I RHYMNEY. A CALL."—Mount Carmel Con- gregational Chapel have unanimously decided to give "a call to the Rev. D. Overton, Dinas, Rhondda. DEATH AT SEA.— We learn that Mrs T. B. Lewis, 9, Manest-street, has received information from the authorities of the death of her brother, John Henry Curtis, on board one of H.M., battleships. Deceased, who was the youngest son of the late Mr William Curtis, was discharged some time ago from the Army as medically unfit, and was subsequently accepted for the Navy. PREACHING SERVICES.—On Sun- day last, the pulpit of Mount Carmel Congregational Church was ably filled by the Rev. Gwilym Jenkins, M.A., Stockport, and formerly of Pontlottyn. Mr Jenkins earnest discourses, morning and evening, were much appreciated by excellent congrega- tions. IMPERIAL CINEMA.-In addition to the fine selection of pictures to be shown at the Imperial Cinema (High street) during the coming week, there is a special attraction," when the Ten Tomboys will appear in a miniature Revue, a melange of mirth and melody. The star film from Mon- day to Wednesday is Her Code of Honour," a powerful drama. COMING EISTEDDFOD.-We learn that the prospects for the forthcoming eisteddfod to be held at Jerusalem Chapel on Saturday, the 28th instant, are very encouraging. Much interest is being centred in the choral competition. Deep Jordan's Banks I treld" (Gabriel) in which quite half a dozen choirs, are expected to compete. There are numerous solo competitions. A meeting of Liberal electors of the South Division, Rhymney, on Wednes day evening was held to select a nominee'for submission to the Mon- mouthshire County Council to fill the seat vacant by the elevation of Coun- cillor John Edwards, J.P. te the '06 .,¡. J aldermanic bench. Councillor W. Griffiths presided. County Councillor Gorman, Llanhilleth, secretary of the Liberal section of the County Council, stated that owing to the party truce a Liberal must be nominated. It was unanimously resolved that the name of Councillor John Evans, colliery agent, Abertysswg, be sub- mitted to the County Council. C. E. ANNIVERSAHY. On Sunday last, the members of the Christian Endeavour Society in connection with Beulah English Baptist Church, cele- brated their anniversary. In the morning the Junior Society, con- ducted by Mr Meyall, provided a most interesting programme, consist- ing of solos, recitations, dialogues &c. The service opened with a reading of a suitable chapter by Master Arthur Arnold. The following took part:—■ Solo, Mr William John Morris; dialogue, Union Jack," Arthur Arnold, Sam Jones, Idris Bromage, Arthur Meyall and Sidney Morris solos, Sarah Jones, Sidney Morris, Miss May Dugan, Miss Annie Morgan, dialogue ;Sarah Jones and Sam Jones, recitations, Doris Bromage, S. Llew-. elyn. Miss Stevenson, of Abertysswg, also gave two recitations, which were most inspiring. Mrs Newall presided at the harmonium. In the afternoon the programme was supplied by the members of Poplar Road, (Congre- gational) Society Tredegar, conducted by Mr Smith, and Mr Humphreys was the accompanist. A large congregation assembled at the even- ing service, which was of a very hearty character, the singing of the specially selected hymns being quite inspiring. A fine programme was provided by the members of Castle Street Congregational Church Society Tredegar, conducted by Mr W. James and Miss Hopkins proved an efficient accompanist. The soloists were, Mr George Llewellyn, bass Miss Ethel Bryant soprano; Mr Ernest Griffiths, tenor duet, Messrs. Katie and Lily Powell, and Miss Ethel Jones con- tributed a recitation in excellent style. During the evening Mr D. J. Jones, Tredegar, who is a most acceptable speaker, delivered an appropriate address, which made a deep im- pression upon the congregation. Previous to the rendering of the clos- ing hymn, the Rev. T. M. Richards, who presided, expressed the warmest thanks of the Beulah Society to the Tredegar friends for their co-operation and valuable services, which had so largely contributed tq the success of the anniversary. TEMPERANCE.— Under the auspices of the Free Churches an united tem- perance meeting was held on Sunday evening last at Brynhyfryd C.M. Chapel, presided over by Mr Daniel Thomas. A stirring address was delivered by the Rev. R. E. Peregrine B.D., and during the evening Mr W. Carey gave a suitable recitati(!n, and Miss Ceridwen Price rendered a solo in fine style. The meeting closed with prayer by the Rev. T. E. Williams.

