RHYMNEY DISTRICT COUNCIL-…
RHYMNEY DISTRICT COUNCIL- .i The ordinary meeting of the-i members of the Rhymney Urban i Council was held at the Council j Offices on Wednesday, at which f there were present:—-Messrs. D. James, J.P. (chairman), W. Griffiths, Phil Lewis, T. R. Jones, J.P., John Evans. Rees Harris, J.P., AV. T. Hopkin, W. C. Williams, Sam. Lewis, Ben. Probert, with Mr. W. H. Trump (clerk), Dr. R. V. de Acton Red wood (medical officer), j Mr. W. Lloyd Marks (surveyor), Mr. Ben. Jones, J. P. (collector). The members who attended the conference at Newport in connec- tion with the formation of a Wages Board for the urban districts in the industrial areas of the county, pre- sented their report.—It was pointed out that the establishing of such a Board would take from the Council their control of the wages, and on the motion of Mr. W. Griffiths, it was decided to withdraw from the scheme. The Surveyor reminded the Council that an application for an increase in wages from the Council's employees had been in hand since April last. He said that at the conference (referred to above) it was suggested that the Abertillery rate should be the basis. The war bonus in that area was equal to 30 per cent. upon the standard wage.— Mr. Rees Harris moved that an advance of 10 per cent., be granted as from April 30th. making a total of 20 per cent. war bonus.—In answer to Mr. P. Lewis, Mr. Harris • •- said the rule in the bertil11¡ district were 'much higher than at Rhymnev. —Mr. Lewis questioned whether the ages of the respective! groups of men were somewhat the same. There were on the Rhymney" | list men who would not be employed j by anyone else.—Mr. W. Griffiths seconded the motion, which was r carried. The Surveyor reported that the average consumption of water was 33.04 gallons per head per day.— Mr. J. Evans said this was very high. He did not think so high a figure would be found anywhere else.—The Surveyor agreed, but said the figure was due to the new service to Abertysswg. The work of searching for leakages was being proceeded with. The Surveyor having reported that posters dealing with the Food Control Order had been posted in the district, Mr. Phil Lewis said that in the Tredegar district posters I supplied by the War Committee had been put up, giving the prices t to be paid for a large number of commodities.—Mr. W. C. Williams emphasised the need of something of the kind in Rhymney. The pepple of the district, he said, were j being exploited in the charges, which were much -too high.-—Mr. j W. T. Hopkin If that is so, why have they not reported the ofiending tradesmen —Mr. W. C. Williams You know they are being charged i i more than the maximum prices, --I Mr. W. Griffiths: Who is to kuaw I !that ?-.Ili. W. C. Williams The j people read the prices in the Pre|s. ) -? i: f lr. B. Probert agreed with the i —Mr. B. Probert agreed with the Views expressed by Mr. Williams, and although people made these complaints they could not get any- one to make it in writing for investi- gation. The Order provided that the Council should appoint one of their officers to investigate the prices charged for the stipulated commodities.—Mr. W. Griffiths That is so, but is it not a matter for the police ?»—Mr, W. T. Hopkin said that so far as the Rhymney j Grocers' Association members were concerned, the prices fixed by Government were posted up in their shops, and these were the only rates charged. He could not speak for those outside the Association.— The Surveyor said that if anyone woulct give him private information as to excessive charges, he would investigate the matter.—Mr. W. Griffiths said he was satisfied that Lord Rhondda was going to enforce new regulations controlling the food prices.—On the motion of Mr. John Evans, the matter was deterred to the next meeting. ———.—
