After Many Years. i
After Many Years. i If ever John C. Studley came near believing in ghosts it was on the second day of July, at half-past three in the afternoon. On that day and at that hour he had made his way through the woods that fringe the sandy cliffs near Sealand Bay, and had come out where he could look down over the whole length of the simmering bay—and it was then he saw the ghost. It was a. bright, sunshiny afternoon; the rattle of hammers came up from a litle ship-yard below; three visitors in a boat were pulling three various ways-yet it was under these most prosaic signs of the realities of life that he saw the ghost of Agnes Thorpe sitting under a tree, sketching the scene he had known so well twenty-two years ago. Twenty-two years ago he had lived in the neighbouring village of straggling Kincombe, the only son of old Captain Studley, and had sat many times either under this very tree, or one very much like it, while Agnes had sketched, as she was sketching now. Then one day he had said something that was unjust. She had called it cruel; angry I words had passed, and what might have been smoothed over by a syllable of expitnation had ended in a violent quarrel. In the wild I illogicality of the angry man, he had thought i I' that by causing her pain he would alleviate his own, and so had shipped on his father's whaler, and had sailed to the ice-fields and the snow. But man's temper is rarely formative, it is never an arbiter of fate, and I storm and stress followed close on his heels for ten years. Then, when 'twas too late for him to return home, Dame Fortune had wooed him a-B though he were the best man in the I world, and he was rich. Rich, without a soul to share his riches, and, about three weeks ago, a wave of loneliness and home- sickness had borne him back here. He had not been nearly so sentimentally affected as he had imagined would be the case, and now, just as he had come to the conclusion that the old place was very stupid, all the old memories had been revived in this startling fashion. For it was startling, and he felt his heart beat faster as he looked at the wraith of his dead love. Then, as he hesitated whether to turn or run or address the spirit, a little fox terrier bounded from beside her ghostly I ladyship and ran with sharp barks towards him. I Come here, Gyp," cried the ghost, and even then Studley could not forbear another shiver, for the voice was that of Agues. But having seen strange sights and mastered himself, and drawing near, said, though quite trembling: Is your name Agnes Thorpe?" No woman could look on Studley's face without feeling that. it was that of a man of which some men might be afraid. but of which no woman could be. So-and for another reason, as you shaJl hear—it was that the ghostly artist said, and smiled as I she said it: No, but that was my mother's name." Then it all came to him in that swiftness of light with which he had so often seen the dav/n ru?h iu. down..there in the tropics, and he knew that his old love lived again in her daughter. My foolish question will show you that that does not surprise me," he said, for you look very much like her-your mother I mean. You knew her then?" Indeed 1 diu," he answered, as perhaps i you might know and as perhaps you might not, if I tola you that my name is Studley- John C. Studley." Of course, of course," the girl said, tilting back her sunbonnet, the better to look clearly at him, I might have known it, had not my mother told me many times that you were dead." I was," he said, dead to her, a suicide of love. And she, of course, is dead to me?" She is dead as our lives go," said the girl, but she was never dead to you as love goes, Mr. Studley. tohe lived and died loving you, and my father, who is also dead, knew that and a-ccepted her duty and wifely affection as the sweetest substitute she had to offer." "Wonderful, and wonderfully sad," said the man. L-was all my evil and wrong." She never said so," said the girl. Then added: "And you loved her did you not?" Well," said Studley, if I was cruel and harsh, at least I have been consistent in my penance—if you can call a. penance that which it was no pain to do-for I have never bestowed a duty and affection on any other woman. "That's good; that's right," said the girl; that's as I would have a man love me." There are many strange things about this meeting," he said at length, pinching the dog's cropped ears, for man and beast were always friends. One is that I had meant I to go away to-morrow, and now I don't want to go away at all." tc "Well, must you?" asked the girl. No," he replied. I am a fairly old man. with no encumbrances—except those of property hardly won." Now, as to being an old man." Raid the girl severely, that is arrant foolishness. I have a picture of you at home that my mother gave me and you look exactly like it." He laughed. That's the reason you didn't know who I was when I asked who you were," he said. Well, I did half know you then," said the girl, but I thought you were dead, while you didn't know at all who I was, for you thought I waa your old sweetheart come to life. So that really evens up our errors and," here she laughed too, in a kind of whimsical way, it makes us of about the same age, doesn't it?" Do you know," he said, after a little while, I feel exactly ae though I wae again playing court to Agnes Thorpe through you?" "Yes?" she said quietly. "Then I suppose I ought to feel as though I were being courted as a reincarnation of my mother?" And do you ?" he asked. Almost." she replied. I wonder," he said, with a quiver in his voice, I wonder if you could ever-possibly —happen—that you could feel so altogether?" The new Agnes did not answer, but surely you can guess that as the time went by he found out what that silence meant.
THE SCENE THROUGH THE WINDOW.
