SOLDIERS AS TREASURE HUNTERS
SOLDIERS AS TREASURE HUNTERS Hardly a day passes without the French military authorities receiving a communication in something like the fol- lowing terms:— H Mine. X, when she fled hurredly from the village of Z, at the time of the Ger- man invasion in August 1914, buried her silver and other valuables in the garden. The objects may be found under the fourth chestnut tree, to the right of the tlower-bed. The treasure is enclosed in a tin box, which Mme. X begs the military authorities to restore to her at the under- mentioned addre,-s,ete. Strange to say, the military authorities, in spite of their multitude of other duties, find time generally to act the part of seekers of buried treasure. So, with bul- lets whistling and shells bursting, soldiers do the necessary digging at night, by the light of a lantern, and more often than not succeed in finding the treasure. The latter, however, is usually in a sad state, papers, deeds, bank-notes being soaked and almost unrecognisable. An inventory is made in the presence of an officer, and then sent to the officer com- manding the region, who has the money or deeds or silver restored to the rightful owner.

CHEERFUL THOUGH WOUNDED Swansea Officer's Hospital Experiences. (Passed by Censor). Lieut. Harold Mills, of the 6th Wolshl Regiment, somewhere in France, writes a cheery letter to his parents in Swansea. describing how he came to be wounded. JIe is now in the Duchess of Westmin- ster's Hospital at Le Touq'uet. « It is not very serious," he says, but being just on the joint of the knee, it is rather painful. I got it on Saturday last about 2 p.m. I was in a burning faria t ryingto get an old Belgian josser to leave his 'appy 'ome, when a coal-box came, and burst in the door of the room. I was sent to hospital at Bailleul after waiting all day for darkness on a stretcher. What a game! We got shelled out of that ihospitaL This hospital (La Touquet) is an old casino. I was rather shaky from tha shock but am getting on Al." Lieut. Mills winds up his letter with, the remark: Hoping this finds you as. it leaves me at present—I don't thjnk; and then there is this footnote: "Talk about wounded 'eroes. Temperature taken, pulse felt, back rubbed, body washed about ten times a day—just when. you want to go to sleep. Oy, oy, what at game
I BHAVE KERCH AST MtM REWARDED
I BHAVE KERCH AST MtM REWARDED A fund has been established at Lloyd's for the purpose of making awards to cap- tains, officers of British and Allied mer- chant vessels for gallant conduct in cases where their vessels have been, at- tacked by enemy submarines. The awards are given as honorary ack- nowledgments of gallant conduct, and are irrespective of whether the attacked vessels and their cargoes are insured at Lloyd's or not. A cheque for £250 from Lloyd's has been awarded in the case of the Anglo-Californian. The Anglo-Californian was attacked oft the south of Ireland by a German sub- marine, but in spite of a heavy shell fire, under which the captain and other mem- bers of the crew were killed or wounded at their posts, the vessel was brought into Queenstown.
I CURATE OEPUIISEO BY LADY.
I CURATE OEPUIISEO BY LADY. In the St. Mary's (Wardleworth) Parish Magazine for August is the following:— The dearth of clergy, which is already serious, will he much more severely felt in the immediate future. The national call to arms has resulted in the universities and clergy training colleges being almost empty of students, and if we add to this the refusal of the Bishop to allow a. deacon to come to us on account of tlia vestments which have been in use in our church for naarly half a century, and of which the Bishop disapproves, the pros- pect of filling our vacant curacy seeing very remote. Seeing the pastoral work must go on. the vicar has secured the services of a trained lady worker from St. Hilda's House, Manchester. Miss Davy will com- mence her duties at the beginning of October. She will wear a grey uniform, hut it should be clearly understood she is in no sense a nurse, her duties being entirely religious."
