Inquiries go to show that the deceased signalled to the surface that he wished to come up, and the cage had been lifted about 8 yards when in an instant there was a terrific blast. There were three men in thepit at this time, hut owing to the destruction of the gear- ing it was found impossible to reach the men by means of the upcast.
