( [By Special Arrangement—Copyright] THE ROMANCE OF A SPiNNiNG WHEEL i By VIOLET E. MITCHELL. The kerosene lamp in Miss Hetty Bonnet's little sitting-room was turned up to its fullest extent, and in the centre of the floor, kneeling before a black, tin trunk was Miss Hetty her- self, while by her side, regarding the opera- tion of packirg with the familiarity of old and privileged friendship, sat an immense yeliow oat. There was an air of cheerfulness about the apartment not wholly due to the presence of its bright-eyed owner, whose quaintly braided hair, and old-fashioned, flowered merino gown were suggestive of rosemary and lavender, but also to the wide-mouthed fireplace, with iti polished braes and irons, and to the tall clock in the corner, whose smiling face had placidly looked down upon the same green and led carpet for the last twenty yea,rs. "I declare" exclaimc-d Miss Hetty, laying in the trunk with tender care her very best dress of purple delaine, "it does seem like a dream, Tom, the idee of me ever gettin' to see New York. And after wantin' to go all my life, to think of this chance oomin', so unexpected. Ain't I glad I'd saved up that fifty dollar I My My! There'll be lots of things to tell yon when I git back." She arose as she spoke, her fa-ce aglow vith pleasurable excitement, and taking down fiom a closet a large piece of grey calico, threw it lightly over a cherry-wood spinning wheel that stood near the hearth, and whose fluffy ball of flaz had been the one plaything l,eld sacred from Tom's kittenhood. "I must'ent forget." murmured she, "to cover up grandmother's old wheel: it would catch a eight of dust while I'm gciie." Just at this moment a vibrant knock on the front door caused Miss Bonnet to start, but, holding the kerosene lamp in her hand and closely shadowed by the cat, she proceeded to admit a bustling, red-visaged woman, whose whole appearance was in striking contrast to Miss Hetty's spick-aud-spanncss. AVell, Hetty; how near ready be you?" inquired the visitor, seating herself with scant ceremony upon the closed lid of the tin trunk and looking about her with vulgar curiosity. Got your grandmother's old wheel covered up, h'aint you? My bllds I never could see why you keep that humly old rubbidge in your settin' room. If "tvrae a pictur', now, or a bit of statooary, tbere'd be some sense, bu tr-" She paused for a moment to eye Tom, who, with hunched-up back, walked off in disdain. He had a very poor opinion of Mrs. Wilkins, anyway. Well," continued that lady, not waiting for a reply, I jest run over to tell you that I'm all packed, and Jerushy, she's all packed, and I'm goin' home, quicker'n forked light- nin', to put in father's starched shirts, and then we'll be all ready to start for New York to-morrow mornin'. You'll be waitin' for us when we come round for you in the wagon, Hetty?" "Ob. yea, Mary Jane," answered Miss Bonnet." I haven't got one thing left to 'tend to, 'cept to take Tom round to Elize Ann Merrifs; she's a-goin* to take care of him for me." "If you'd a husband and half-a-dozen young 'uns to look after," sniffed the visitor, you wouldn't make so much of that yaller est, I ain't got no time to fool with pets." Like's not," murmured Miss Hetty, meekly. The Lord dn't send all of us the same mercies, Mary Jane, and mebbe he don't mind my wtie-tin' a little time on Tom, 1 ain't got no other company." I suppose you ain't heard the news about sa.gh -Fe!pini!w" little boy bein' so sick?" inouireS^Strs? "^llsLins, pausing, with her inquiri?,il b- ifiki hand on the door. The little ore, with the brown eyes, and long, yaller curls, tha;t'ø called Sammy?"' asked Miss Bonnet anxiously. "Why, what ails the little feller?" The doctor says he's got to have an opera- tion performed on his thigh borse," explained the visitor, or elae he can't live. But, land o' Canaan! his mother's that shiftless she ain't got no money to eenxi him to the hospital in New York, let alone go with him. and Dr. Gre-gory says he'll have to go, for it cac't be done here." She ain't got no money to send him?" echoed Miss Hetty. Pors little Sammy! Pore little chap." Yes, it's too bad, ain't it?" asserted