Volunteers at Salisbury.
Volunteers at Salisbury. SHAM FIGHT BETWEEN WELSH BATTALIONS. A Press representative at Salisbury wires :—The week in camp has been greatly enjoyed, and great interest is taken in the special course of musketry laid down for Volunteers this year. On Wednesday, however, the attention of the two battalions repre- senting gallant little Wales at West Down was drawn in another direction. The camp was very early astir, for the alarm was sounded eoon after four o'clock in the morning, when the troopa in a very short space of titre turned out on the parade- ground spick and epan, and in a very soldier-like manner. The field day on a small scale which was arranged for later in the morning, vas entirely con- fined to the Welshmen. Both the 1st and 3rd battalions paraded, and formed up in battle array. The third was to compose the rearguard of an imaginary badly beaten force retiring on Devizes,, while the former was presumed to be the advance guard of an invading army marching on that place. The 3rd Battalion under Colonel Evans-who. it should be said, were inferior in numbers—com- menced well, and drove the enemy on to a strongly entrenched position, where, however, they rather came to grief, and had to retire. The rearguard thus victorious, formed themselves into the attack- ing party, while the first battalion, hitherto the advancing force, were placed on the defensive. The engagement was fought with much rivalry, and some excellent strategical movements were brought off. Eventually, Colonel Evans's men were driven back with heavy loss. Colonels Lewis and Gaakell were in charge of the Third, and handled their troops with great skill. Brigadier Paton, who acted as chief referee, expressed himself as most pleased with the manner in which the whole affair bad been conducted. During an interval in the operations the singing propensities of the Cyrmy—and which are famous in the camp—came under the notice of the commanding officer. A number of troops struck up some choruses well known in Wales, which the Brigadier listened to intently. At the conclusion he was enthusiastic in bis admiration, and was evidently delighted. Glorious weather still prevails. ROW AT BULFORD CAMP. The liveliness of the troops at Bulford is becoming more and more pronounced, and a Welsh Fusilier who had run a-muck, was the means of creating another sensation oil Wednesday evening The Wesleyans have gone to considerable expense to erect a splendid building for the supply of pro- visions to the camp, and it was here the row occurred, over a dispute between the Fusilier and an attendant as to the payment of the sum of 2s. Heated arguments ensued, and eventually the irate Militaman sprang over the counter and attacked the storeman. In a moment two mirrors were shattered to atoms, chairs broken, windows wrecked, and great havoc wrought. Great excitement was caused. The picket meanwhile having been sent for, arrived on the scene with fixed bayonets, and in this manner the fusilier was secured and lodged in safety. The storekeepers were naturally thrown into great eon- sternatien over the affair, and evacuated the build- ing. The damage is estimated at JE30.
Steam-Coal for France.
Steam-Coal for France. FURTHER HEAVY SHIPMENTS. A Calais Correspondent, writing on Wednesday, says:— The port of Calais continues to receive great im- portations of English steam-coal by steamers, which succeed each other almost without interruption along the quays of the inner basin. Other Channel ports are also receiving considerable cargoes of coal. A number of steamers with English and American coal have discharged at Havre recently, and the steamer Eolo has just arrived there with five thousand tons of coal from the United States. At Calais, the following steamers with English coal, have arrived this week Cadeby, from Newcastle, th fifteen ktmdrell. tons; Kong Magnus, from Newport, with thirteen hundred tons Robert Ingham, from Newcastle, with twelve hundred tons Robert Ingram, from Newcastle, with twelve hundred tons Lady Ann, from Sunderland, with eighteen hundred tons whilst the Birch, from Sunderland, is expected in harbour to-morrow. In Calais the importation of English steam-oeal is so extensive that the large steamer Ambato, with a cargo of nearly five thousand tons of goods, which it was to have dis- embarked there to-day, was signalled off on arrival at the port, as there was no available quay accom- modation, and she proceeded to Dunkirk to discharge. The whole of this coal is sent away from Calais by special trains as soon as it is disembarked. It is stated that some of it it sent for storage at depott [ near important centres of French coast defence.
