THE IMPORTANCE OF FAT. I -I
THE IMPORTANCE OF FAT. I Fortunately, in this country we hav, Dot yet expsric-need the terrible results of the deprivation from fatty foods from which tie Germans are suffering so acutely. A real shortage of fat is not only difficult to her, but pernicious in its effects upon the health, especially of chil- dren. In war-time it is more than -?vor im- portant to economise in actual fat with- out depriving the system (?f this Ms&ntial form of food. Ordinary hnad i? deSci?nt in fat, although some breads contain a 11 considerable ciuanfitv. Such breads are infinitely preferable at all times, but especially under exi?tin'j conditions. 11 1 White Sour contains 1.5 per cent, cf fat, whole meal flour 1.67, while Hovis flour I contains 3..3.5. It is, therefore, obvinus I that Hovis bread has twice os much t'nt ae wholemeal bread. and evon a greater preponderance when compared with white, the reason being that Ilovis jj flour contains 25 per cent, of wheat germ, of which whole meal flour contains only II about 2 ner c?n?.. wherea? white flo i? bereft of the jjerm altogether.

AN AMATEUR MATINEE.
AN AMATEUR MATINEE. Last December a special matinee was given at the Swansea Empire on behalf, of the 6th Welsh Committees Fund for' Swansea War Widows. The great feature of the gathering was that all the per- formers were amateurs, and the audience, provided with ballot papers, decided by their votes the awards of the prizes offered. Mr. Frank Allen has now granted the use of the Empire for a similar mat- inee, the proceeds of which are to be de- voted to the Chamber of Commerce Fund for providing additional beds in the town for wounded soldiers sent hojme from the front. The other matinee was so success- ful, and proved eo popular with the audi- ence, that the outlook of the new venture is good. Mr. G. H. Richardson, manager of the Empire, has already opened his list of entrants for the competition, which is fixed for April 28th.
