[ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.] r A BLACK REVENGE. By FLORENCE WARDEN, Author of "The Secret of Princess Pauf," "The House on the Marshc. 1 I CHAPTER XXVIII. Lettice did not immediately follow Jane Len- wade, when she came downstairs, being, indeed, in too great a state of agitation to care to meet Dr. Brownlow's eyes until she had had time to recover her composure. But the door of her room having been left open she heard a. good deal of what passed between Jane and the dootor; Jane's joyful cry of thanks which told her that he was ready to accompany her to the insurance office; his going out and coming in again, his exclamation, "A telegram!" and Jane's half frantic utterances on hearing the mes- sage read out to her. Lettice, not unnaturally full of suspicion, and in possession of more eelf-oommand than was poor Jane at the receipt of the news, ran down the stairs to get further particulars; but before she reached the hall-door Jane, in her eagerness to find Don, had already run down the steps and out at the gate. Lettice, with her cry of "Jane, Jane, wait a moment!" came to the door just ae her uncle was closing it. "Let me pass! I want to speak to her!" cried she hoarsely. But Dr. Brownlow, smiling, but firm, would not let her go. "It's of no use in the world," said he. "The poor girl's gone quite crazy with excitement, and she wouldn't even wait to look out a train. We've heard from Don Daresbury at last." Lettice did not listen, did not answer. See- ing at once that to get past him was impos- sible, she turned and ran into the dining- room. which was in the front of the house. But, although the window was open, and she leaned out and cried aloud, "Jane, don't go!" the eager, excited girl had got too far away, and the words were lost upon her. ) Meanwhile Dr. Brownlow followed his niece into the room, laughing at her good- humouredly. "What do you want to say to her?" asked he. What are you getting so excited about? You might guess that nothing would stop her now 4he has heard from Don Daresbury at last. I only wish," he wenit on, that he were more worthy of her devotion!" Lettice, who was revolving half-a-dozen ideas rapidly in her mind, looked at him askance. She noted something real, some- thionc poignaot under his forced good humour, and guessed that it was jealousy. For just one moment she Celt for him & human sym- pathy, a genuine fellow-feeling; the next, this emotion was sw&llowed up in suspicion. "Duniton," she gmid. Where's th"?" A. shade of annoyance crossed has face. Dun ton!" echoed be. There's a DuntoD, Dunton Green, in Kemt, near Sevenoaks, I think." "But it can't be that Dunton. She said something about lAverpool-streeL That's the station for the East ODaat, ish'.t it?" < "I believe so." There wifla paose; then Lettkje asked and- denly, How did the news oorme?" A telegram came & moment aeo-" A telegram! I never saw the boy." How could you, when you were on the stairs?" said he impatiently. "I ran down the steps and met him." Yes, I saw you run down the steps, but I didn't see you meet any boy," said has niece, who was strung up to a pitch of excitement which made her daring. May I see the tele- gram P" asked she, as her uncle, with some appearance of indignation tut her persistency, went towards the door. I gave, it to Miss Lenwade." No, you didn't. She asked for ft, bat you didn't give it her." He turned round at the door. Rig face wa6 very pale. and there was an angry glitter in his eyes. And I don"t. mean to give it to you. I am not going to be insulted by a girl, and your questions, your remarks are insurtim. Until you have recovered your senses, and your manners, you had better remain by yourself. And, like a schoolmaster, speaking to a naughty pupil, the doctor, who was deeply offended, went out of the room, Shutting the door sharply behind him. Lettice was trembling from head to foot. The room seemed to spin round her, and she had to sit quietly on the nearest chair for a few minutes to recover herself. She had bad strength and spirit enough to defy her uncle, on the impulse of the moment, to question him, to eivetiim the lie direct. But now, when the effort was made, and she was left to reflect upon, what she had done. a. horrible sense of the loneliness of her posi- tion, of the frightfid abyss wb'oh was begin- ning to yawn between her and bar only living guardian, came over her, and reduced her to a state of nervous prostration, in which she loosed to her peace with bbn. if it were only for the time, to throat back these dreadful doubts, to-stifle her fears, to tell her- self that Bhefaad made mountains OUt, Of mote- Mils, sad that it was she wbo was in the wrong. But is the midst of these sensations, she beard the sound of the dbet<Wis footsteps going very rapidly and eoftly alone the ball, and she ran to the door, with a great curiosity upon her. It was her Intention to turn the bamdlo a* quietly that he should not hear bee, and to confront him suddenly, to see where he was going to in soak a stealthy fashion. But before she had turned it, the handle seemed to slide out of her wet fingers, as she beard the front door open softly and then shut with very little more noise. Unole! cried she, and with another effort she taied to open the door. And then she discovered that.be was looked in! Meanwhile Jane had