I - A NATIONAL LOSS. I
I A NATIONAL LOSS. I I The death of Viscount Rhondda is, without exaggeratio 1, a g eat national loss, and from the I highest to the lowest in the land there was heartfelt sorrow at the news of his demise. Rarely has the nitio i, as a whole, followed with such intense anxiety the bulletins issued in the illness of any great personage or held such sincere hopes of his recovery. The service he rendered to the nation as Food Controller in creating order out of chaos is inc Iculable, and the result of the application of his great business talents to the diffic ilt problem with what he was faced has been f-It ia every home. He will always be remembered as the man who abolished queues, and there are many who hold the opinion that he saved the country from a revolution at a critical period of the war. He treated 11 r like and his aim was to ensure that high and low, rich and poor, were dealt with as members of ore great family who should share and share clike. The o ly preference he gave Was to those who were doing heavy manual work which enti led them to extra rations, or the growing ch Idren destined to b? the future men and women of the Empire. He changed a system under w lich there was scarcity, hardship and scrambling for food, to a system under which there was comparative plenty, and by his handling of the food queston generally he dealt Germany one of the shrewdest blows of the war. He was a Napoleon of finance and a man of rare business acumen. He made his fortune by hard work, Sleer ability and enterprise, and he helped largely to bring an era of prosperity to South Wales such as it had never known before. He was a man of large ideas and generous instincts, and he was ever ready to devote his great talents to the service of his country. His was always a dominating personality, and he could have made his mark in politics but for the fact that he abhorred politic, I subterfuges and the par, lysis engendered by party politics. His aim was ever to get thi. gs done, and not to w ste time by talking platitudes. He displayed his characteristic zest for work and organisation when he took on the thankless office of Pood Controller, and he stuck to his task even against medic l advice and carried on until his physical powers gave way. Had he taken the rest to wnich his strenuous life entitled him, he might have lived many more years, and it can truly be said that he died in the service of his country. He was a man, take him for all in alL" Would there were more strong xaen of his type in our national life.
