The son of Hopkin Thomas, a sea captain. Sir Noah Thomas was educated at Oakliam and St. John's College, Cambridge, where he took the degree of M.D. in 1753. and where his portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds is still to be seen. He was appointed Physician Extraor- dinar'y to George III. in 1763, and knighted in 1775.