THE SCENE THROUGH THE WINDOW. With your permission I will tell you of a weird experience that happened to me some three or four years ago," began the barrister. We signified our delight at the prospect, settled back more comfortably in our arm- chairs, and the barrister went on: — It is my custom to get away from London for a few days in the month of May. Upon this particular occasion I ran down to the south coast to a little-known seaside resort. My chief amusement was in taking long walks in the country. One evening, as dusk set in, I found myself some few miles from where I waa staying. I felt a little nervous, for I was far away from a road, and I had not too good a. knowledge of the country. With the aid of my compass I continued my walk. Darkness had come, and I made my way with difficulty. To my relief I spied in the distance a light, and as I approached nearer I could just make out the dark outlines of a house. My way was blocked by a high iron railing. I continued round it until I came to a gate. I struck a. match and saw the bottom of an electric bell, which I pressed, for I was anxious to ascertain the direction of my home. I I waited a few moments, and then rang a second time; but there was no answer. A third time I rang, with the same result. I thought that, perhaps, there might -be another entrance, so I walked on round the railings. On the other side they approached closer to the house, but I could see no signs of another gate. Ahead of me I saw a bright light stream- ing from a wide window, which lighted up the lawn in front. I approached as near aa possible. I could see quite plainly into the room. A man and a woman were seated at a dinner- table. They were both in evening dress. He was clean-shaven, with well-cut features, while she had the face of a goddess. Suddenly he arose from the table, and addressed her vehemently. Her answer was a smile. Then she, too,. arose, and they stood facing one another in the centre of the room. By his gestures he was evidently in anger. She answered softly, her face filled with pleading. She knelt to him, but he pushed her away roughly. The woman roee proudly and returned scorn for scorn. He grasped her by the wrist. and she struggled fiercely. A look of mad passion came on to his face. He turned toi the table and grasped a knife. A thrust at her bosom and she fell to the ground, i seemed to hear her shriek in D17.. ears. I rushed at the railings and tried toi climb them, but they were too high. I ran round to the gate, but was unable to gain admittance there. Then I returned to the point from which I had witnessed the ghastly scene; but the light was no longer in the window. I went back to the gate and rang the bell again. Then I yelled, but with no result. Finally I made up my mind and ran along the path as quickly as I could. This took me to a road which I recognised. I was in good training, and it was not long before I arrived at the inn where I was staying. I at once went for the police and told them my tale. I gave them my card and told them I was a barrister. The inspector asked me a few questions. Come,' he said quietly. -I will order the dog-cart." "In a few minutes we were driving furiously in the direction of the house where the crime v-as committed. The gate was reached at last. We rang the bell again, but with no result. Then we gave a combined Halloa!' and a servant ran to us. He conducted U8 to the door. In the htJl I saw the man standing-the assassin. 'The wretched electric bell is always getting out of order,' he began quietly. "'That's the man" I shouted to the inspector. 'Arrest him!' The assassin looked at us in astonishment. On what charge, may I ask?' he said at last. "'Murder!' I cried hoarsely. 'I saw you commit the deed.' Are you mad?' he asked in amazed tones. But anger quickly left his face, and a smile took its place. Come into the smoking room, gentlemen,* he said, leading the way. "'Now let me hear your account of the dreadful deed I have committed.' I marvelled at his coolness, but did as he asked. When I had finished he rang the bell, which was answered by a maid. Ask your mistress to please come here. Marie.' We waited. My heart was in my month. In a few minutes my goddess, my murdered woman, came tripping into the room. She looked at us curiously. 'This is my wife. I am Philip Cranston* —I started, for it was the name of a prominent actor—' and this is my wife. Pauline Seymour. We are producing a new play next week, and have run down here for a- holiday. At dinner to-night my wife suggested a new reading of one of the scenes, and we rehearsed it at once—that's all.' "Well, I did feel a fool. At the present moment I number the Cranstona amongst my dearest friends. But still there is no end of chaff to be put up with at their hands."

A more fascinating, more entrancing, and more mysterious story than Two Men from Kimberley" it would be difficult to instance, wide as is the field of sensational fiction. Once the reader holds the key to the mystery everything is apparent, but the key is so cunningly with- held that the sharpest reader may be defied to solve the problem. This astonishingly vivid novel has the great attraction of gripping the reader at the very onset, so that he or she is, so to speak, up to the waist in the mystery before the opening instal- ment has been read. Thence- forward there is no standing still to think, but adventure follows adventure with astonishing rapidity right on to the astounding climax. "TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY" will be the most eagerly-followed serial issued for many a day. Look out, then, for TWO MEN FROM KIMBERLEY," TO-MORROW, SATURDAY.,
THE COOK ASKED NO QUESTIONS
THE COOK ASKED NO QUESTIONS 'Twere a new Governor of Newfoundland, and he were shocking careful of the sealers' health," began the old sealing captain, his deep-set eyes twinkling. The night afore the North Star left Sen John's for the ice he came aboard t' inquire what for medicine chist we had. You ought to have a ship's doctor aboard her with two hundred men shipped,' says he. Who gives out the medicine ?' The cook, o' course,' I answers. f Bat; I'm sartin o' one thing, Governor,' I says, there's nothin' there that's pisen.' How do you know?' he asks, pretty sharp. 'Well,' I answers, 'a man comes runnin' to the cook, and he says, My chum's sick, and I want some medicine for he." The cook never aaks no questions as to what's ailin.' He grabs up the first bottle he gits his 'and on and pours out some in a cup. If it don't do the man's chum no good, he oomes back and the cook pours something out of another bottle, and so on till he strikes something that 'elps him. That's why I know there's nothin' pizen in that chifft, or the cook would 'ave killed 'arf of *Omt-eaty ▼Vices Lippmcott's Msraxine."
