I"TWO MEN FROM KtMBERLEY,"
I "TWO MEN FROM KtMBERLEY," By H. BARTON BAKER, Author of Robert Miner, Anarchist," Stafford, a Romance," Ac. I PART THE THIRD. I Within the Shadow of Death. I CHAPTER VII I.-Continued, The Hunched-backed Sailor. As he drew near to the farm a- dog began to bark furiously. It was a large, rambling premises, however, and avoiding the neigh- gourhood of the irate canine, he found a shed at some distance from the house; it was probably used by shepherds, for there was a thick layer of hay upon the ground; casting himself upon this ready-made bed he fell asleep in less than five minutes. He was awakened by the bright rays of the rising sun, which shone through the opening of the hut right upon his face. He sat up and rubbed his eyes; he had been dreaming all night of Bosina and Lilian, as they were in the old days, and for a few seconds he could not recollect where he was. The voices of men close by recalled him to himself; he rose, and went out into the open. The men, farm labourers, were leaning over a gate talking; they looked startled and suspicious at the sight of a stranger. I lost the train from Newton Abbot to Moreton Hampstead last night, started to walk it, and, I suppose, lost my way. I was told to make for Bovey Tracey; am I near it?" inquired Vanstone. I should think you have lost your way," said one of the fellows, grinning. You be farther off than when you started; you be nearer Buckland-on- the-Moor than Bovey Tracey, and a main hard! job it 11 be for 'ee to find the road, it's all cross-country. Vanstone's face fell. "Do you think you could get me a drink of milk and a. hunk of bread up at the farm? I can pay for it," he said. "F&s, I dessay I could," said the man. Vanstone gave him sixpence, and presently he brought back a large jug of milk, a big hunk of brown bread, and a piece of boiled bacon. And upon these our pedestrian made a hearty meal, at the end of which he de- clared himself fit for anything and any dis- tance. In the meantime the two men had been doing their best to direct him, but the strange dialect words they used, their inability to understand that farmer this and farmer that's homestead, and this combe and that wood were not known to everybody, rendered their directions very confusing, and the only tan- gible knowledge that Vanstone obtained was that Bovey Tracey lay to the north-east of him. Early as it was, the heat of the sun was already oppressive, and a hot wind was blow- ing from the south; all the mist, however, had cleared, and the sky was a deep, cloud- less blue. It was impossible to cross direct from west to north-east, for here the way was stopped by a broad, deep stream; there the ground sank hundreds of feet into a hollow, again it rose hundreds of feet up to one of the grtfat weird tors, so that he had constantly to make circumambulations; there were no roads, only faintly-marked tracks, which suddenly came to an end, or branched away in quite a different direction to that he ought to pursue. His only guide was the sun. The only living creatures that he encountered were the native ponies; little clusters of houses nestling down in the dense foliage of the rich combes once or twice came within his ken, but they always lay far out of his track. The heat was becoming intolerable, there was a heavy, langorous feeling in the air; over the sea the blue was changing to a murky grey, that was slowly advancing land- wards. A storm was brewing. Worn out with heat, fatigue, and irritability, and anathematising the precipitancy that had brought him into this dilemma, Vanstone cast himself upon the ground to rest for a while. A thick haze overspread' the sun, and the dis- tant muttering of thunder rolled through the death-like stillness of the air. I CHAPTER IX. I On the Brink of the Torrent. After the dreary wet day which had con- fined them to the hotel, Lilian and Denver were rejoiced to be awakened next morning by a brilliant sun shining out of & clear blue sky, and, feeling all the better for their enforced rest, prepared for an early start on their proposed expedition. Packing their luggage, with directions that it should be forwarded on to Exeter, first by omnibus to Moreton Hampstead and thence by rail, they paid their bill, breakfasted, and a little before eight quitted the hotel. As they passed the bar they stopped to wish the hostess good-bye, and to ask the landlord some questions about the route they intended to take across the wildest part of the moor to Ashburton. Standing at the bar drinking rum-and-milk waa a hunch-backed sailor with a. black patch over one eye, who said he had just walked in from Moreton Hampstead. and had been asking the landlady if she ooald accommo- date him for the day and night. "You'll have a hot walk," said the landlord to Lilian, "and be tired enough by the time you get to Ashburton." "Oh. we have plenty of time to do it in," said Lilian, "and we have provided ourselves with eatables and drinkables to keep up our strength," pointing to a well-filled wallet that hung at Denver's side. "Minds you don't lose yourselves on the moor; it's a queer place for strangers." "I have a pocket compass and a good map," said Denver, "and I don't think we can go far wrong. The landlord smiled sceptically. "It do seem very easy, but even folks as has been born and bred on the moor have strayed sometimes and got into a quandary." He walked to the door with them. "Phew, it's uncommon hot; I shouldn't wonder if it didn't work up to a thunderstorm," he said. "Good-bye, sir, good-bye, miss, and I wish you a pleasant walk." The hunch-backed sailor had drawn back when Lilian and Denver came along, and the passage was so dim to anyone coming out of the brilliant light of the morning that, though they were conscious of a presence, they did not notice the man at all. As the two passed out into the street he said to the landlady, "I'm only a poor sailor, and I think your charges would be too high for me, so I'll try and get something cheaper." "Yes, I think you had better; indeed, I don't think we could accommodate you," answered the landlady quickly. She did not