t PONTLOTTYN. At St. Tyfaelog Sehoolrooom, on Friday evening, Alderman W. Wil- liams, J.P., presented certificates to i successful members of Dr. J. Jones's classes in first aid and sick nursing. Ninety-five per cent. of the students passed the examination, conducted by the Glamorgan Education Committee. Addresses were delivered by Dr. Rankin, Abergavenny, Drs. J. Jones and D. Morgan Jones, and Mr- D. W. Jones. All the students are members of the Pontlottyn Volunteer Aid De- tachment, attached to the Caerphilly Red Cross Hospital.

INTERESTING MARRIAGE AT RHYMNEY. RUTHERFORD-DAVIES. On Monday morning an interesting marriage was solemnised at the Parish Church, of Flight-Lioutenant Robert' Rutherford, of the Royal Flying Corps, youngest son of Mr Robert Rutherford, J.P., the respect general manager of the Rhymney Iron Com- pany, and Mrs. Rutherford, The Lawn, and Miss Edith Eveline Davies, only daughter of the Jate Rev. David Davies, vicar of Rhymney. Owing to the recent death of the father of the bride, the ceremony was a quiet one, only members of the family and immediate friends being present. The Rev. Gilbert Williams, vicar of Pont- lottyn, officiated. The bride, who was becomingly attired, was attended by Miss Daisy Davies, daughter of the late Dr. Reea T. Jfi. Davies and Mrs. Davies, Brooklands, New Tredegar, and was given away by her brother, Mr Stanley Davies. The duties of best man were discharged by Colonel F. J. Trnmp, D.S.O. Subsequently I Lieut. and Mrs. Rutherford left for Bournemouth. We wish them a long, x happy an d prosperous life.

SCHOOLMASTERS DEATH AT RHYMNEY. We much regret having to record the death, which .took place last week, of Mr Fred Williams, the head teacher of Pantywaun Council Schools. The deceased, who was a comparatively young man, was one of the most popular teachers in the Gelligaer group. A native of Brithdir, he spent a large portion of his time as assistant at the Bargoed Boys prior to his pro- motion to the headship of the Panty- waun Schools. He was well liked, not only by the pupils and his col- leagues, but all sections of the com- munity. The deepest sympathy is felt for his widow and four children, the eldest of whom is but seven years of age, in their sad and irreparable loss, also for his widowed mother. The interment took place at the Rhymney Cemetery, on Tuesday. Rev. Gilbert Williams, Vicar of Pont- lottyn, officiated at the house and at the grave side. The Gelligaer teach- ing profession was represented by Messrs D. W. Jones, Pontlottyn; J. Penry Williams, Newtown; J. James, Deri, Sam Davies, Brithdir; J. Sylvan Evans, B.A., Bargoed; D. J. Terry, Bargoed Goshen Evans, Bargoed D. Jones, Ystrad Mynach; D. Ivor Jones, Pontlottyn J. Bartlett, Brith- dir.- Primary County Inspector Bryn Davies, Mr D. G. Lloyd, Mr Zeph. Jones, Rhymney, were also present, together with a representative gather- ing of the Rhymney and district teachers, and a number of the general public. Wreaths were sent by the Gelligaer Teachers' Association, the staff and children of the Newtown School, and relatives and cousins.

I ASLEEP IN A PIT TRAM. Michael Murray (34), repairer, was summoned at Tredegar on Mon- day, for sleeping in the Markham Colliery. Mr R. H. Spencer, Trede- gar, prosecuted. Harry Saunders, overman, said defendant was lying in the tram fast asleep. Witness took his lamp away and handed it over to the ifreman. Defendant's butty said he was working in the face but when the overman came along witness could hear defendant snor- ing somewhere. Mr Spencer said there were 250 men in the pit at the time. Defendant sent a message that he was ill, admitted the offence, and offered to pay a reason- able fine. Fined 20s. and ordered to pay 20s. costs.
