[By Special Arrangement.- Oopyright.] THE LITTLE VIRAGO, BY SCOTT AINSLIE I Tall and glim, and straight as a young pop-Iar. with shortly-cropped hair just touch- ing the collar of her faded black gown at the neck, and tumbling almost into her black eyes in front, to be swept back ever and anon by an impatient hand; with a firmly-eat mouth, revealing, when she emiled. the strong white teeth; a nose somewhat retrousse, and a sudden, petulant mode of speech that was somewhat disconcerting to a stranger; that was "the Virago at No. g." Truth to say, she rejoiced in the title; it vra-a distinctive, and ehe felt tha.t. she deserved it; it summed her up so very tensely and com- pletely. Other girls might live in the odour of dull domestic sanctity, of Sabbath church- going righteousness; for her was reserved the proud privilege of standing on a pinnacle of supposed wickedness, to which virtmoue mothers might exultingly call the attention I of their broods, by way of awful example. Eer Christian nrune-if suoh aa appellation is possible—was Janet, and she resided at No. 14. in a small street in one of the poorer districts of Cbelsea-a district stamped by the numerous rusty bell-handles on the sides of its doorposts, and by the dissipated-looking milk-cans to be seen hanging on the spikes of its area railings—a district which yet had pretensions, in a certain way, to a gpecies of genUlity. At No. 14 resided alao Mr. and Mrs. Tomkins, and a considerable number of smaller species of humanity, who bore, by right of birth, the same name. Janet was a sort of distant rela- tion—an orpliaii-who, in return for many duties cheerfully and light-heartedly per- formed, received a somewhat meagre board and a decidedly sordid lodging. Mr. Tomkins was spoken oi in hushed voice in the neighbourhood, as a commission agent," and it was generally believed that he was "prepared to deal in the most extraordi- nary things, and in every conceivable market, if he could only get the commission. He was a little, mild-mannered man, who had evidently decided long ago that the thing called life was a puzzle, and that it was use- less to attempt its solution. Mrs. Tomkins was a lady who had, in some remote period, been handsome, and who, to the discomfiture of her neighbours, still tra-ded on the remem- brance: it was generally whispered that she posaesed a small patrimony of her own. It appeared to have been by general consent of the neighbours that the girl Janet had earned her extraordinary title. As a matter of fact, her daily drudgery weighed so heavily upon her, despite her cheerfulness, that, pos- sessing a superabundance of animal spirits, it became an absolute necessity that she should find some vent for the demon of pure fun, and mischief, which lurked within her. She had been for years at No. 14, but, from the earliest times, she had been a terror to to her more straightlaced neighbours. When a mere girl of twelve years. the complaints in regard to her were many and frequent. Should some unlucky neighbour offend her by look. or word, or deed, her vengeance was swift and sure. Windows would be discovered brdken—asaall, but obnoxious offspring would return to the parental neet covered with mud, having been quite accidentally jostled into handy puddles—in fact, there appeared to be no end to her resources. Added to all this was the absolutely fearless use of a quick and ready wit in wordy warfare; a length of limb and swiftness of movement that defied pur- suit. Yet, had but one of those who saw only the flash of the black eyes, or heard only the caustic tongue, known anything of the inner beauty of the girl, something better and finer might perchance have been found—a some- thing better and finer that was hidden beneath the girl's semi-savagery, as a thing that would not be understood, and of which she, personally, was almost ashamed. Sometimes, in softened moments, she thought of it all, with some degree of bitterness, and with flaming cheeks; thought of some shameless remark that she had made, with almost a longing in her heart that she could re-call it. She wan- e-lered, sometimes, OlD sunny mornings, out into the more fashionable streets, having in her charge some younger member of the house of Tomkins, and stood wat-ching- the delicate and well-dresecd women who passed her, hearing like some quiet reproach the refined and well-modulated tones of their voices that floated to her. For a day or two afterwards she would be absolutely subdued; taunting small boys might shout and dance about her, but Sne would sail through them, with head erect-, calmly indifferent; until sud- denly the old passionate temper would blaze forth, and some unlucky urc-hin, more auda- cious tlhan the rest, would be swooped down upon and made a terrible example of to his fellows. And then the old life would be taken up again, reckiessay and defiant, and the virago at No. 14 hold sway in all lurid splen- dour of mischief. But the truer heart of the girl was touched on occasions, in spite of herself. On one summer evening she came upon a group of boys, on