Amateur theatrical performances are not always stimulating, but the amateurs who were engaged at the Town Hall on Wednesday night, in support of the local Red Cross and Maindiff Hospital funds, gave an admirable display of histrionic talent, and their efforts were en- joyed by a large audience. The triple bill in- cluded a farce, a comedy, and a play of quite a different type, so that the fare was diverse enough. Dr. X R. Phillips was the stage manager, and the members of the Borough Theatre orchestra generously gave their services for the occasion by permission of Mr. and Mrs. Vyvian Thomas. All the furniture for the three plays was kindly lent by Mr. Charles Downes, of Frogmore-street. There were only three characters in That Brute Simmon. a farce bv Arthur Morrison and Herbert C. Sargent. Mr. F. R. Hobbes capably represented Thomas Simmons, the mild and uncomplaining working man who had married Bob Ford's widow." Mrs. F. R. Hobbes' pourtrayal of the part of the exacting, grumbling Mrs. Simmons was verv cleverly done, and in this and her other parts ifrs. Hobbes shewed herself an actress of considerable talent. She successfully sank her own individuality in the difficult part of Mrs. Simmons, and the wav she disciplined her husband, made his Sundav trousers, and cut his hair with a basin 011 his head. was provocative of much amusement. The climax comes when Bob Ford, lier first husband, who is supposed to have perished in a watery grave, turns up in Mrs. Sinimons's temporary absence, and after some conversation offers to allow Simmons to continue his domestic felicity for the sum of 1-5. Simmons. however, is not so selfish as to keep a wife from her rightful husband, and he offers to make himseli scarce, even when Ford at last only demands a wet for his sacrifice. The contest of unselfishness between the two men, neither of whom would rob the other of such a treasure for worlds, was really delightful. Mrs. Simmons returns and is faced with the problem oi which to keep, and in the confusion Ford escapes through the window en route for China, and Simmons slips through the door and announces his intention of going to the Korth Pole. It is a simple plot, but much humour was got out of it, and tlie appreciation of the audience was fully evident. In the comedy The Rest Cure (by Gertrude Iv. Jennings), the fun centres round Clarence Reed, an author who is run down and has gone into a nursing home for a rest cure. Mr. F. R. Hobbes gave a capital characterisation of Clarence Rood, who was shown in a bed in one of the wards, distracted and tortured in mind by the noisiness of everybody connected with v the singular establishment. Mrs. R. Townsend was a sympathetic Mrs. Reed. Mrs. Hevwood and Mrs. F. R. Hobbes were excellent as the two nurses, Alice Palmer and May Williams, respec- tively nicknamed fair cat and dark cat," who do not help the patient's recovery much. Mrs. Iltyd Gardner was delightful as Muriel, the servant at the home, who contributes her full share to the noise of the establishment, but who, having ambitions in regard to authorship her- self, conspires to enable the distraught patient to escape from the nerve-racking place. The piece is excellently performed, but chief honour must go to Mrs. Gardner. Alfred Sutro's play The Bracelet," contains a good deal of sentiment, but ends on a note of humour, which being somewhat unexpected is all the more irresistible. Mr. and Mrs. F. R. Hobbes play the principal parts of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Western. Mrs. Western loses her bracelet, and, although not suspicious, suspects everybody. Finally she notices a bracelet on í the arm of Miss Farren, the governess, and at once charges her with stealing it. In the ex- postulations which follow a hand is taken by Mrs. Western's brother. His Honour Judge Banket, who, with Mrs. Banket, has come to dine. The bracelet worn by the governess, so Harvey Western indignantly remonstrates, is not Mrs. Western's, but is of slightly different pattern. Eventually he admits he has given it to her as she admired the one worn by his wife. The fat is in the fire, and it is impossible for Harvey or His Honour Judge Banket to con- vince the two ladies of good intentions. When Mr. and Mrs. Western are left alone, Haney unburdens his soul and speaks his mind as to the way his wife has neglected domestic ties. She has been cold and unresponsive, and the only thing he has had worth living for of late years has been the sympathy of Miss Farren, whom he has rewarded with presents. Miss Farren has noble qualities, and he confesses that she is very fond of him. He will not have her turned out of the house. He fears that if Mrs. Western turns her out, as she threatens to do, she may go and drown herself. After Mrs. Western has retorted as to what she thinks of her husband Miss Farren comes in to sav Mr' Western is struck dumb with amazement nnrl Mrs. Western is also a little taken aback. Miss Farren explains that she cannot stav and in anv case she intended to give her notice the next day. She was going on the stage, and her fiance-a blank look from Mr. Western—was very anxious that she should do so. While Airs. Western is writing out the cheque for her salary she goes to thank Mr. Western for all his kind- ness to her, which she appreciated, as it was so very dull there. As Miss Farren bids adieu and finally leaves the room, Mrs. Western turns to her husband and says, rather maliciouslv 11 I don't think she will drown herself, HaYN-ev —and Harvey has not a word to offer in con' tradiction. Both Mr. and Mrs. Hobbes acquit themselves remarkably well in the leading roles, so different from the characters they had previously repre- sented. In the character of His Honour Judge Banket, Mr. Iltyd Gardner had a part which fitted him like a glove, and some of the remarks made by him and also made at his expense were keenly relished by the audience. Mrs. Iltyd (Gardner, as Mrs. Banket, had not much to do except to sympathise with Mrs. Western, and to keep her husband from talking too much, but she did it well. Mrs. Heywood gave a charming representation of the governess, Miss Farren. The other parts were capably taken as follows Martin, Mr. R. I'. A. Pitt William, Mr. J. S. Davies Smithcrs, Miss Xora Bretherton. Altogether the .performances gave great j pleasure, and as a result a substantial sum will no doubt be handed over lor the objects men- tioned.
