THE STOLEN PflERII, .A ROMANCE…
THE STOLEN PflERII, A ROMANCE OF LOVE, INVENTION, AND A GREAT CITY- By R. NORMAN SILVER, Author of "Hate, the Destroyer," "A Daughter of Mystery," &,ci CHAPTER XXIV,-Continued, The Glow on the River Bank. Slinking along at the base of the hoarding, he contrived to dart behind one of the reverted doors unperceived. His perspicuity was justified. There was an aperture such as he had chosen; he stared eagerly through it. The men outside were engaged in laying a. sloping track of beams and ties to the margin of the river. Ransom understood in a moment that it was the continuation of a launching- way from within. Upward and inward it went across the enclosure to where, in a low "cradle." was supported an elongated, cigar- shaped hull, like that of a torpedo. About were ranged a score or 80 of Wells lights, their oil-torches hissing and flaring in the night air. Above this singular craft was a make-shift crane of beams and pullies, and this was already being dismantled. But a couple of movable forges still sparkled and shone, and the sound of the hammer echoed ringingly from an unseen anvil. But it was the steel hull itself that hypnotised Oswald Ransom into attention. The stern pointed directly towards him, and the radiance from a brace of Wells lights blazed full on it; and he saw distinctly that the vessel—an unmistakable submarine—had two screws on a. single axis, as had the Phoenix, and that, like her, the top-sides of the former were fitted with longitudinal fins. The draughtsman had seen enough. He backed out and retreated into safety, mutter- ing to himself: "Diamond cut diamond!" he said, as he struck across the dark maze of the boiler- factory. "So that is your game, is it? Very well, Mr. Martin Blair, perhaps, on the whole, you had better have remained—dead!" I CHAPTER XXV. I I Harrison Mack's Sunday Morning. I Misto' Blair! Misto' Blair!" A quintette of black knuckles rapped re- soundingly at a polished panel, and one of the Oriana's negro servants set a huge ear to the door of a state-room on the lower deck of the yacht. The door creaked, and opened slowly. Martin Blair stood on the threshold, staring peculiarly at the coloured attendant; the I pupil's of the inventor's eyes were contracted, and he shivered in the morning air. He wore neither nightdress nor pyjamas, but a reefer I suit of serge, much crumpled, as if he had been sleeping in it. His skin was dry and It withered-looking, aod his breathing singularly audible. "Ef you please, sah," pursued the negro briskly, "Misto' Mack's oome aboard, and tol' me: See if Misto' Blair's awake yet,' sah." Mack!" exclaimed the inventor. Say I'll be there in a jiffey, Pompey. What time is it —thundering late, or confoundedly early?" Half-past nine, sah," answered the other, grinning. Misto' Mack took the night train, sah, and come off in a shore-boat." "All right!" said Blair, and retreated into his room. The bed was ruffled, though the clothes had not been turned down. He had slept on it in his ordinary garments, as on a sofa. Upon a wall-tray near the pillow was a glass, a carafe, and a brandy bottle. He poured him- self out a stiff potation, and drank it to the I last drop. This done, he put away the phial of chloral crystals that he had left out the preceding evening, splashed some water on his hands and face. brushed his hair, combed his beard, pulled down the cuffs of his blue linen shirt, and went out to the millionaire's room. Harrison Mack, his slim and Transatlantic elegance not visibly affected by his journey, was sitting at his desk, selecting an occasional envelope from his mail, and ripping it up to obtain a hasty glimpse of its contents. His gaunt, keen physiognomy was as alert, yet as non-committal as ever. He heard Blair's footsteps, glanced aside. and rose to shake his friend's hand with the utmost deliberation. Waal," he observed, I guess you've been pining to see me!" The inventor's breast heaved suddenly, but he succeeded in smiling. Oh, I've been hard at work," he rejoined, "living between the yacht and the yard. I thought I might as well take French leave and settle down on board; it meant being nearer the job. The time has not passed so slowly; as you perceive, it has reconciled me to the worst. I inferred what had happened when you did not wire-the Government refuses me a pardon." Go easy," advised the American, I didn't say so. I've had a hard row to hoe, but it might have panned out worse. This is the position: If the Admiralty cotton to the boat, and my abstract of your affair squares with some secret inquiries the War Office are to make, you shall have your pardon. So, though we haven't the signed parchment, yet there's no doubt we soon shall have." Martin Blair, otherwise Richard Goulder, sank into a seat by the millionaire's desk, and covered his face. Harrison Mack occupied himself by cutting the end of a cigar. I had to be rather confidential with the Secretary," proceeded the American, but that needn't trouble you. He gave me his word of honour not to divulge your real identity to anyone before the pardon is definitely promised—except, of coarse, to a, certain royal personage, upon whose view of the matter a great deal depends. But I reckon the business is practically fixed up— bar making sure all round-for Mr. Secretary would say nothing till last evening, when I saw him at his house, and I guessed he'd been feeling other people's pulses besides his own. The millionaire laid down his cigar, un- lighted, and put a firm hand on the shaking shoulder of the inventor. Neither man spoke for a moment, and then Blair broke the silence. "You're a good fellow, Mack!" he mur- mured.