OLAMORGANIISIItE. I SELECTION OF MR. IVIAN AT SWANSEA.—Thursday last was a great day of public rejoicing at Swansea, in honour of Mr. Vivian being elected for that borough. IIhe bells rang merrily at an early hour, which, with the .firiug of cannon, continued at intervals during the day. The shops in all the principal streets were dosed; and though the weather was unfavourable, yet this did not lessen the dense crowds usually on the same occasion. Across the streets and from the windows were hung banners trimmed with laurel; on many were handsomely inscribed Mr. Vivian's name, principles aud integrity. About e!even o'clock the trIN I, hall was crowded to excess to witness the election, where Mr. Vivian was proposed .by Lewis Weston Dillwyn, Esq., and seconded by Richard Aubrey, Lsq, after which the enthusiasm of all present seemed unbounded. At twelve o'clock ke entered the chair-an elegant sort of triumphant car. The procession then moved off through Wine-sweet, Castle -street, and High-street, escorted by the police, and a nlimhr, of constables so as to preserve very good order, eonsi- tiering the mass of people. The procession was attended by a large band of music and a host of banners. The princely liberality of Mr. Vivian upon all occasions, commands every respectful attention on the payt <+1. thy inhabitants of Swansea; we have HO time to detail, but it shall appear in our next. Wit/¡ regard to the Corn Laws, it was )us opinion, that this country should have the power of supporting its population from its own resources, more particularly in the event of War. He approved of the adjusting scale, :'s it might prevent too great ashock-the rich and poor (luglit equally to be defended. As their representative III Parliament he would do his duty. Mr. Nicholl sat down amid the most deafening cheers. On leaving the Hall, a chair was ready to receive the Hon. Member, and lie was carried round the town in the usual manner— dinners were given at the principal Inns in the town. The nomination of two knights of the shire for Gla- morgan, has been fixed for Friday, the 9th ot July, at Bridgend. The assizes for the candy of Glamorgan will commence to morrow at Cardiff, before Mr. Justice Eiskine. MEUTIIYR NEW CHURCH.—The Church Building Society has granted .t'-jOO towards building the proposed new church in this parish. Mr. Isaac Edwards, from the British Gas Works. London, has been appointed Manager to the CardIff Gas and Coke Company. The quantity of iron made, in Blaenavon Iron Foundry, on all average per week, is from 100 cwt. to 110 cwt. of best foundry iron; from 100 cwt. to 117 cwt. best forge iron and common bright, equal to the best forge—short weight; and similar quantities, fit for anv market in the world, have been made every week for the last eight months-all with cold blast. GRAND IVORITE FESTIVAL.-MERTIIYR AND DOW- LAIS DISTRICTS, CARMARTHEN UNITY.-On ,Nfonclair the 21st ult, the Lodges of Dowlais and Penydarran of the above Unity, held their second anniversary. At ten o'clock in the morning, the members of the respective Lodges met at their Lodge-rooms, in order to prepare for a procession. At eleven o'clock, the Ivor Dowlais Lodge, held at the King's Head, (being the District Lodge), made its appearance in the streets, dressed in the full costume of the Order, and the form of procession was as follows: — Secretary, bearing the rules of the Order; Large Banner, Motto, Ivor Hael; President and Vice; Two Brothers, hearing the dispensation; Past ,Officers, two and two; Two Sword Bearers; Committee, Two Stars; Banner, Ivor Guest; Members, two and two; I wo Leeks; Members, two and two. After Divine bervicc-die brethren formed themselves into a procession observing the same order, each returning to the respec- tn e Loage Rooms, where excellent dinners were prepared I IILATRE., NI:\TTI.