JEWISH THANKSGIVING. To-morrow, the 19th July, being Peace Day throughout the Empire, the local Hebrew community will hold at the Synagogue, Queen Victoria read, a special thanksgiving service at 4.15 p.m. The Rev. M. J. Feldman will deliver on address.

CINEMA APPOINTMENT. I The friends of Mr. Fred W. Carpenter will be glad to hear of his appointment as sole business manager of an important oircuit of Cinemas in Glamorganshire. For some time past, our townsman has been manager of the large cinema at Morriston, and the directors haye now placed him in charge of the six which they control. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Carpenter, Church street.

NEW DOCK STARS. I Local followers of Rugby football will be glad to learn that the New Dock Stars hope to take the field again next season. The ground difficulty has been overcome, thanks to the efforts of Mr. H. C. Bond, Mr. E. P. Lewis and Mr. Chas. Saunders, -of Messrs. Richard Thomas and Co. Ltd. At the general meeting of the Club, a vote of condolence with the bereaved re- latives of the comrades who made the supreme sacrifice in the great war, was passed. Mr. George Morgan, the Scarlet for- ward, was elected captain; Mr. W. Morgan, secretary; and Mr. J. D. Howells, treasurer. Everything points to a successful season, the Club having en- tered for the Llanelly Rugby Cup, which will probably find its resting place in Ward 3. A smoking concert will be held at the Dock- Hotel to-morrow evening (Satur- day), when Mr. T. R. Mills will take the vhair. All old and intending members are cordially invited.

That his neighbour, with an unfortunate impediment in his speech turned to him and said "W-what is the n-n-name of the m-music they are p-p-playing ? U That it happend that the orchestra were playing that popular song "K-K- Katy," and after he had informed him he was subject to some very rude remarks. That local heroes have not left all their bravery behind when they quitted the battlefields. That one who is shortly returning from. France has written to a friend informing him that he is bringing with him a French widow with her family of five. That an increase in the price of cigar- ettes is to be expected shortly. That it may be truly said that every cloud has a silver lining. That the moustache grown by a re- cently demobbed sailor, has brought from his friends a number of remarks, polite and otherwise. That one of them terms it "a face fun- gus on the upper lip." That after all the criticism passed up to the time of going to press he still possesses the little "tosh." That an engineer engaged at a local works seems to be developing into a proper k-nut lately. That although engaged at a works near the beach, each night before going for his usual after-work swim he walks up to Stepney street displaying his towels and then returns to the briny. That two charming lady clerks figured as principals in an impromptu wrestling competition near the Furnace Pond on Monday. That they proved quite adepts at dodging and doubling while feinting for a hold. That we would advise Mr. Isaacs to induce them to appear on the boards. That the Furnace does not seem to be a land of blisa for cooing couples. That one fine fellow got so scared at the hooliganism of some youths recently that he showed a clean pair of heels even to his lady friend. That she much to the annoyance of the hooligans proved quite equal to taking care of herself. That two youths from the Lakefield dis- trict promise to blossom forth as pro- minent public men-when they get older. That in the "social" life of the town they are already the most sought after. That our old rivals Swansea will be at Stradey to-morrow. That it being "Peace Day," we wonder whether the "hatchet" of keen rivalry and antagonism always in evidence be- tween the two teams will be buried at Stradey for ever. That two local families will never again build visions of a day at Swiss Valley until they have actually arrived on the spot. That last Saturday was a day arranged to visit the picturesque spot—but alas, pa lost the permits. That not to be done out of the trip it was decided to postpone it until the after- noon, and huge preparations were made. I THE LAST OF THE CHILDREN. I Much sympathy is felt with ex-Sergt. James Thomas and Mrs. Thomas, 8 Tyisha road, late of Dock Police Station, in their sad bereavement. Tuesday, the 8th inst, witnessed the passing of the last of their children, namely, James Theophilus Thomas, who "crossed the bar" a few weeks before reaching his 18th birthday. The late Master James Theophilus was the fifth grown up child for Mr. and Mrs Thomas to bury, among whom was the late Mr D. M. Thomas, solicitor, whose brilliant career was cut short by the hand of death a little over a year ago. The interment took place last Monday at Bryn Cemetery, where the Rev. T. Orchwy Bowen, Ebenezer, and the Rev. J. Evans, Bryn, officiated.

Llanelly Choir and the Kaiser. The revived interest in the ex- Kaiser makes it worth while per- haps, recalling the account given by Mr. Llewelyn Williams of the visit of the Llanelly Choir to Windsor Castle in November, 1907, when they sang before Wilhelm and other not- able people. King Edward, who had commanded Mr Williams' attendance (he being then member for Llanelly) at once called upon him and said: "Let me present you to the German Emperor." The Kaiser shook him heartily by the hand and said "What beautiful voices your choir baTe, adding that he was pleased to see in the programme a hymn tune com- posed by his grandfather. "Your Welsh hymn tunes are very much like our German tunes," the Kaiser added, "but as you know in Germany we go in for male choirs rather than mixed. choirs." Mr. Williams said that the Kaiser spoke English with a strong German accent—so different from the Empress,—a charming, gracious woman who spoke English like a native. "The Kaiser," con- cluded Mr. Williams, "is a much more insignificant fellow when tou get near him, than you would judge from his photographs, because he has such a low forehead."