Mrs. Wilkins, carelessly. Well, good-night, Hetty, and mind you're ready." Good-night," responded Miss Hetty, and closed the door. Alone, in the little sitting-room, she sat down before the open fire. and with earnest eyes gazed into the heart of the glowing ooals. Pore little Sammy," she repeated, softly, to herself, Pore little feller." Bye-and-bye, she got up and went quickly over to an old horsehair sofa. and kneeling down before it, buried her face in her hands. Dear Lord." whisperad she, jest make me do it; it ain't much, after all. you've done for me. Jest take any idee of goin' out of my hea<d. When she arose to her feet. there v-an a light in her grey eyes that was as if the glory of the Shechmaii rested upon her. *•••• Ten minutes later a little figure, wrapped in a grey shawl, knocked, timidly, at Sarah Pearsail's kitchen door. "Why. Hetty Bonnet, is that you?" ex- claimed Sammy's mother. Come right in." "-No, I can't to-night," murmured the visitor, "it's late, but I jest run over to give you a little money, go's you can go 'long with Sammy to New York and take him, real com- fortable." Mrs. Pearsall glanced down at the roll of bills which had been laboriously gathered, a penny at a time, and hoarded for the one treat in Miss Hetty's life, and gasped, "Oh, no!" "Now, dear heart." protested Miss Bonnet, seeing the mother's tears begin to fall, "don't you feel no ways bad about it. I don't need it a bit, and I ain't denyin' myself anythin' worth speakin' of." And before Mrs. Pearsall could utter her thanks, the little figure in its grey shawl had I disappeared into the darkness, leaving the dawn of a great joy in an aching heart. But the next morning, when the wagon con- taining Mr. and Mrs. Wilkins and their daughter Jerusha stopped in ront of the little white cottage, its owner was brushing a few dried leaves off her front piazza. "My lands, Hester Bonnet, ain't yon ready?" screamed Jerusha. "I ain't gain" said the little woman, smiling and nodding her head. I—kind—o— felt as if mebbe I might graw homesick"— then blushing LLt a.n evasion which might be a, lie-" I haden't ottghter say that Mary Jane, but 'twa'n't best for me to go." Mias Hetty and Tom made a great many trips up ajid down the old-fashioned winding etaarcaae that led to her bedroom on the afternoon of that day. She unpacked every article from the little tin trunk, and re- placed them in her bureau drawer, among bags of eweet-aoented lavender. She had just completed the undoing of her labour of the day previous, when a knock at the frorf. door again announced a visitor, ..hD proved to be • toe-looking, eidernao.^ with a kindly face and a gracious manner. With his hat in hie hand, he paused at the thrMhold, and said, smilingly: j "I am a stranger to you; perhaps before I enter your honf-c I should introduce myself." l At the same time he politely handed the old lady a card, on which was engraved, Mr. John Wharton, Valerie Bros.. Importers." "You are Miss Eeeter Bonnet, I believe?*' Mies Hetty gazed at her visitor with kindly I interest. "That's my name." answered she. Eiraply; will you come in?" Ee followed her into the cheery little sitp ting-room, but lingering before the chcrry- wood wheel, regarded, in silent admiration, its glossy polish and grotesque carving. "Madam," he said, at last, I was told that you had a very handsome spinning-wheel. and might be willing to sell it. I am an agent for a large wholesale house in the East, and am purchasing, in their interests, any which are in good condition." "For mercy sake" exclaimed Miss Hetty, clasping her thin hands over her blue and white gingham apron. "It ain't possible you want to buy any such old rubbidge ae that. I've only kep it, all these years, on account of it belongin' w Grandmother Brown, but I don't set no great store by it, even thea, because I've got Father Washington, and he belonged to her, too. Father Washington'! the big clock." explained she, seeing her visitor's surprise. "We call it that because it's got a pictur' of Washington on its face." Mr. "Wharton seated himself on a high- backed chair in front of the wheel, and appeared, for several moments, to be