a piece of brick-strewn waste, and pelting a small and wretched- looking mongrel dog. In an instant she had rushed in upon them and scattered them, and the yelping, tortured animal was in her arms. "You little fiends!" she cried, stooping sud- denly, and pitching a half-brick at the nearest boy, with a girl's crver-ha-nded throw, that fortunately sent it wide of its mark. "I'd like to be a bit nearer to you. Poor little chap!" this to the dog, as she laid her chin on its head—"come an. then; although I'm sure I don't know what to do with you." she added ruefully. However, she took it home with her. and its soft little body. nestled in the hollow of her arm, and the plaintive cold little nose, thrust sometimes into her palm, brought a strange light of tenderness to her eyes as she walked I on. She was stealing quickly througb the house, on her way to the attic on the topmost I floor, that was her own special sanctum, when she was suddenly confronted by Mrs. Tom- I kins. Heally, ycxu are most trying," said tbat lady, pettllautly. You know the state of my Henes-you know that the least thing upsete me—and you stay out until this hour, and the1 Children crying all over the place, in every room, and fighting on the stairs, and every other horrid thin-g-and-why-what have you got there? Oh! take the little beast out-taolreo it out-at once:" The girl &tood quite still, confronting her. At any other time she might ha.ve passively obeyed; but perhaps at that moment the house looked more unsavoury and grimy even than usual; the looming prospect of quarrel- some children %ppeared the more trying. Per- haps, too, the warm little body next her own nerved her. She spoke quickly, with a little I etaanp of her foot. It ?sn't a litUe beaat. The poor little beggar waa being killed by some boys. 1- "How da.re von sa.iJ Mns. Tomkins. "Yon I strangely forget yourself and your position. I Put it in the street a,¡ tmce." "I shan't," eaid the girl, with aaiodMsr stamp of her foot. If it goes in the street, I'll go too. It's badly hurt, and hungry, and—" There were a few more rapid words OIl either side. It ended by Janet striding down the narrow paanace, opaamg the street fooc*. l and disappearing into the night, with the mongrel still in her arms. And Mrs. Tomkins fulfilled her destiny as a woman with nerves, and very properly went off into hysterics. The girl's new and unaccustomed freedom charmed her, for a time, at least. It wae a hot summer night-a night that even, in tihe sordid streets, breathed of country hillsides and limes, lying calm and peaceful beneath the softened touch of the moonlight. She walked about for a time, with the dog held closely to her, and presently 6at down on a doorst-ep, in a street near that in which No. 14 was situated, and rested her chin on the dog, crooning a little song to herself as sho sat. The sound of a voice roused her. and, realising that someone was speaking to her, she looked up. A tall man, in a ehabby soil, and with an old straw hat on the back of hit head, was standing before her, with an amused expression in his blue eyes. His hands were thrust deeply into his pockets, and his legs were planted very widely apart. He was quite young, and there wae an almost boyish frankness about him that was refreshing. Is anything the matter," he was saying. No, no, nothing," she replied, shortly. "Anything wrong with the dog?" he asked. at least, I don't think so," she Baid, speaking more slowly, and putting her faoe down to the small creature on her lap. "He'. been badly treated, and he's hungry. Ain't you, poor chap?"—this last to the dog. "Then, why don't you Jake him home and feed him, and not expose him; as well as your- self, to the rude blasts of Boreas?" said the man. "I don't understand yon," she said, glancing up at him. "You don't think I'm such a fool as to be sitting here, if I'd got a home to take him to, do you? And mind your own business; I'm very comfortable. Go away!" The man laughed suddenly. then whistled, and laughed again. "And will you sit here, oh! obdurate maiden with the bow-wow, until the strong arm of an unsympathetic nine- teenth century lictor bidts you begoneP" "I don't know what you're driving at, but I shall sit here just as long as I please," the aid impatiently. "And when you don't please?" he asked, smiling imperturbably, with his head on one side. "I shall go somewhere else. Anything else?" "You're a queer sort of girl. Why don't you go home, to the paternal roof-tree.?" "Can't you talk plain English?" "Why don't you cut home to bed?" he almost shouted. "That's better," she answered. laughing in spite of herself. "Because they won't let me in with the dog. and I won't leave him in the street." "Oh, sad—sad!" he exclaimed, removing one hand from his pocket to strike an attitude. "Stony-hearted father—afraid-I-shail-have-tho- carpet-soiled mother-l know—I "Then you're wrong; I haven't got a father, and I haVen't got a mother. Try again, old boy. "An orphan!" be cried. "Metaphorically, I embrace you. 1, too. know not the touch of a mother's hand or of a father's slipper. Bui, my dear child," be added more seriously, "you can't sit out here all ni-,ht-dog or no dog." 