FOOTBALL. THE CUP TIE. I FESTINIOG T FLINT. I The above match was played at Col wyn Bar in the piesence of about 250 spectators, when the Quarry lads were beaten by 4 goats to nil. Never was a team so unlucky as that which journeyed full of hope from Festiniog that; mornicg. It was generally anticipated abroad that Flint would be victorious, but never to .'the extent v-bich they did; tln'fe of the four goals being of the softest ou record, so what really should have been a victory of one goal only for Flint, was by a series of accidents increased to fonr. Up to half time neither side had scored, and by this time, the ground which was hitherto in a very bad condition had become a perfect mire, which effectually stopped every attempt at combination. It must be said however that Flint did more pressing during the second half, and a few minutes from the restart the Flint outside right scored from a corner kick, heading the ball into the net-a really clever goal. After this Flint did a lot of attacking but owing to the suberb display of Ellia Hoghea between the sticks, the leather was kept out of the net for a long period. About ten minutes from time up a penalty kick was awarded Flint which was converted; a few minutes later the ball rolled into the net quite unexpectedly from the foot of E. Hughes (Carnarvon), one of the Festiniog halves. who endeavoured to clear, but alas, another foul in ftont of goal gave Flint their fourth point f om a free kick, two minutes before time up. To be perfectiy fair, Flint was the better team, but they did not deserve the last three goals. As they played down hill the second half, it became a dimcult task for the Festiniog defence to keep on their legs owing to the nature of the ground thus when running behind an opponent it became a dimcult matter not to foul him. and evidently Flint had letuntthis dodge to a degree, for one had only to step in trout of a Festiniog man whec on the run, and instantly the whistle would go for a foul. Having thus briefty described the game, we turn to the players; i?K he! oof the hour was E!lis Hugbes, the Festiniog custodian, the way he etved his charge form downfall on repeated occasions evoked enthus- iastic applause from the-spectators the majority of whom by the way were very partial to Festiniog. One hea'd nothing but "Play up Festiniog goal- man on all hands. He is to be w&rmly congratulated on his brilliaut display. The backs, Meition Jones, and Hugh John, played quite up to the mark, as also did the two halves, fenny and Hughes; the left half however being weak, and evidently out of practice. As to the Forwards, each man played his part well. The out side left (a. LIanberis man) undoubtedly knows his work, has plenty of dash and is a decided acquisition to the team; Evan Hughes played a vigorous game, shifting some of the Flint defence clean off their feet; Jack Jones, as nimble as ever, whilst Evan Hughes and Row- lands on the right wing at times made rings round the Flint halves. The Festiniog team is to be warmly congratulated on its. display & may better luck attend them next season.—W. D. J.