—On Monday evening, Mr. M King took his benefit, and the good peopl of Neath shewed their sense of his abilities as all actor, by giving linn the hulest house of the season. It was a bumper, and many .went away disappointed in not being able to find room. The performânces commenced with Bulwer's interesting play of "The Lady of Lyons," in which Mr. 31. King, as as "Claude Melnotte," and Miss J. Gray, late Miss M. Tyrer, as Pauline," delighted the audience With .their excellent actipg the other characters were well sustained by the company. After the play Mr. King was loudly called for, and had the honor of appearing before the curtain. Mr. King is an actor of great merit, and from the different characters we have seen him in, we 4iugur that ere long he wilj arrive at the top of his profession, and he must have been highly delighted at this public mark of approbation. I allude to the time when our late excellent friend, Mr. Thomas, of Sully, was prevented by illness, from attend- ing. Since then, Mr. Dillwyn was so kind as to act as chairman throughout the whole of the business; and I am sure if I ask him he will readily do so again. I am anxious to obtain the consent of my brother magistrates present to my taking this step: It will be more agreeable to my feelings every way. After the proclamation against vice had been read, and the usual formalities had been gone through; the Chair- man, Lewis Weston Dillwyn, Esq., briefly addressed the Jury :—He aid he had gone through the depositions with care the cases generally were of a very trifling de- scription, and were so plain that they did not require any remarks from him. There were four prisoners charged with stealing coal—a crime lie very much feared was on the increase; he greatly regretted the repeal of the Mcr- thyr Act; as it was only by strictly enforcing the provi- sions of that act, they could hope to check the evil. He had been informed that the practice of stealing coal was so great, that children were actually trained up to it. He hoped that some steps would soon be taken, to meet the urgency of the case. Sir George T)1er, Bart. qualified, and took the oaths as a magistrate tor the county. The parish of Labeston, appellants, r. the parish of Ynysawdre. Mr. Morgan of Bridgend, moved to quash the order ot remova with costs. This was opposed by Mr. Lewis* ot Imugenu • In the course of a conversation that ensued it c,e -Llt that the parishioners had agreed on both sides, to refer the case to Mr. Bicheno, and to abide by his decision. The order was quashed, with costs, up to the time of reference. The Court then adjourned for the transaction of the County business. The Marquis of Bute very briefly addressed the meet- ing, in proposing his motion respecting the rurl police. The said, his proposition was the same as made by him at the last Quarter Sessions, with one exception—an I alteration bad been made in the Merthyr District; It was intended that 13 constables should be appointed for MT-hyr, and two for Aberdare, in lieu of 12 for Merthyr, and three for Aberdate, as proposed last Sessions. The prisoners pleaded not guilty. Elizabeth Morgan, examined by Mr. Richards—I live with Isaac Roberts, publican, of Cardiff, in this county. On the (ith of April, I saw the two prisoners at the "Patriot" about dinner time. They were calling for a pint of beer they were there ahout a quarter of an hour; they were in the kitchen. After they left the house, [ missed some articles from the kitchen-a silver spooIi, teakettle, and glasses. I had seen them that morning. The glasses were kept on a shelf in the kitchen. The teakettle was kept on another shelf. The spoon was in the tea-caddy. The tea-caddy was not missing. [Thos. Davies, constable, produced the articles.] I know one of these glasses by a mark. I lived at Isaac Roberts's six months, and have been in the habit of using it daily. It is worth twopence. This teakettle is Isaac Roberts's property. It is the teakettle I missed on that day. It is worth Ss. Cross-examined by Ifr. )reyrick--i do not know whether any other glass has a similar mark; I will swear to the itiar I missed the glass on Tuesday evening. The teakettle is marked with smoke. I have no other mark except the smoke. The prisoners were the only strangers in the house that day. 1 he street door was open. I was not in the kitchen all day. I dll not see the prisoners take I was there with them most part of the time. I was up stairs when they went out. They paid for the beer. Elizabeth Barnes examined—M, y hushand keeps :i betfr-house in Cardiff. On the 6tii of April last, I found a copper teakettle in a wash-tub in our back court. I had seen both prisoners on that day in the tap-room; they were there when I found the teakettle. The