I RHYMNEY IRON COMPANY, LIMITED.
I RHYMNEY IRON COMPANY, LIMITED. The annual general meeting of the Rhymney Iron Company, Limited, was held on Wednesday in last week at the Cannon-street Hotel, London, Mr John Varley presiding. In mov. ing the adoption of the report and balanoe-sLeet, the Chairman said that on Wednesday last, more than six months after the promulgation of the Government Coal Control Order, he, as chairman of the company, was officially but confidentially informed what were the proposed terms of con- trol. One effect of the oontrol had now made itself manifeot. They had to make very elaborate returns to the Controller of Coal Mines of every detail of the business. Eaoh return seemed to whet the appetite or stimu- late the thirst for further information, entailing additional work on the al- reldy over-worked and sadly depleted staff. They had endeavoored to meet the strain in some degree by re- arranging duties. Mr Saunders, who had filled the position of secretary for so many years, placed himself most unreservedly in the hands of the board, and eventually they decided that the best interests of the company would be served if he devoted himself entirely to the commercial side of the business at Cardiff, relinquishing the office- of secretary. Mr Wright, who had acted as assistant secretary, was the obvious sucoessor to the vacanoy. Taking the liabilities side of the balance-sheet, the Chairman said the ahare capital remained the same, bnt the Debenture obligations had been severally reduced by 94,000 and £ 5,360— £ 9,360 in all. The general reserve fund was increased by 910,000 and the Preference dividend eqoaliea- tion aocoant by, r?galy, ?3,90? Taming to the &wow side, the MOQ Tarn!y intereat was the increase Tn i6om resources from £ 39,560 to £ f06.5S?. from X.39,.560 to Binoe the close of the financial year they had completed, after long negotia- tion, the purchase of the surface and minerals adjoining their freehold pro- perty, and which they had held and worked under a low. The matter having been completed since the end of the year, nothing appeared in the aceeunts relating thereto, and the mode of dealing with the purchase cost would be earefnlly considered by the board before the next accounts were [issued. Dealing with the appropriation of available profit, the Chairman said that after payment of the interim dividends there remained a balance of £ 125,490. The board recommended that A30,000 be carried to general reserve account, that Z)0,000 be provided for depreciation of invest- ments, that a final dividend at the rate pf 6 per cent. per annum be paid on all classes of shares, absorbing 980,000 leaving a Jium of A55,490 to provide fer exoeM proSiw duty and the oontri- ?'bu?ion to ptrhofi o Preferenee dividend equalisation fund, with a balance to I carry forward to the current year,! suVject always to any adjustment that the terms of control might entail. The Hon. Trevor Lewis eeoended, and Mr F. J. Varley congratulated the board of management on a suc- cessful year. The motion was carried. Tho retiring directors were re- elected. The Chairman said he thought the war would end as suddenly as it had began, and that the Rhymney Com- pany would renew its youth when they got back to normal times.

I THE RHYXNBf VALLEY [ SEWEBAG1 BOABD. The monthly meeting of the above Board was held at the Council Offices, New Tredegar, on Wedneeday even* ing, Councillor John Bvans, M.E., presiding. There were also preeent: Couneillors W. S. Nash, J.P., Wm. Griffiths (Rhymney), Griffith Morgan (Bedwas), Edmund Jones, J.P., Dd. Hopkins, W. Hammonds, Joseph Mor- gan, Gus Jonee, John Edwards (Gelli- per), Edpr D?viM. J.P., Md J. gMr), (B?weHty), R. P. M?ya Md Thomas Evans (Caerphilly), Mr T. J. Thomas (olerk), Mr F. G. Harries (deputy olerk) and Mr J. F. Japp (consulting engineer). The Engineers, reporting npon Con- tract No. 3, stated that favourable weather had been experienoed, and the average number of men employed was 45. Owing to the 000arrenoo of a considerable thieknees of hard rock, the rate of progress had beta Blower than formerly. Gangs were working between the river crossing near the footbridge at Fleur-do-lip, on two ■hert lengths of tunnel, the frit and JI longer of which had already been com- pleted. Works to the value of about 32 per cent. of the contract had now been executed in about 00 per oent. of the contract time (21 years). The Contractors having applied for a further payment on account, they enclosed a certificate for 2580 due to them.—A cheque for this amount was passed by the Finance Committee. I Letter was read from Messrs. Will- cox and Raikes, engineers, stating -that they had made an inspection of Contract No. 3 in conjunction with the Chairman of the Board on the 7th inst., and bad discussed the oir- emmstanoes under which the work was being carried on. They understood that the chairman (Mr T. Edwardt) would refer to the matter at the next meeting. They would be glad to know whether anything had transpired in the meantime, and to have the opinion of the Board as to whether the con- tinuation of the work on this contract may be considered as disregarding the iustrnctions of the Ministry of Muni- tions. —In a discussion which followed it was suggested that the object of the engineers was to put responsibility on the Board regarding the etoppage of the work, and that the Board, there- fore, should act with circumspection. —It was pointed out that the Chair- man had refused to commit himself, and, of course, incidentally, the Board, that all he had promised the engineer was to refer to the matter at that meeting—Coun. D. Hopkins: I admire the chairman.—The Clerk He is not very easily drawn, I can tell you. Mr Thomas added that they had long since deoided that it was the contractor who was the person liable to the Min- istry of Munitionti.-Resolved that the engineers' letter lie on the table. ii !8! ■
MONMOUTHIHIBE THIBUIqAL I
MONMOUTHIHIBE THIBUIqAL I At Monmoathehire Appeal Tribunal which met at Newport on Monday, Sir H. Mather Jackson presiding, Captain Williams (military represent*- live) asked for a ruling as to the right of appeal in eases which arose out of the action of the Pontypool and Aber- syohan Tribunals in refusing to hear any cam of married men as a protest against the Government's "insaction with regard to nnrecrnited single men. The Central Tribunal had laid it down that an adjourned ease was appealable, and the point at issue now was whether the action of the tribnnals named amounted to an adjournment. This procedure bad been followed by the Pontypool Tribunal on three ooeasions, and some hundreds of cam were being held up in the connty. The Chairasan: We hold that the action amounts to an adjournment, and is therefore appealable. It was decided that the Newport Corporation mast release either Mr Tremelling, the borough engineer, or Mr Ward, the borough arehiteot, at the end of August. I The Chairman, in reply to Mr John Mexon, said that the Tribunal would net look at medical certificates unices sueh certificates had been produced to the medical hoard when the examina- tion took place. Mr Mozon said that in the past the medical board had deelined to look at medioal oertifleates. The Chairman said they did so now, M he thought they should. If the tribunal had evidence that the medi- cal board ignored them then the caee would be judged accordingly. ——.— ————
