WILD DASH IN FOG. Crowded Train Wrecked I "PASSENGERS MOWED LIKE HAY." 38 Killed; 50 injured An Exchange telegram states that 35! persons were killed and 50 injured in a i railway collision on the Baltimore rail- way three miles west of Washington last night. During the fog a local train from Frederick was in collision with an express at T-erra. Cotta. Station. DEATH-ROLL INCREASED It is estimated 38 persons were killed and 50 injured, in the collision at Terra Cotta on Bundiay evening. The ill-fated train, was a local from Frederick City, winch runa only on. Sundays IAr the convenience of week-end tourieJtg Wfcturning to Washington'. ;4 was standing in the preparing w> st art, when a train madie up of eight empty carriages ran into the rea.r. The weather was thick amd foggy at the t.ime.. It is stated tia* the engineer of the empty train. did not notice the red signal indicating that the block ahead was occupied. The wrecked train was composed of an engine, smoking-car, and two ordSmary ccachee. All the vehicles were crowded, and many passengers, being unable to find seate, were standing in. the gangways. Just behind the train was a coal truck, and into this the empty train dashed at the rate of 60 miles am. hour, literally hurling it clean through two coaches. The passengers were mowed down like hay, and of 50 odd persons in the rear coach only one escaped dearth or serious injury. Both sides of the vehicle were torn off, and both sides of the track were littered with Wreckage. When the driver of the local felt the orasl^| be opened the throttle in the hope of bein,g able to pull his train out of further danger, and the consequent jolting of the damaged carriages caused many bodies to dirop on the line, which was strewn with corpses for a dis- tance of a quarter of a mile. The people on the platform fared no better than those in the train, as only two escaped, the remainder being either killed or injured by being thrown, under the train or struck by flying wreckage. The ptaaeengers in the coan/bdnation smoking and baggage car esciaped with a severe ehaking. Aa late as midnight practically no attempt had been made to identify the dead, the railway men devoting their efforts to relieving the injured and clearing the .wreckage. When the news of the accident reached Washington a number of people went out to Terra Ootta and remained on the scene until a special train left for the edity with the (dead and injured. The latter were conveyed to different hos- pitals. Three died on the way, and another suc- cumbed in the hospital. From the appearance of the bodies it is believed that 'nearly all the victims were killed out-rigM.