pri- soners had been at our house all day, backwards and forwards. They came together to the house, and some other persons with them. I did not see a teakettle with any of them. Morgan Hopkin asked me if I would buy a copper teakettle. I had not found the teakettle then. I said I would not buy it for the whole world. They might have access to the backward, by the backway. The front of our house is in Charlotte-street. The court adjoins Whitmore-Iane. There are two entrances to. our house—one from Charlotte-street, and the other from Whitmorc-lane, into the court. Any person entering our house from Whitmore-lane, woiild pass by the wash mh. Morgan I'lopkin also offered tor sale a silver spoon. I did not buy it. Two small glasses were offered me bv John Griffiths, for sale. I bought them. John Griffiths was not present when I had the teakettle oti'ered me. I paid sixpence for the two little glasses. I asked him where he hrollght them from; He said from Newport. I had the offer of another glasS-a rummer by John Griffiths; I did not buy it, because lie asked less than the value-threepence; it was worth a shilling. 1 gave the glasses an d teakettle to the constable, Cross-examined by Mr. Mcyrick-1 found the tea- kettle after dinner. I would not swear to the teakettle, from the smoke j neither could I swear to the glasses, with a clear conscience. This concluded the case for the prosecution. Mr Meyrick addressed the Jury, strongly contending that the evidence was not sufficient to convict the prisoners. Verdict, not guilty. J\ I organ Hopkin was again tried for stealing a tea- caddy, from the dwelling house of John Barnes. Verdict, guilty. Sentenced to four months' iiiipri-oii- ment in Swansea Houie of Correction the last week in the first month, and the last week of his imprisonment, to be passed in solitary confinement. Mr. E. P. Richards conducted the prosecution: Mr. Meyrick defended the prisoner. Jane ISeynon pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing one silk handkerchief, of the value of three shillings and sixpence, and other articles, the property of Mary Thomas, of Merthyr Tvdvil. Sentenced to one months' imprisonment in Cardiff House of Correction. Richard Florener, aged 19, labourer, charged with stealing two silk handkerchiefs, the property of Mr. George Bird, of Cardiff. Mr. Bird, examined bv Mr. Richards—I am a mercer, residing in Cardifl; ill this county. I remember the prisoner at my shop on the (ith of April, between six and seven 0 dock in tlic- evening; a female came with him. They came there to purchase a gown, and other articles. I shewed them some pijnts. and sundry articles. I shewed them some silk handkerchiefs. Before I shewed the handkerchiefs, the prisoner had purchased a gown, and paid for it. I gave the prices of ihe handkerchiefs. Prisoner said, Do you think I am a d-ll fool to give you Is. (id. for and then lie threw them at me. I stooped to pick them liP, and I think it was then he put the articles in his pocket. I cut off three handkerchiefs, and put them with the other goods purchased by the prisoner. I silispecte(I that there Were some of the articles missing from the counter. The prisoner paid me k2 (is. 7d. After he had paid me, I said to him, Now, give me hack the goods have III your possession, which you have not paid for." lie said, "Do you think I am a thief?" I then said, "Oneot you have taken some of my articles." I he prisoner denied having them. I declined searching them, i fic female said to the prisoner, Perhaps you have put something into your pocket, put your hand 1Il and feel, and then" she ran out of the shop. Before the woman left, lie had put his hand into his pocket, and pulled out two silk handkerchiefs. Thev were given to the police man. [The handkerchiefs produced by the policeman.J I did not sell him these handkerchiefs. These are tne goods I missed from the counter. 1 am positive these are my handkerchiefs. The prisoner said he did not know how they got into his pocket. [1 he depositions taken before the committing magistrate was now put in. The prisoner had stated that he did not know how the handkerchiefs came into his pocket.] Verdict, gailty. I left the barge betwceri twelve and oni- on that day. The cabin was locked. I left a loaf of bread, cheese, bacon, trowsers, jacket, and an umbrrka, in- tli cabin. They were the property of my master. Edward Jenkins. I returned at six o'clock. The lock had been taken oil' the cabin. The articles I named were aii missing. I know the prisoner; he is a boatman. I had seen him that day .