like the look of the man. He drank up his rum and milk, lit a. short black pipe, and lurched out of the house at the heels of Denver and Lilian. Never had the two lovers felt more free from care or depression, or more full of joy. ful anticipations, than on that glorious June morning. All restraint, all misunderstanding between them had vanished, and they had plighted, their troth. [ Own they left all traolt darkened by the dense, overhanging trees, the rushing streams, the rugged rocks of thr great moor, two units in the vast, lonely landscape; the luminous atmosphere, thO perfume of the wild flowers that strewed their path, were intoxicating, and hand clasped in hand they sauntered on in a silence too sweet for words, loitering, or standing stil4 or sitting down when they came to some spot that struck their fancy. Then there was the al fresco lunch, one tiny cup to drink out of, one plate to eat out of, yet never was meal more supremely enjoyed. Oh, if this sort of thing could only go on for ever," murmured Lilian, as she lay upon one elbow, her hand supporting her head; that we might never again be confined within ugly stone walls, never again be stifled by a London fog. Is there any delight in the worM that can compare with this? How it rouses up one's primitive nature, that joy in perfect freedom, in escaping from the con- ventions of civilised life, the joys of child- hood. I feel quite a throwback at the present moment, as if the mummifying wraps of civilisation had fallen from me, and I have gone back to primitive humanity. I suppose it was always like this in Paradise, and to think it was all lost for a paltry a £ ple. How disgusting!" It has never been lost," said Denver, taking her head between his hands and kiss- ing her; ^wherever love truly is it can create a Paradise. Can imagination conceive a Paradise more perfect than this?" Mine cannot," she murmured. Her eyes closed and she fell into a drowse. With her head clasped in his arms he gazed down upon the beautiful face, flushed with the heat, and smiling with the ineffable happiness that had lulled her to sleep-gazed until the sweet picture grew dim and the day faded into darkness. He awoke with a violent start, laid Lilian's head upon the turf, and rose to his feet. grasping the thick knotted stick that he always carried in these lonely walks. He could not account for this sudden nervoua alarm. He bad no remembrance of dreaming; he seemed to have been aroused out of perfect obliviousness, but with an instinctive sense of danger. He looked around. A grey haze had crept over the sun during his brief doze, the aspect of the landscape had changed; it was no longer golden and joyous, but sombre and melancholy. No living creature was to be seen. Yet a tree, that inclined almost horizon- tally over the ravine a few yards from where, they lay, concealed the crouching figure of the hunch-backed sailor. He had followed the lovers with the stealthy cunning of &a Indian scout, while they, wrapped in them- selves and in sensuous delights, were utterly unconscious of the deadly enemy who was tracking them, and who had had many opportunities of executing his cWIGr. purpose. Why, then, had he not struck? It was the strange likeness of Miss Vanstone to the dead Lilian that unnerved him; it seemed as though the dead woman, whom he had so terribly wronged, stood between him and the living; if he killed Denver he must kill his companion to make all safe, and it would be like stabbing the dead woman in her grave. Had it been a twelvemonth or more before this time they would now have been lying dead upon the moor, and he on his way to safety; but though pitiless and murderoua in thought as ever, he had of late, as he confessed to Agatha, lost something of his old iron nerve and confidence. Perhaps visions haunted him; perhaps the dead do not always rest so quietly in their graves as we would fain believe they do. When they sat down to lunch he orawled along just below the top of the ravine until he was opposite them, and then lay watching. He saw them drop asleep, then, nerving himself, knife in hand, he wriggled snake- like along the ground. Had Denver, when he first awoke, cast his eyes in that direction he must have caught sight of the would-be murderer; but his back was towards the ravine, and before he turned round Marston was in his hiding-place again. As Denver sprang to his feet Lilian uttered a cry, and the next moment was beside him with a frightened look upon her face. (To be continued).
REMINDED HIM OF HOME
REMINDED HIM OF HOME It was one of those early-morning cars, with all of the passengers in a. hurry and the con- ductor nervous. They were making good time until they struck a downtown street with a wagon loaded with hay on the tracks. The motor-man approached it cautiously, until his fender almost touched the rural team. Then silently he allowed his car to creep along be- hind the hay wagon. The passengers began to get nervous during the first block; the second block found them mad, and the third had them kicking. Still the motor-man crept along, not so much as ringing his bell. Finally the conductor went on to the front platform and exclaimed: Say, why don't you ring your bell and get that hay wagon out of the way? I just can't 'do it," answered the motor* man; it reminds me so of home."
HOW WATER TASTES
HOW WATER TASTES This is a Texas story. There was gathered at one of the county towns the usual crowd for the county court, which included the Judge, the District Attorney, Sheriff, clerk, a number of lawyers, and on this particular occasion a young army officer. Well, they celebrated to rather a late hour on the first night, and when bed time came it was found that most of them had to sleep in the. one large room called in the West the "school section," because everything in the school- section lands in the early days belonged to everybody. About daylight the next morning the District Attorney crawled out and found a pitcher of ice water. As he poured it down his throat it fairly hissed. After a long draught he stopped and said: "No d-d sober fool knows how good water tastes."