-his face still hidden. I can't say what I'd like." Harrison Mack got up cheerfully. "Don't begin to cry," he recommended; and now, Blair-for I shan't ever get used to you other name whau I'm able safely to call you by it—I'm going to have a shave and get ashore about an errand I've been postponing a considerable while. You'll be all the better for having your sleep out. But say, how's the Dolphin? We're to let the Secretary know when she's ready for inspection, and he'll arrange it with the Admiralty." "Almost finished," answered Blair, strugg- ling back to a more commonplace mood; "only a trifle of fitting to complete, and the launch. to prepare for. We took down the ofane last night, and I told the men to rest to-day—they) were fagged out. But she'll be in the water on Tuesday." That's O.K. commented the American, as he crossed to the entrance of his bedroom: you be off and turn in again." He paused gravely. No worse news of Lady-of your mother, I trust?" he remarked. Blair sighed. She seems to be sinking slowly," he said. Once or twice a week there is a paragraph in the Carhaven journal to the effect that lAdy Goulder's health continues to give cause for anxiety." Harrison Mack nodded sympathetically. "Ali, well!" he replied, "I reckon she'll have a pleasant surprise before long. and happiness is a wonderful stimulant." With which prophecy he passed out of the small library, closing the door behind him. In the bright, airy state-room beyond his valet. was stropping a razor, and -a. thin column of steam rose wavering from a gleaming copper can. The American took off his coat, sat down and put up his feet. He was still a little drowsy from his journey, and the previous ten days' intriguing in a.nd about Whitehall. Half an hour later, after a light but sub- stantial breakfast, he ordered his launch and departed for the shore. At the stage he chartered a hansom—the address he gave was the single word Dock- edge." The driver wrinkled his browe as he gathered up his reins. That's up by the head of the Swim," he said questioningly, out on the Carhaven Road?" I No doubt," assented Harrison Mack vaguely, stepping into the cab. The vehicle went off sharply, swerving this way and that through slumbering business quarters, and making for the scattered houses, wild flats, and ragged uplands at the back of the port towards the south. At the foot of the hill behind the Swim the hansom stopped. Finding that his fare did not descend, the driver lifted the cap. xhis is Dockedge, sir," he remarked. Is it?" queried the American, standing on the splash-board to look about him at the quiet basins, the wind-swept slopes, and the distant Bow-bank, with its spires and hamlets. He sorted out some coins for his Jehu. Do yon happen to be able," he added, to direct me to a house called the 'Crow's Nest' ?" "Crowds Nest!" repeated the driver, accept- ing the offered payment with alacrity; I never recollect hearing the name. May-bit it'. one of the houses on the side of the hill there —they're the only ones hereabout." Thanks," said Harrison Mack, getting down, I'll see. If you care to wait round, I may be glad to have you drive me into town again." "Right you are, sir," agreed the. cabman. and he drew. his vehicle to the parapet and dropped the iron leg beneath it. The millionaire strolled up the road-& species of beaten track with cinder footpaths rather than a regulation thoroughfare—that crossed the hill transversely from the inner frontier of Goulder's to the lofty crest above. The first of the dwellings upon it was the irregularly-roofed, flag-staffed residence of the Hopes. He approached it leisurely, enjoying the fresh breeze that buffeted him, and tossed the ragged jack at the peak of the, gaff hard by. The dulness of the preceding day, had given place to a glorious autumn morning, and the sun glinted yellowly on- the paneo and roof-tiles of the cottage. The inscription on the green wicket caught Harrison Mack's eye; its white letters spelled the title he was in search of: The Crow's Nest." Thus enlightened, the American studied it carefully, noticing the trim garden, the spick-and-span paint, and the snowy, brasa- barred curtains at the small windows. "It seems mighty probable that some old British sea-dog had a hand in the planting of my little English rose!" he said aloud, as he pushed open the wicket and stalked up the path. He paused, and whistled softly. In a rustio summer-house near him sat Cathbert Hope, a pipe in his fingers, his arm dangling, the copious pages of "Reynolds' on his knee. The under-foreman was dozing. This is the Ancient Mariner Tlimself. I'll bet a V," said the millionaire; I wonder if the English rose is blooming anywhere in tha vicinity!" He stepped quietly to the porch. The door into the tiny ante-chamber of the cottago stood wide. Harrison Mack peered in. By the table of the quaint living-room out Narcissa, a dainty figure in a print blouse and white apron, a basin in her lap, a knife between her fingers, peeling apples. Her blue eyes were bent on her task, her face; shadowed by thought, her lips a trifle tremulous. Her small feet were shodden in house-slippers of red morocco, and her toes. were crossed one over the other. With her masses of fair hair-albeit they were not plaited in the German fashion—she recalled the characteristic appearance of Marguerite. Harrison Mack, suddenly embarassed by his own espionage, coughed, and removed hia hat. Narcissa looked up, startled, and slowly.. very slowly, rose from her seat. The basin, slid to the floor, and the apples rolled in all directions. With fixed gaze and parted lips, she put up her hands, covered her eyes for a moment, and then looked a<gain—the American, was still there. An expression of bewilder- ment and incredulity sprang into her yoixug countenance. The millionaire tried to speak, and stammered in the process. "I—I trust you will forgive-this-this intrusion," he said; "but I found the door open. I guess I ought to pick up those apples," and he suited the action to the word. The colour came back to Narcissa's cheeks. Oh Mr. Mack," she faltered, you did startle me! I was thinking about you, and I -I fancied something had gone wrong in my head, and conjured up a sort of a ghoet of you. It frightened me. just for the minute." Harrison Mack reached the basin from under the table, and dropped an apple or two into it. I believe I'd have been very glad," he told her calmly, any time in the last two months. to have been frightened in the same way. But though I've thought a heap about you. Mias Hope, my thoughts did not raise a single ghost, nor the ghost turn to reality." Narcissa met his glance, and stooped hastily to pick up an apple. I'm talking of going out typewriting again," she said; "my sister is coming home now. Will you need anyone while you are at Carhaven, Mr. Mack? That's what I was thinking about. Father told me the Oriana was in the river." (To be Contlnnad1
