DEATH -OF THE REV. DAVID -DAVIES,…
DEATH OF THE REV. DAVID DAVIES, B.A., RHYMNEY. POPULAR VICAR PASSES AWAY. It is with deep regret that we have to announce the death of the Rev. D. Davies, B.A., the respected vicar of Rhymney, which sad event took place on Monday afternoon at the Cottage I Hospital, after a comparatively short illness, in the 54th year of his age. The suddenness of the event will be nealised when it is stated that deceased occupied the pulpit quite recently, and his last discourse to his parish- ioners was oharaoterised by much earnestness and power from that familiar text, c. To me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." He con- i tinued to be active, and appeared as genial as ever. However, a few days later Mr Davies complained of being unwell, and Dr. R. V. Redwood, his medical attendant, on the 28th ultimo advised his removal to the Hospital, j where a rather critical operation was found necessary. The patient re- mained in a weak condition, and in spite of the unremitting attention of his daughter, and the members of the hospital staff, and what the best medical skill could accomplish, the end came peacefully, as stated above, on Monday last. The news of his demise has occasioned profound IOr- row in the town, where the rev. gentleman was much esteemed, not only by churcbpeople, but by .almost every section of the community. The Rev. David Davies, who was an eloquent preacher, was trained at St. David's College, Lampeter, where be took his B.A. degree in 1885. His first curacy was at Mardy in the Rhondda-fach, in 1886, and he subse- quently held the curacy of Skewen, Neath, but later returned to Tylors- town, a few miles from his first church. When Mardy and Ferndale were made separate ecelosipstical parishes, Mr Daviea was appointed Vicar of Fern- dale by the late Bishop of Llandaff in 1900. During his ministry in that populous district, largely through his organising efforts, the debt of the Welsh Church at Mardy was cleared off. An energetic worker, he recog- nised the needs of the Welsh-speaking population for a Welsh Church, and under his supervision a scheme was promoted, the outcome of which was that a fine ed ifioe was erected at a cost of 92400, which building was duly consecrated by the present Bishop soon after taking offico. Upon the preferment of the Rev. Daniel Fisher, Ehymney, as Vicar of All Saints, Cardiff, in 1908, the late Mr Davies, on the recommendation of the Bishop was appointed as successor, and for the last nine years he has laboured conscientiously, and with much energy. During this period gratifying progress has been made. A Parish Hall has been erected and opened in High-street, which building has proved a great boon for the holding of the various gatherings in connec- tion with the three churches, as well as for other social functions, in the town. The deseased gentleman by his affable manner was beloved by all who had the pleasure of his acqnaint- anoe, and in his demise a very familiar figure has been removed. Mr Davies leaves a daughter and two sons to mourn his loss, with whom general sympathy will be expressed in their bereavement. ummmisi —————————

5PRAYINQ POTATOES IN QELLIQAER. COUNCIL'S ACTION. The Public Works Committee of the Gelligaer Council reported to that authority on Tuesday, that they had considered the circular letter of the Board of Agriculture setting forth the advantages to be gained by the spray- ing of potatoes, and recommended the purchasing of three spraying machines with the necessary material. Several of the members raised the point whether three machines would be sufficient for the work over BochA large area and the number of plots which were available.—Mr Ben Hughes thought three would not meet the demands.—The surveyor, Mr T. R. Gabe, said there was a difference of opinion amongst the allottees as to the effieacy of spraying to ward off disease* He did not know how many would go in for the spraying.—Mr D. Hopkins thought that if the greuud was now immune to disease, it was full time something should be done, as otherwise, the damage would make itself felt next year.-It was pointed out that the Glamorgan County Coun. oil had made arrangements to lend 1 the spraying machines free of charge, the council to purchase the barrel and solution.—Mr Sam Carter said the Gilfach Allotment Association had decided to have one machine.—Mr E. Richards moved that the council apply to the county authorities for six machines.-Mr S. Jones moved that they purohase three, which he thought would meet the demands.—On a vote Mr Richards' motion was carried by eight to six.
