAR—We learn thp.t Mr and Mrs David Morgan, 9, I Wellington-street, Rhymuey, have been officially notified of the death at Salonika on the 12th May of their only son, Private David Morgan, South Wales Borderers. He left his I employment at Abertysswg Colliery at the outbreak of war, and took part in the first landing at the Dardanelles He was wout^ied in August, 1915, aud itivilide(I to this country suffer- ing 'from gunshot wounds in the elbow. He was aftei yards despatched to Salonika, where he was wounded on the 8th May last, succumbing to his wounds a few days later. He was 24 years of age, and was well known. among local miners. » ANNIVERSARY.— suaduy last was an eventful day in connection with the Sunday-school at Bealah English Bap- tist Church, when the anniversary services were held. The Rev. T. M. Richards, the respected pastor, presi- ded. An interesting programme of solos, recitations, and dialogues was gone through by the scholars, who acquitted themselves in a praise- worthy manner. The choir, under the able conductorship of Mr D. T. Will- hams, AO., also rendered popular marches and choruseis. Large cos- gregations assembled, and the services were introduced in the morning; by Mr Edward Thomas; afternoon by Mr William Lewis, and evening by Mr Walter Hall. Miss Brenda Gale pre- sided at the harmonium in an efficient mauiaer. It should be added that in the evening Miss Harries, Pontlottyn. an elocutionist of exceptioijal ability, contributed a recitation very effec- tively, and Miss Irene Jones gave a beautiful rendering of the solo, 'Even- tide." The Superintendent (Mr Wil- iams) expressed his ,thanks to all who Lad assisted during the day, and ac- knowledged the valued help he had received from Miss R Williams, in the preparation of the recitations, also I eulogising the work of the Secretary (Mr W. J. Durham), aud the other faithful officers.

He added that an infan- tile eentrg had recently been opened at the Middle Rhymney School, and he considered that it was an oppor- tune time for assisting this commend- able movement by arranging for an exhibition in conjunction with the proposed open-air concert. 5HOOTINQ SENSATION AT CAERPHILLY. An echo of a Sunday evening sensation at the Caerphilly Park, was heard at the local court on Tuesday morning, when Horace Jackson, 19, a collier of Ludlow Street, Caerphilly, was brought up on remand, charged with causing grevious bodily harm to Sarah Ann Lewis, 20, of Iron Bridge Road, Tongwynlais, by shooting her in the arm with a revolver. Superintendent T. Williams asked for a remand for a week, and prisoner offering no objection, the case was j accordingly adjourned. Prisoner was admitted to bail himself- in the sum of iC25 and one surety of £25. It appeared .that Miss Lewis was on a. visit to some friends at Caer- philly und in the evening went for a walk in the park, where they met the accused, who, it is alleged was an en- tire stranger to them and he pulled I' out a revolver and shot her, in the arm. She was attended to by Dr. McKenzie, and Jackson arrested by J Police Inspector Hale. — j**t1 I

HUGE FIRE AT NEW "UPE? FIRIS' -AT NEW I Damage to the extent of consider- ably over £ 1,000 was caused to the stock and premises of Mr Isaac Pruss, pawnbroker, jeweller, &c., of New Tredegar, on Thursday afternoon by i a huge fire, which broke out in the I upper rooms of the extensive premises. It appears that Mr Prnss had been from home for several days the busi- I ness howev er was carried o? us usual. Oa Thursday, th? shop w:? locked up for the half holiday, and the whole [ Of the assistants left the district. Shortly after the outbreak was dis- covered. The Police, under Inspector Humphries, were at once on the spot, as also was the New Tieiegar Fire Brigade in charge of Capt. Wiseman, together with the Blackwood, Rhym- ney, and Aberbargoed Brigades. By their combined efforts, the adjoining premises were saved, but the upper storeyc of Mr Pruss's shop was burnt out, and much damoge done by water to the ground floors.

RHYMNEY VALLEY EVANGELISTIC CAMPAIGN. In cenneotion with the above- named campaign, conducted by the Baptist Ministers of the Rhymney Valley, a sixteen days' mission was concluded in Bargoed on Sunday last. It appears that something like 150 eonversions have been registered directly through the Campaign. The houses have been systematically visited, personal invitations given and Tracts, Scripture-tests and Gospels distributed. The movement, which takes in the entire valley, has been of a voluntary and spontaneous character, on the part of our ministerial friends, who have co-operated therein, and has merited the fullest sympathy and en- couragement of all well-wishers of evangelical religion. The ultimate fruit of this spiritual enterprise will never be tabulated, It has been going on since the beginning of the year, and the ground is not likely to be covered much before the year has run its course. It is to be hoped the seed sown will culminate in much blessing, and that the indifferent and self-centered public, will, in reflection, turn their serious attention to these higher things which have to do with them, and give to. God His rightful place in their thoughts and life and interests.