'I won't leave him in the streets," phe said. firmly. He scratched his head dubiously for a moment, pushing the old straw hat further over his forehead in the process, then ex- claimed, suddenly- Look here. I'll take the little beggar home, and look after him. Ah, look not distrustful, fair maiden." striking another attitude; "I'll look well after him. fear not. Honour bright. I will, and you shall come and see him when you like. No, he won't be a bit of trouble." She gratefully put the dog in his arms, and he ran off as if to avoid her thanks. But in a moment he came running back again. I'm Charlie Barry," he said, pantingly; "and I'm supposed to be an artist. I live in Tudor- street, No. 56. Come and see the dog." And he was off again before she could speak. That was the commencement of a friendship that wa.s the best thing her life had known; that was, .indeed, life itself. She would wander into the great bare room, wherein he worked, a-a often a-s possible, and sit there. quisigy watching him. He was always cheerful, his sayings were always droll; for her part, she thought there never had lived, or ever would live, so great a genius. His crudest elroru had a charm for her that never lessened. The dog was always with him. and her gratitude to him, for so loyally fulfilling his promise, was indeed great. It is, perhaps, scarcely necessary to a&y that she received no harm from her solitary friendship with him. He was, in all things. too frankly boyish—too sweet and pure- minded—to have destroyed her purity, by word or deed. But she grew to love him with a passionate devotion that wa.s in keeping with her turbulent nature. She told him once that she had been in the habit of spending ajiy odd moments she could snatch in the quiet of an old church near at hand, whose doors were usually open. It isn't that it makes me good," the explained. If a person came in, I think I should run away. And I don't even pray. But it calms me down a bit, and thinp don't, rub me up the wrong way, so much. I caa figlit them down there." He nodded and went on with his work. Success was coming to him slowly, and be was beginning to make money. But. in the midst of his hard work, he fell ill. Then it was that the house of Tomkins knew her no more; she never left his bedside, night or day, saVlJ only to snatch a few moments of rest, on the hard floor. at his feet. For a long time he knew nothing of the service she rendered him: in his delirium, he had only some indistinct idea of a faElhar fa?e -Lh" was ever near his own of strong young arms, that raised him up; of tender hands, that fed nim and smoothed his pillows. For the people of the house cared nothing, and, in fact, the girl would not admit a eoul into the room, save only the doctor, who probably thonght' sEe was the patient's sister. When at last the crisis had come, and had gone bFv, and he opened his eyes, and smiled weakly at her. she fell on her knees beside the bed. covering his thin hand with passionate kisses, and laughing and sobbing in the same breath, for very joy that he was given back to her. She came in one day, eoon after that, from a tiny room, she had persuaded the landlady, to let her have. at the very top of the house, and stopped dead on the threshold; seated beside the bed was a young and fashionably- dressed girl chatting with Charlie Barry. Before either of them had seen her, she slipped out again, and walked steadily down the stairs and out of the house, with the scalding tears in her eyes and a lump in her throat. Thereafter she kept a way from him; he had his friends now—swells, as she bitterly termed them—and U. did not matter. She got a situation in the neighbourhood, and worked hard. and tried to sing at her work, and to forget him. For his part, poor Charlie waited, and waited, in vain; the whole plaoe seemed blank and awful spot, wit/bout that black- eyed, shabby-looking figure flitting about it. A fortnight passed, aDd then, one sunshiny afternoon, he crept out to try and find ber. With a remembrance of her words, he went to the old church, and pushed open the door and entered. She was coming straight towards him, and she stopped, as if uncertain what to do. But he v.-ent forward slowly, and held out his b^ds. She kept her own resolutely behind her. "What's the matter?" "Nothing," she snapped, fiercely. "You don't want me now; you've got all your own friends. Let me pass." I will not." he said, resolutely. I do want you: there is no other woman on the wide earth who is so much to me; there is no other whom I love." She looked at him keenly for a moment; then her eyes softened, and she drew a step nearer to him; then suddenly the proud defiant head was bowed, and she burst into a passion of tears. He drew her into hie arms, and soothed her there, and kissed her. for the first time sincp he had known her. And they went out again into the sunlight presently, happily hacd-in-hand, like children seeking a new world. (The End.)
