-SWANSEA LICENSEE __I ■ ■…
SWANSEA LICENSEE I .i ■■ j ANOTHER PROSEGUTlOi FOR SALE: IN PROHIBITED HOURS In view of recent events there was an added interest in a licensing case at Swan- sea on Monday, before Mr. R. Martin (chairman), Mr. Fred Edwards and Mr. Ilyani Goldberg. Mr. llarold King prose- cuted and Mr. Henry Thompson repre- scnted tho defendants, the latter being j Mrs. Mary Walsh, licensee of the Dublin Arms, Jennie Walsh, her daughter, and Mary O'Briea, servant. Mrs. Walsh was summoned for dispatch- ing by her servant or agent beer for con- sumption off the premises during pro- hibited hours on Feb. 10th. Miss Jennie Walsh was summoned for unlawfully per- milting Miss O'Brien to take beer from tlitt premises, and Mary O'Brien for tak- ing tho beer from the premises at a pro- hibited hour. THE CASE FOR THE POLICE. Mr. King said on the date mentioned Detectives Francis and Gubb, at 3 o'clock, saw Mary O'Brien leaving the premises by the side door carrying a 2 gallon jar. The officers asked her what she was carrying, and she replied, Two gallons of beer, i and it was paid for before 2 o'clock and I had no time to take it oat before." The detectives accompanied her to the Dublin A rms and there saw Mrs. Walsh and Miss Walsh. Miss Walsh said H Yes, it was for She paid for it between 2 o'clock and half-past. She could not carry it, so 1 let the girl go." Mrs. Waish dfnicd all knowledge of the occurrence. ?.Iis,s Walsh then added, It's my fault." j Miss O'Brien then said, Yes. I could do with a for a month." To the officers Mrs. Walsh said, Don't take it (the beer) out. It will be such a show-up. Take a !it t le, drop in a bottle." t DEFENDANTS EXPRESS REGRET. I Mr. Thompson, before opening his de- fence, said whenever Mr. King prosecuted he put the case with absolute fairness, and whilst, not conceding anything to the defendants, he stated any facts in their Favour. He wanted to thank Mr. King for I the exceedingly fair way in which he had put the case before their worships. The defence was that Mrs. Walsh, through illness, took no part in the man- ageinent'of the hotel, which wag entirely carried out by Mis<; AYalsh. This being a Saturday, it was the busiest tims of the n'eck. The beer was ordered as stated, and owing to the busy time. Miss Walsh neg- lected to the beer until threo o'clock. rrs, Walsh hnd held the licence for 22 years, and had an excellent character. All the defendants expressed sorrow. After brief consideration, the bench fined each defendant 10s. Dr. O'Sullivan, J.P., was also, on the bench, hut did not adjudicate. j
WOMEN ON THE LAND. j
WOMEN ON THE LAND. At a meeting of the Carmarthenshire j Women's War Agricultural Committee at Carmarthen, on. Saturday, Mr. Ben Avails, Pencader, presiding, a letter was 1 received from the Board of Agriculture rcierring to the urgency of the food ques- tion and tho shortage of women labour on farms, and said they hoped to issue shortly, dctail-3 of a for their: better employment on the land. They asked that IlnExseutin Committeo be npfointpd with fuU powers. M, D. W. Druiumond ea!d he waA struck in going over the agricultural census returns by the extraordinary ex- cess of women on farms in Carmarthen- shire. Those women might be induced to go to work on other farms where there was a shortage. Mrs. Pryce Rico (Llandovery) said the women referred to were the wins and daughters of farmers who were already doing the work of the husbands and brothers who had gone to the Army. Mr. Drummond agreed with that un to a certain p">iut. He instanced, however, a farm of 150 acres where five girls were put down as doing domestic work, whereas all that work could easily be done by the wife and two daughters. An Executive Committee was formed. The appointment of Miss Jones, daughtc-r of Alderman W. N. Jor.es, Ammanford, j as paid organiser of woman labour on farms in the county was recommended to tho Board of Agriculture. j

Mr. Ben Evans, Pencader, eaid that the census undertaken by the Committee with a view to ascertaining the extent of the crops grown and the position with regard to labour implements and fertilisers, was not yet completed, but from what he had already seen and heard they could antici- pate an increase iu the crops grown of no leas than 10 per cent, or more.
