LOCAL AMUSEMENTS. I COUNTY THEATRE I T'iure will ceitainly be a large accession to the ranks of those ii-ona as the result of the" Chase Üc, Ghariie"revue shown this week at the Theatre, Litio revue is formed from over twenty cuttings from existing Chaplin films with half a dozen scenes specially produced in London, where Charlie s impel senator is Air Douglas Graham. The scenes have been in- geniously strung together and the Theatre has reverberated with laughter during the week. Though hIs identity was not disclosed, the author of the explanatory lines v, as responsible for a good deal of laughter. In the Boy tocout film iSir Robert Baden-Powell appeared. For the rest of tiie week there is the French drama "The Mystery of the Listening Forest. Patrons of the County will be able to see this picture be- fore any other audience in the country. Her Soul's Inspiration/' to be shown during the first half of next week, features graceful Ella Hall in a play which can be better described as quietly delightful than as powerful or vivid. It is quite a light-hearted drama, but one that goes widi a swing from start to finish in a series of pretty scenes. As usual with the plays in which this actress appears, there "■ re many beach and seashore scenes, and as part of the story deals with a fisliei mail's hut and the life of the, fishermen, that aspect of "Her Soul's inspiration" comes naturally enough. But we see also the feet that cannot keep still, the re- presentation of a born dancer, the adventures and all the incidents of her rise to fame—and love. The comedy drama to be presented during the second half of the week is the best example yet seen of a screen play in which the acting is everything, and staging aird effects play only a negligible part. There are live settings only- the exterior, interior, and living room of the second-hand clothes shop in Houndsditch, the outer and private offices of the moneylender in Uxford-iiltroot. "The Grit of a Jew" has been termed a comedy di-airia,. Really, however, the play is a comedy with thu pathos that invari- ably fringes upon humour "at all times. No better example of this can be found than in the poems of Hood. One has the biting satire an,d humour of a plain and homely story of Jewish lif, with the fact that the Jew is not spared when a situation eveu inimical to his own faith is discovered. The story lays down emphatically that the Jew must succeed in business—that is what he is brought into existence for. lie must get on in order to help his less fortunate brethren, and so racial patriotism obsesses the baser do- sire of wealth for its own sake only. The other point to be understood is tha.t to marry out of the faith is a sin. As enunciated by old Moses Levi it runs.. Jew to Jewess. Gentile to Gen- tile like to like," As the story unfolds itself it really becomes a struggle between human love and the necessity of geMing on in busi- ness This problem of life, by the way, is not confined to the Jew. But in The Grit of a Jew" it is this struggle that interests one the most, because old Aloses Levi, his son Ben, and "poor Lclll" all have to suffer by thia "getiting on" principle. The father points out that to marry out of the faith is a sin, but the son ;as"e;t.s "dat r i, a tit ill greater sin for the modern emancipated J, to fail in business life. On the comedy side Augustus Yorke is really a true humorist. Moses Levi, the old clothes deale-r of Houndsditch, is ever ready to beat even his dearest friend in a bargain. The two out standing characters are of course Augustus Yorke, of Potash and Perlmuttcr" fame, which faot is in itself a sufficient guarantee of the quality of the acting, and Mauora Thew's poignantly pathetic portrayal of Leah.—The open- ing episode of "Judex," the ninth serial to be screened at the County, will also be shown. THE PlOrUREDROME. The stellar attraction for the initial half of the weeic was Romance and Alystery, a live- I part play which had a good reception. "Mil- lionaire Paupers,' a Trans-Atlantic feature him, occupies the place of honour 101 the rest of the weeK. The two seriats, i'carl of the Army" and "Who's Guilty," also figure in the pro grammes of the ivf, Nex,, week, "Annaoeis Romance," featuring Pearl White, will be pro- jected during the urat half, and" Unknowll Power," a remarkable lilm in which titui, great Italian actor Giovanni Spano appears, will bo shown during the weelc-end Wllfi a number of humorous pictures, which are an appreciated feature of the Picturedrome fare.
