71 -=- RE-CONSTRUCTION AT ABER- GAVENNY. These are the days of re-construction, and if only half the promises which have been made are fulfilled this country should be a much better place tcT live in in the future. The spirit of re- construction is needed locally as well as nation- ally, and it is gratifying to note that that spirit is existent at Abergavenny. It is mahifested in the housing scheme, which is to be put into operation as soon as possible and which will when completed, be a really fine acquisition to the borough. It is also manifested in the newly- formed Attractions and Improvement Associ- ation, which already bids fair to become a vigorous and active and-more important still- useful organisation in the interests of the town. u Without any reflection on any previous effort which have been made iu the borough, there has never before been in the town an Association of this character or one with such possibilities. It does not intend to confine itself to one particular branch of activity, but to strike out in every direction where there is any benefit to be oh- tained.. Its sole object is to reap the greatest advantage to the town and to the ratepayers in every way that enterprise and energy can ac- complish, and it starts with the idea of co- ordinating all local efforts, with that purpose in view. For many years people have talked about what ought to be done at Abergavenny, but talk unaccompanied by action is of no value. The Attractions and Improvement Association are going to talk* about these things, of course but only as a preliminary to taking action for their accomplishment. They ate going to make it their business to see if these ideas, and other ideas which are put forward, cannot be carried into effect. Of course, the Association do act pretend, and no one expects, that thev are going to accomplish miracles all at once. The organisation has first of all to be built upon a solid foundation, and the sinews of war have to be provided before any ambitious schemes can fee embarked upon. An appeal is being made to the public to give the Association a fair start by providing the funds to enable it to go ahead. Such financial help given now will, it is hoped, be repaid a hundredfold in benefit to the town later on. There are many ways which the Association can adopt of raising revenne, and once it has established its reserve fund to pro. vide for all emergencies, it can begin to show something to justify its existence. If figures were compiled of the amount raised in Aberga- venny during the war for various war funds and sectional objects the total would astonish many people. Vfaiat might be done if that sum were spent on town improvements ? It must be re membered that practically all this money was raised among townspeople, and the question arises, How much more might be raised by attracting' visitors from outside ? One can readily see that there are great possibilities in the way of producing revenue, if the town asy whole will pull together and work unitedly with one will. Already a number of energetic towns- Cen who take a real interest in the welfare of their town are associated with hte movement and it is their desire to enlist the services of all who are able to put their shoulder to the wheel of progress. There will no doubt be differences of opinion among townspeople on some matters, and we feel sure that those concerned in the moTement will welcome criticism that it helmfu and constructive. The whole, object of the movement is to benefit the town and it has not been inaugurated for the furtherance of any single private interest. Townspeople as a whole, and particularly the tradespeople, ought to sympathise with such an object and give it all the support they can, whether financially in the initial stages or by work on committees, or by suggestion. Upon that general support will largely depend the success of the movement and the amount of benefit which will accrue to the town.