got into-ar hansom, and was en her way to Liverpool Street, scarcely able to see for the tears which would rise to her eyes at the thought that she was about to see Don once more. But then be was all What did that meant And this Mrs. 0Mel, the mad muman. who had said Chat, by Dn. Brawnlosr's orders, she nnrsed patients, whom she "put out of their pain, this woman, who. as Jane believed, had had something to do with poor Marianfe sudden death, was the person who had sent the telegram! Jane suddenly remembered that she had not got the telegram, and for a, moment she was half inclined to return to Ghent House, and ask Tor it. But the fear of losing the next train to Dunton checked her, and made her decide to go on with her journey without it. After all, if the doctor had read the message out correctly, and no doubt upon this subject had as yet entered Jane's miud-obe know an that there was to be known. If there had been any further address than Just "Dunton," be would have read it out. And Dunton was, she believed, only an uiringawrtant tittle village on s the Suffolk coast, where it would not be dSBk cult to discover a stranger. What troubbed bar tfc mm& ww a* qam ,4{. "4i"" lb4 this illness of Don's, and whether the mas sage meant more than it said. A low cry broke from her lips as the ho(^ rible thought flashed into her mind that Don might, perhaps, at that very moment be lying dead, and that the telegram might ba1 only a preparation for this news. Her grief and impatience grew almost unen- durable when, on reaching Liverpool Street' Station, she found she had just missed a traia which started for Diaham, the nearest. station to Dunton, at 3.25, and that she would have to wait until five o'clock for the next. An hour and a half to wait! What should she do with herself? How waa she to bear that terrible delay? Then a thought flashed through her mind. The principal office of the insurance com- pany with which the insurance on her life 1 had been effected was in the City, and not very far off. Why should she not go there on her own account, and ask the questions: which would settle the vexed point one way or the other ? Even as the idea. suggested itself, however,^ Jane shrank from it; she thought the cer- tainty of a crime having been oommitted would be more than she could bear. But then so much depended upon the knowiedge, whether Dr. Brownlow was really the kind, considerate friend her mother still believed him to be, or a scoundrel—there was. U(P- other word for it--whope friendship was danger, and whose kindneas a. snare. And the matter concerned Don, his inte- rests, his safety, perhaps his life. Even as she hailed a hansom and got into it Jane's heart reproached her for her doubts of the doctor. It was strongly- characteristic of the influence the handsome, gentle-eyed man had over his acquaintances, that their doubts of him melted away, in spite of their better judgment, when once they found them-, selves again witliin sight of his brown eyas,-) within hearing of his mellow voice, and that the effect of his presence was felt for a time' even after it had been withdrawn. It was, therefore, with a guilty feeling that she was disloyal, ungrateful, struggling witln the common-sense which told her she bed a right to be satisfied, that Jane got out ot: the hansom and went into the insuranoe office. She felt quite relieved to be told that the manager was out, as that gave her an exoase: for not goIng further into the matter that day. And she was turning away from the counter where she had made the inquiry for Mr. Brewster, when one of the clerks nudged another, and whispered something to him which made him look more closely at the visitor. Jane had not reached the door, hurrrmc away like a. guilty creature, when a. youto man came up with her, and, looking at has with a peculiar intentnese, which sent tha blood rushing to her face, and made IIIIIe heart- beat at a mtld rate, said: -1' "Mr. Brewster is out, madam, but lie.. Callinghajn will see you." Jane, torn between her wish to know, md her dread of the consequences, hesitated* stammered. Oh, I don't know Mr. Callingham," 8ha faltered. I think I'd rather come again when I can see the gentleman I have seen before." But although she hurried quickly away from her interlocutor, she did not escape; at the. outer door she found another clerk, eftai more courteous, but also more determined than the first one. Mr. CaJlingham will not keep yon mam than two minutes," he said. That was all. But Jane felt that she was trapped, and with Che feeling there euaa upon her in all its force the knowledge that her suspicions were correct, and that she herself might perhaps be detained, arreaftad, as one of the guilty parties in the fraudulent action. But, of course, now that the wontt had cume, she recovered her outward composure. little, feeling that the decisive step bad been taken, and there was no going bade. A minute later she waa in the secretary's, office, and a very polite, middle aged genttat man was asking what message he ooutd. for her to Mr. Brewster. Jane did not take the chair he affined, bnt leaning across the table, and looking him-AaB in the face, said in a hoarse voice: I wanted to know—I waa it to kiiuw ■■■ whether your office has paid the money dug. at the death of a Miss Jane Brownlow ts lnr uncle, Dr. Brownlow?"