lost in a brown study. But presently he looked up to ask: How much money would you accept for the piece of furniture, Miss Bonnet?" Miss Hetty gazed with doubtful eyes at & Questionably large roee in the faded green carpet, and sighed. I dunno," she said, timid-y, "would four dollars be askin' too much?" The old gentleman smiled. as he exclaimed: "Why! my dear lady, is it possible that you do not understand the value of your posses- sion? That wheel is worth at least forty dollars to me, but will sell for still more. The carving upon the legs is exquisite in con- ception aDd workmanship. Misij Bocnet sank down upon the old horse- hair sofa, and covered her face with her bands. Between her fingers the tears fell upon her gingham apron. But she soon dried them, and. turning a radiant- face towards her visitor, exclaimed: "Well, if the dear Lord ain't jest sendin' me to New York, after all, I'd like to know who is. Ain't it the beautifullest thing, Mr. Wharton, to think how He d use an old spinning-wheel to give a pore, lonely woman her heart's longin ?" I There was just a pulse beat of silenoe, then she added, musingiy: III jest go along with Sarah Pearsall. Like's not I could help a good bit, takin' care of Sammy." A MATHEMATICIAN'S MISTAKE.
A MATHEMATICIAN'S MISTAKE. To the many stories concerning the absent- mindedness of learned men is to be added one told of Professor Sylvester. The incidsm is thus relate4- The profeesaT was once walking down a street, absorbed in a ma,thematical reverie. Chancing to raise his eyes, he saw the shiny black surface of the back of a cab which hsd drawn up at the corner. Ah, how fortunaute! Here wag the very thing he had been wanting -3, blackboard. Taking a piece of chalk from his pocket, the professor proceeded to write down blis- formxilas. Presently the cab moved off slowly. That was strange, b=-ak, yes!—it was a swinging blackboard, and the professor marched gravely down the middle of the crowded street, happy and content over his beloved problems. Presently the caiman became aware of the fact that something was wrong, and, desce-nd- ing, t-hreatenc-d the mathematician with summary punishment. In the midst of the argument that followed a party of Professor Sylvester's friends came up, satisfied the irate oabdriver, and carried off the mathematician to a room where he was able to complete his interrupted work in pence.
WELL SUPPLIED.
WELL SUPPLIED. One day while the late Lord Bersohell was paying a visit, at the house of a friend in the North, he went for an aft, ernoon fftrcal and, happening to pass by a great lunatic asylum, the thought stru-ck him thai he would pay it a viiit. Incidentally it may be said that Herschell bore the reputation of being some- what pompous at times, lie knocked at the door, which, after a long delay, was opened by an attendant. You can't come in." he was informed. It's not visiting hours." That makes no difference. I shall inepeet this institution just the same." "Indeed, but ;yo1111 not Come, come, my good m.a.n-l'm the Lord Chanoellor" Herschell expostulated. Oh, ar, you?" replied the the functionary. Then there's no room for you. AN UNDESIRED EFFECT.
AN UNDESIRED EFFECT. The Glasgow Herald recalls that the Ayr Burghs once had a representative at St. Stephen's whose great aversion was speech- making, and. although he was by no means devoid either of capacity or of political acumen or of the a.rt of stringing sentences together, he preferred very much to get a friend to write his speeches for him. The crowd said that his manuscripts were decorated with marginal notes, such as "Here pause for applause." Here take a drink of water," antl Here sink your voioe," hut that was probably inven cion of the enemy. Any- how, V,-YLLT i" true is that the author of the hon. member's speeches one day took it into his head to write at the head of a page certain words as if they were part and paroel of the speech itaelf. and in the midst of a perfervid denunciation of the malignant Turk he suddenly electrified the audience by calling out at the pilch of his voice, Rere blow your nose and take a glass of water." The effect on the audience was electrical.