-bout twelve o'clock. He was with his boat, His boat Was tied to my master's boat. Oil my return, I looked for the prisoner; but could not find him. He had left his boat. Edward Jenkins examined.-I am the employ" er of the last witness. [The articles stolen produced by the constable.] This is my jacket. I saw it two or three days before I lost it. I put it in the cabin. It is worth about eleven shillings. [The other articles were all identified.] I apprehended the prisoner. He had my jacket on his back. The trousers were on the prisoner under another pair. I found thc nmbrella in the prisoner's boat. 1 asked the prisoner why he took my jacket away ? He said nothing. I shewed him the bread and cheese, and asked him—whose is tlils! ili,isciler said, "It is yours. William Howell constable examined.—The prisoner was given into my custody. He had on the jacket and trousers, described by the last witness. The articles were given into my possession. The prisoner dedlllcu saying any thing in his defence. Verdict, guilty. Recommended to mercy, Oil account of his ignorance of his situation. Sentenced to one months' imprisonment and hard labour in Cardiff House of Correction; the last three days to be passed in soli tude. Thomas Joiits, aged 41, brass founder, pleaded guilty to the charge of having stolen live pairs of shoes and two pairs of boots, the property of Miss Grace Wescombe, of eath. Sentenced to three months' imprisonment and hard labour in Swansea House of Correction the first and last week to be passed in solitary confinement Catherine Harriyan, aged 40, and Susan Shaw, aged 20, pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing iron, the property of It. Tredwen, Esq., of Cardiff. Sentence— C. Harrigan, to three months'imprisonment; Susan S haw, two two do., both in Cardiff House of Correction. m W. WEDNESDAY. The prosecutor having failed to substantiate the charge," the Jury, by the direction of the Court, acquitted the prisoner. Elizabeth James, aged 33, alias Betsey Bengoch, was found guilty of the charge of stealing from the person of Wm. Rowlands the sum of Ss. fkl. She was also tried and convicted of stealing a watch from Wm. Griffiths. Sentence for first offence, one month's imprisonment in Swansea House of Correction for the second offence, ten years' transportation. Mr. Mcyrick conducted the prosecution. Jt,nki,i ?o?ies was tried an (F convicted of having r(?- ceived the said watch from Elizabeth James, well know- ing it to be stolen. Sentence, one month's imprisonment and hard labour in Swansea House of Correction, the last ten days to he passed in solitude. John George, aged 30, sawyer, and Tlopkia Williams, sa'vyer, were severally tried and convicted of stealing some deal boards, the property of the Swansea Coal Com- pany. I S '1. t Verdict, guilty. TUEFF.CCV COLLEGE.—It gives us great pleasure to learn that between seven and eight thousand pounds have been already collected in South Wales for the establishment of this Institution, and there are yet two counties and sixteen places in Breconshire, that have not been visited by the deputation, so that there does not remain a shadow of doubt but that the iO,OOOZ. required will be shortly:rcaliscd:in :outh ale: alone. It is satisfactory to state that thatgreat national under- taking, a fixed light-house on the Goodwin Sands, is now in progress, under_the management and patent of Mr. W. Bush, civil engineer. RIIAVADEI;.—On Sunday the 27th inst,, many of the inhabitants and numbers from several places in the neighbourhood, assembled on the banks of the Wvo adjoining the town, when the ordinance of baptism 'by immersion, was administered by Rev. W. J. Jenkins of Dolau, who prayed and addressed the attentive congre- gation, audibly and effectually. The sun of nature slume upon the assembly, and so did the Son of Highteousness. All present expressed by their deportment, success to the Kingdom of our Lord Jesus Christ.—Hereford Journal. His success in every other divi- sion of thc county has been equally encouraging.