GELLIQAER TRIBUNAL AND THH ONE M AN BUSINESS. AUTHORITIES FINAL DICTUM. At a meeting of the Gelligaer tribunal at Hengoed on Thursday, Mr Ben Hnghes in the chair, Mr Rowland Thomas, the military representative, made reference to the one man bus;- ness applicants which had come before the tribunal at the previous meeting. He reminded the members that on that oeoasion the advisory committee had asked the tribunal to withhold all such oases until definite instructions had. been reoeived, following upon the decision in a high court appeal case, but the tribunal decided otherwise. Since then he had submitted the case to Captain Beauchanan, Cardiff, who, in his reply, stated that he was afraid that the snnouncement, whi h had appeared in the newspapers under this heading: had caused a great deal of trouble. Each case must be taken separately, and upon its own merits, and the applicants mast prove the following :—(I) that serious hardship would arise; (2) that he is the sole proprietor of the b'rimi1esa (H) that he is the support, of a family, who exclusively depend upon the businesi (4) that it would be a serious matter fop jiimio make arrangements tocarrv on the. business in. his absence. No Instructions, added Capt. Baauchanan, had reached his office to vary those regulations which had prevailed hither- to. The tribunal acted qiiite right in proceeding as they had always done, and not as reoommendf-d by the ad- ta,t they should continue to carry out their work iu the original" way.-This, said Mr I Thomas, shewed that there -could be no miaunderstanding u pon the ques- tion. Chairman: So the tribunal was quite in order in doing what they had done. Mr Thomas: That is so. The impression has gone abroad that the one mau business is exempted, but this is not so.

The residents of Aberbargoed, when they take up anything, invariably do it thoroughly, and this fact has been well demonstrated by the brilliant achievement in the endowment of two beds at the Welsh Hospital, Netley, apart from other philantropio efforts which have been made. It is there- fore safe to anticpiate that the attrac- tions on Bmk Holiday will be of such a varied character as to command the support of the whob community. I THE WORKE *RS'EDUCA- I TIONAL MOVEMENT. In the work of reconstruction in South Wales that is necessitated by the problems of the coalfield, if they are to be solved, education will be one of the most potent factorsv -No in- dividuals have realised this more than those who are linked together in that excellent organisation, the Workers Educational Association. Their work to a similar end has been of incalcul- able good in various parts of the country. What it can do for this locality will be shown at the South Wales Conference on Educational Reconstruction, to be held in Cardiff on July 7th. Interesting as many of the confer- ences which have recently taken I place in Cardiff have been, this one is likely to equal, if not surpass them. Delegates representative of labour and educational associations of all kinds will he addressed by speakers, whose ability in their own domain has received ready recognition in all parts of the kingdom. To-day, the opportunity is given for educational reforms which will ameliorate the lot of the worker. If this is not to be missed, public opinion must not only be aroused but expressed. Such a conferenee as this should materially assist in this beneficent object.

  — e — 0 ———— BARGOED YOUNG MAN IN THE HOSPITAL. Private W. Harri Williams, who for four years was assistant with Mr J. M. Edwards, the gent's Out- fitter, Hanbury Road, Bargoed, and who is well known fn the district generally, is now at the Northern General Hospital, suffering from wounds. Mr Williams enlisted at the outbreak of war in the 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards and transferred into the Welsh Regiment for Active Service. He L, --s been in France two years, and was in the engagements at Loos and Festurbert in September, 1915, all through the Somme offensive and was wounded by shrapnel on Thursday June 7th, on Messine Ridge. He is now at Leicester pro- gressing, favouralbly. >

BARGOED VAN-DWELLERS HEAVILY FINED At the Bargoed court on Friday, Wm Smith, 36, Reginald Goode, 56, and John Helps, 56, three occupiers of van dwellings in Bargoed, were fined 2s. 6d. per day from the 18th of January to the 14th June, for continuing to occupy vans as dwell- ings contrary to an, order made against them in November last, when the Gelligaer Council proceeded against them for occupying these in contravention of the Bye Laws. The rate of penalty to continue for each successive day .of occupancy.—?  A full report will appear next week

A COSTLY CIGARETTEEdward Morris, a fourteen-year-old collier boy, of Nantybwch, was summoned at Tredegar, on Monday, for being in possession of a cigarette at the Bed- wellty Colliery. Mr R. H. Sponcer, Tredegar, who prosecuted for: the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, said the danger with n boy having a cigarette underground was quite as great as if a man had it.
