TO EVADE DEBT. SKEWEN FURNACEMAN'S SAD LAPSE. At Neath County Police Court on Friday, William Evans. furnaceman, Pentreffvnon, j Skewen. was charged with stealing copper to the value of £15. the property of the Cape Copper Works Company. P.C. Click said he saw the defendant oom- ing from the direction of the works with a parcel under his arm. He subsequently dis- covered a la.Iger quantity t.f copper in his house. When charged Evans repiied, "I did take jt, aoid it is no use saying anything different. I did not want to get into debt, and I wanted MY CHILDREN TO BE EQUAL TO ANYBODY ELSE." Mr. W. Samuel Withy, manager cf the I smelting department of the Capo Copper j Works, stated defendant had been in the company's employ for twenty years. Evans pieaded guilty tc a further charge of stealing 25 lbs. of coal from the same company.
