Abergavenny Rural District Council. The monthly meeting was held nn Tuesday. Present Mr. R. Johnson, eiiatnnan Mr. H. \'V. Lewis. vice-chairni:m Messrs. J. Watkins, W. Cwillim, Chas. Thomas. Wm. Biggs, Wm. \i!- HRms, 1). Hdwards, John Baynam. B. I'rice, John Jenkins. (eo. Spenec!r. .).\XGnROrS)HXC! Mr. J. H. Farquhar IHiglmays Clerk), in re:erence to ri dangerous fence at an old quarry iu the Church road, Uauvair. read a letter fron! Messrs. Smith' and Marshal!, agents to the Pantygoitre estate, wlio said they would be at PantygoÍtre in the course of a few days and would inspect the fence, othing further had been heard, however. The Chairman said they had Letter write I ;gajn, and the Clerk was instructed to do so. I TOO MUCH W;\T;[:R. t The Surveyor reported on the oversow of water on the roadbyBrooksI'armUanw'enarth t'Itra. He and Mr. John Watkins had in- spected it and found an old drain, wliicli was about 80 yards long. The water all canie off the farm and ran down the tone drain, and there was scarcely any of the Council's water in it. The drain had been there or 40 years, and to ,o or 4() years, and to repair it was quite out of the question, for it had collapsed, and it would be quite as cheap to put ? new one there. If they could take the water on to the land on the other side of the road they would secure a nearer outlet and would save half the distance. I Mr. John Watkins said he did not think the tenant was very favourable to the idea. If work was nor done now. it would be a dinicult job in the winter, as there was nearly enough water coming down to turn a mill. It was sugL:estecl that as the water all came off the farm, the owner sho'dd be asked to keep it off the road. and the Clerk was instructed t(t write accordingly. I KOADCEXSrS. The Surveyor said the census would have to he taken from 6 o 'clock in tin- morning till 10 o'clock at night, for a week, those appointed takine: turus of eight hours' duty at each point. Cycles, motor cycles, motor cars. tractions, traps, horses, lorries, and all the various forms t of locomotion would have to oe enumerated. <.nd the total weight computed according to the basis laid down by the Roads Board. It was v.ork whi.h required intelligence, and lie )x-- Hevcd tile County Council had enlisted the the services of school teachers. It was proposed to pay them [. for the week and to fix the census points near a cottage where they couid shelter if it was raining, and los. was to he paid for the u,c of the colta"s. If tht're uas no cott,e 'jear, it was proposed to put up huts. Mr. Chas. Thomas said lie thought he should ..pply for an appointment. (Laughter). It was thought !)y several menihcrs that census t:.k.ers could h. got- for less than ). for the week, ,id the question of the appointments and the remuneration was left in the hands of the Pinanc Committee.
I Death of Mr. W. H. Wilson…
I Death of Mr. W. H. Wilson Way. With deep regret we record the death of a well-known and widely-esteemed resident of Abergavenny, in the person of Mr. Way. \vho- passed away on Friday night. The end came with tragic suddenness, the cause of death being cerebral hemorrhage. He had been failing in health for some months past, and had been subject to premonitory attacks. He and his family took up their residence in Abergavenny upwards of thirty years ago, and for over twenty years, and up to the time of his dea)-h. he had been associated with the Abergavenny Chronicle as correspondent for the Aberga- venny district, a duty which he performed with fidelity and marked ability. He was a facile aud able descriptive writer, and his sketches of Half-holiday Rambles and descriptions of almost every place of interest in the district. which have from time to time appeared in the columns of the Chronicle," were read with very great appreciation. He made the beauty of the scenery in the neighbourhood of the town of his adoption a special and never-failing theme, and we have reason to think that Ills writings on these subjects tended not a little to attract people to the town either as temporary visitors or to take up their permanent resideuce- within our borders. He was a special favourite with young people and children, whose festivities and gatherings lie took an inunitc delight in recording. A kinder or more considerate man could not be found, and his urbane manner and geniality made him exceedingly popular among all classes. The interment of our departed friend took place in IJanwenarth Churchyard on Moudav. the Rev. J. R. Philips. R.D.. of Holy Trinity Church, ofnciat.ing. A number of beautiful wreaths were sent, and expressions of sympathy were very general. THE FUNERAL. The funeral took place quietly on Mon'tay afternoon, the interment being in the gray( of the deceased's first wife at FJanwenarth Church- yard. There was onlv a small attendance, on account of the awkwardness of the day and the shortness of notice. The relatives present were Miss Kate Way, Brighton (daughter) and Mr Reg. Way, London (grandson). The Press was represented by alderman Z. Wheatley and Mr. Cco. Harris, and th" Chronicle Ofnce bv Mr. Edgar C. Straker and Mr. Wm. C. Philhps. Mr. A. T. Kyle (Cas Manager) was also present. The bearers were Mr. W. Matthews fLanib Inn). Mr. H. Tayfor, Mr. Wm. C. PhiIIips, Mr. I<aw- re;;ce. Mr. Bevan (Monnt Pleasant), Mr Edwards. The burial ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. R. Phillips. R.D. (vicar of Holy Trinity). The floral tributes were as follows :—From his beloved and loving Children; "With deep regret the last tokfn of re.spect to an old and faithful friend and representative." from M. Morgan & Co., Chronicle Omce \Vitl! deep regret." from tlie' Aberga-eniiN- CIironicle" Staff; "A last tribute of respect to a colleague and a gentleman." from Mr. Geo. Harris With ( l e,e-,)est from deepest svmpatliv from Mr. and Mrs. Matthews and famiJy; With deep regret and sympatljv from Mr. and Mrs. Robert Townsend Wit It deepest sympatliy," from Alderman and Mrs. Z. Whcatlev from Mrs. Williams (Commercial- street); Mr.andMrs. C.Vates; "His dear friends, Mrs. Tavlor and Miss Price from Madge Parry, to my devoted friend." RURAL COUNCIL'S SYMPATHY. At the conclusion of the monthly meeting of the Abe'ayenny Rural District Council on Tuesday, Mr. Chas. Thomas said he should like to express not only his o-.vn but he believed the regret of a.ll of them. that one familiar face \vas absent that day. He alluded to the late re- porter for the Chronicle." Mr. Way. Mr. Wav had attended their meetings ever since he had ncen a member, and lie understood that he had resided in the town for getting on .to years. He thought they, as a public body. should express hé¡r repret at the death of one who had attended their meetings for so many years. Mr. Wav had been very merciful to some of them when they had endeavoured to make a few remarks. He should like to propose a vote of condolence with the family and regret that Mr. Way had been taken from them. He was sure they were 2.1! sorry to lose such a familiar friend. The Chairman said he wished to endorse everv word that Mr. Thomas had said. He always looked, upon Mr. Way as a friend, and had ex- perienced nothing but kindness at his hands. .T olin Ba Mr. John Baynam also associated himself with ';he vote of sympathy. He had known Mr. Way something like -jo years, when Mr. Way hrst. visited his father's farm. He had always been very familiar with Mr. Way, and found him a very pleasant friend whenever he met him. The vote was carried in silence, the members rising to their feet. GUARDIANS' REFERENCE. At the conclusion of the (Guardians' meeting to-day (Friday) the Chairman, Major Williams, said that since th'.ir last meeting they had lost the services of an old and valued representative of the Press, Mr. Way of tlie Chronicle." He moved that a vote cf condolence be sent to the family. Mr. Robert Workman seconded, with grea.t regret, and the vote was carried in silence the members rising to their feet.
