ESSEX FARM MYSTERY. I Miss Holland's Handwriting. I Samuel Herbert Dougal, of the Moat Farm, Clavering, was again charged at Saffron Walden, on the 2nd inst., with forging a cheque purporting to be drawn by Miss Camille Holland, a lady with whom he had lived, and who is now missing. Mr. Pearce again appeared to prosecute for the Treasury. Dougal was defended by Mr. Arthur Newton. Francis Manley Ashwin, "countant of the National Provincial Bank, recalled, showed that Miss Holland had a credit balance of 6d. in September, 1901. Certain payments out of Miss Holland's account to Dougal, and paid to the BirIt- beck Bank, included sums.of £ 690; £100; £61, £550;, and E1400. Miss Holland last visited the bank in- Sept., 1898. A letter was received from Miss Hol- land in May, 1899, asking fora cheque-book. Be knew that the book was sent to Moat Farm. Some time later a cheque was-received by post for £ 25, asking that the money might be sent to Dougal. The signature was not satisfactory, and a letter was sent to Miss Holland respecting it. A reply was received from Moat Farm attributing the discrep- ancy in the writing to a, sprained hand. The bank considered this satisfactory and the money was paid. In cross-examination by Mr. Newton, Mr. Ash- win expressed the view that the signature to the cheque in respect of which the charge of forgery is preferred is actually in Miss Holland's handwriting. The witness held the same opinion in regard to various- other documents which in the course of the case had! been alleged by the prose- cution to be fraudulent. In Miss Holland's com- munications with- the bank sometimes the manager was addressed in the, first person and sometimes in the third. Dougal was again remanded,
